    Ride along videos are always fun, but toss in a little driving lesson and it becomes something even better. Today at lunch I passed the garage and turned around in the gravel area and my first thought was, "There's evidence of heavy dune buggy action everywhere!" Great video, as always. It was great to meet you and the guys today- thanks again for your valuable time and allowing me the thrill of the visit!

    Love the car setup stuff. Diagnosing issues. That's something I almost never see discussed. I used to know more years ago, but even then there was a lot I still didn't know. And troubleshooting is something I would love to get better at. "What is wrong? And what is the likely cause or fix?"

      I mean both Assetto and Forza are simcade… real drifters play LFS… jkjk honestly any practice with a proper wheel, even if it’s Forza horizon, is a pretty good substitute for beginner seat time at a track. As a Miata track day bro, I can say the best investment I ever made wasn’t a torsen lsd or Toyo r888r’s, but actually a g920 and a decent sim setup. Another awesome life hack is going to Dirtfish or Team O’Neil or Chelsea’s School of Drift. You can have the best car setup in the world, but people often seem to forget that driver experience/seat time is often more important than having a better car/setup.

    Out in my neck of the woods, the local highway authority is experimenting with a different type of freeway exit(it works if your not an idiot). A brief description, you exit off the freeway, have a 90 degree turn, cross the freeway, traffic light, traffic crosses over to normal traffic flow. When it first opened I kept seeing kids smashed into the barriers, right after the turn. This was happening a lot, one or two not really an issue, when you get to five, six, seven, something is going on here(that was when I was driving by). Kids are trying to drift the turn, but on a highly grippy scored concrete road. I can only say the best time to do that sort of thing is when your young. :)

      Why should it end poorly? A poor result is only achieved if you a) aren’t expecting it and b) put yourself into a position where you will either damage yourself/someone else and/or nicer equipment than you are prepared to damage. Just make sure you don’t use a vehicle you’re not prepared to write off and keep speeds low until you have the skill to increase them. Besides, if you look at the wall you will hit it...expecting a negative result greatly increases the chance you will achieve one.
      Have fun, it’s what cars are all about (or should be)!!

    Hey Casey! I'm not even a small-time youtuber, just an autocrosser who shares a lot of your points of view - but I think I could help you make this video even better. I think if we really planned out every step and every shot, we could film an awesome tutorial that really gets into the juicy details of whats going on when drifting; from weight transfer to throttle and brake control, inertia and tire slip angles. And I think we could do it at Michelin's Proving grounds in the morning before an SCCA event. (Or after, maybe.)
    If that sounds interesting let me know and I'll see who I can talk to to make it happen.

  • @mrs_radrod
    @mrs_radrod 4 года назад

    Big point to remember in all of this, you are drifting a RR dunebuggy. Having owned an MR2 and now owning a BRZ, I can see that you use a lot of steering to affect little changes in angle, and to catch the rear end after you hit the throttle.
    2 reasons for this,
    1) you are hitting the gas to get the rear to step out, but it has a lot of mass behind the driver. This means more grip in the rear, and consequently you are understeering a bunch when you first initiate. However that makes a good point, because the initiation of any drift always involves some understeer. If there were no understeer in a Scandinavian flick, it wouldn't keep the rear tires trending to the outside of the turn.
    2) the mass moment of inertia of the car sits far behind the front wheels in an MR and RR car. This changes how RR and MR cars behave vs FR cars. In an RR or MR car (under normal gripping conditions) the steering does a lot more work with less effort than an FR car because the CG is much further back. The torque that the steering can apply to the front of the car relative to the engine placement is much higher than the FR cars where the steering and CG sit much closer. However this means that for a sliding scenario you have to use more steering, because the inertia of the engine in addition to the steering via the tires spinning is also changing the steering angle. So the steering has to do more work in an MR or RR car to achieve the same stability because the engine CG is much further away from the steering axis, so it requires more torque to stabilize the slide.
    TLDR: Casey understeers a lot, due to the MR/RR setup of the buggy. In an FR car it is much easier to initiate and control the slide. MR is great for track use, but when sliding you have to catch all that weight with the front tires. This makes your slides either really slow, or they have shallower angles compared to FR cars. This is why there are so many pictures of MR2's wrapped around telephone poles.
    Learn how to slide so you can use it in an emergency.

    • @Mister2_

    • @mrs_radrod

      Edgar Heff
      I had a Mk2. I could slide it around and do some simple transitions. It did take a fair bit of effort to start sliding and keep sliding if you were trying to slide. If you weren’t trying to slide it had some interesting camber curves and under braking it could start sliding if you didn’t modulate the brakes. It actually made it fun to play around with when you were trying to keep up the speed between corners.

    • @Mister2_
      @Mister2_ 4 года назад

      Christian Gotsch youre right I have that same feeling under braking
      I haven’t gotten to sliding my car around I feel like it’s a bit more tricky to keep sliding and catch than an FR car.

    Honestly. Its a good idea to mess around with any vehicle you own in a SAFE manner. Just to see how it reacts under different conditions and you can learn how to best deal with weird things. For instance. I have a 2004 buick rainier cxl v8 awd. Thing will pretty much hold grip in any situation with good tires, but one year we had an ice storm roll through and the parking lot at work was just a sheet of glass with a metric ton of things i could run into. Went to pull in, it immediately went sideways, but because Id messed around in empty fields and parking lots I knew relatively well how to correct it and straightened it out without freaking out.

    I feel like people would benefit a lot by learning how to ride a motorcycle before trying advanced stuff in cars. It seems like many of the principles are the same. For example with this video- on the bike you obviously want to be smooth on the throttle, and the last thing you want to do if the rear starts sliding is to snap the throttle off because it will grip and massively upset the bike. A lot of the clutch/throttle action is the same too, and easier to learn on the bike because coordinating them is a bit easier.

  • @BillyBoy444

    13:50 - Hey Casey have you ever had one of your cars corner weighted with the driver onboard? - I think this buggy might benefit from it and be more neutral afterwards. Or maybe try it with a passenger and see if that extra balance sorts it out. Just thinking that the driver is like about 10% extra weight in this buggy but that weight is only on one side and not balanced out.

    I have to disagree with much of what you said here. I used to do this on asphalt with my slammed 1986.5 Toyota Supra. It was an automatic with open differential. It had much lower profile tires in front (so it leaned forward) and very little weight in back because I removed the spare tire. I could crank the wheel from a stop and give it full throttle and it would oversteer and move around easily. The open differential gives you less grip so you don't need much power and the automatic torque converter is much more durable than a manual transmission.
    I think you lack experience of what a crap car is capable of. It did like to snap oversteer in the rain, so there was that. It was my first car and I had no idea what I was doing.

    probably weight-biased because you don't have a passenger. for something that light, a driver sitting down on one side makes it very left-heavy, so maybe the left tires grip harder. it's not an issue on karts since you sit at the middle and not as noticeable in cars because they're heavier
