Hurricane Ida knocks out power in all of New Orleans | DW News

  • The entire city of New Orleans is without power following the arrival of Hurricane Ida to the US Gulf Coast. The category four storm brought powerful winds after making landfall in the state of Louisiana, damaging power lines as it moved inland. Forecasters say the storm could bring a potentially "catastrophic" tidal surge and major flooding in its wake.
16 years after Louisiana was hit with devastating Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ida brought maximum wind speeds of around 240 kilometers an hour and is one of the strongest storms to make landfall in Louisiana.
It's not just the harsh winds: As Hurricane Ida plowed into Louisiana, the storm brought torrential rain and a tidal surge to the Gulf coast.
Thousands of residents followed an evacuation order issued before Ida's arrival. Those who stayed behind have been told to shelter in place.
Ida maintained its intensity even after hitting land. Government officials said the storm would push the people of Louisiana to their limits:
The slower a hurricane moves, the more rain falls in the same place. And Ida is in no rush to continue its journey inland. With the storm moving slowly, the rain is flooding cities and the wind has cut power to hundreds of thousands of homes. But officials are ready to move in as soon as the storm weakens:
Emergency officials say it will take time before they can assess the damage, but parts of Louisiana may be "uninhabitable" for weeks, or even months.

Regarding some of the criticism I've read from other postings thank ya'll for not posting any. Most criticism was on why people live there and why we keep fixing it after Mother Nature destroys. I am watching coverage on a wildfire destroying area of lake Tahoe, everyone is evacuating. Should we not race to the rescue and fix it and help them? New Orleans is a strategic U S commercial port. It's more than Mardi gras, jazz and wonderful food.

Every newscast is focused on the "near-miss" of New Orleans, that's great and all but many communities were absolutely ravaged and they aren't getting any coverage. Many hundreds, maybe thousands of people outside of the city have lost their homes, and undoubtedly many lives have been lost by those who couldn't evacuate.

You are incorrect. They actually have more than what's listed below but it's either decommissioned or undergoing repair.
Turbine 5 - in service: This steam-powered turbine was brought back online in June after extensive repairs that followed a 2019 boiler explosion.
Turbine 6 - in service: This is the newest equipment in the S&WB's power supply arsenal. It's powered by natural gas and generates 60-hertz cycle electricity, which has to be converted to the 25-hertz variety that the S&WB's outdated infrastructure uses.
Frequency changers - all available: These devices are needed where 60-cycle power from Entergy is used to run S&WB equipment, in addition to converting Turbine 6 electricity.
Back-up generators - all five available: The generators have often become a go-to power source for the Sewerage & Water Board, which acquired them after floods in the summer of 2017 revealed gaping deficiencies in its power supply.

Ida doesn’t compare to Katrina. It’s not even worth mentioning it. It’s absurd! Hurricane Katrina was total mayhem. I was there in 125 mph sustained winds for 8 hours straight. Ida was half that with only gusts reaching over 100 mph. The 150 speeds were 4,000 ft up in the atmosphere. My potted plants didn’t even blow over in this one.

Good thing the US isn't "wasting" money on addressing climate change. That way they can use that money (plus much more) to clean up the mess from the ever increasing disasters (floods, droughts, forest fires, severe storms......) due to climate change. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Reactive people can only waste time, money and energy fighting the effects of problems (to no avail, because the problems still exist). Proactive people get to the roots of the problems, thus the problems can be solved, but only if a society full of reactive people don't constantly fight against their proactive methodology.

Our grandfather clock floated down the street....it was horrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But not everyone sees the sense in PREVENTING storm damage. Those people are poor and cannot do it themselves. It is infrastructure that needs attention and change. Drastic change. And THAT, my friend can only be dealt with by governments, state and local. Only the rich areas are leveed to withstand this level of damage. Those specific areas are exactly the ones that have gone through gentrification after Katrina. Those people were abandoned

Was in Florida in the 3 hurricane-year (Andrew, Ivan and...I don't remember, was it Kathrina?) and hardly a week afterwards somebody blamed politicians for putting up stricter building rules: It would make construction more expensive and what are insurances for?

Why is the meteorologist referring to New Orleans as the Big Easy? No one in NOLA calls it that and no one outside calls it that either.

How awfully awfully irresponsible! Should have raked the leaves instead of blaming it on climate change! Just awful.

Yes, prepare for worsts and the only solution is to repent and live a righteous and holy life. We are now in the 4th seal(Revelation 6:7-8) and over a 4th of people all over the world will die.

Please remove people to a safe studio apartment around the USA, They should have been removed
before the storm. I would have left for good, after Katrina. Money should not be an issue, if we can bring non-Americans from around the world, who end up eliminating us. I would not have been in Afghanistan etc. Learn from history, or be DOOMED to repeat it.
