"When his father dies, Luo Yusheng returns from the city to his childhood village where his father was the much-revered local teacher. But what begins as a short trip to bury his father becomes much more when he learns his mother wants a traditional burial for her beloved husband. She want to have him carried by foot, honoring the belief that a body returned this way will never forget the road home. As Yusheng enlists the men needed to fulfill her wishes, the story of his parents' love affair unfolds. In the days of arranged marriages, he learns their was the first based on love."

This is the most beautiful love story ever made.... a very unique film.. .there is such tenderness ,honesty and innocence, and sincerity in the story.. . it doesnt matter where in the world you are from , if you are old or young , or male or female, .every human being can relate to the feelings between the two characters ........we all wish we can someday find the same love that they share...Thank you Zhang Yi Mou ....for making this masterpiece X

This is my best movie! So innocent and pure..And the landscape reminds me of my homeland which I left so many years ago and where I was as pure and happy as this young girl.

the movie was so touching i was crying over and over, the most touching thing was how sad she was when the bowl broke, and she did everything she could to get the bowl mended and put back together, you don't see that kind of love and devotion in the modern era anymore.
Her Mother got the bowl repaired.
Yimou is a master film maker. Quite possibly a genius. I don’t care for his big budget movies but this and To Live just move me. Yes, I’m not ashamed to admit it, I weep every time I watch them.
I want to see To Live but I can’t find it anywhere. 😔

This really cemented ZZY’s acting in my heart. How could her eyes speak so much emotion? I cried watching this movie. And the music! It’s crazy how the music evoked my emotion-weirdly warm and tender, yet a sense of longing remain in the air. Should it be a happy or sad song? Or a song that gives an ambiguous feeling to the listener?
And the year after she played villain in Rush Hour2

Got to admit, I usually don't get emotional watching movies, but this one had a knot in the throat.
To hell with high budget techno crap they release nowadays and Hollywood. Being an Indian, I love the 1990s-2000s Chinese movies. I feel like I'm living with the characters. I wish the two countries were at the same level.

This is one of my very favorite movies. I bought the dvd so that I could watch it over and over!
I haven’t found a love like that but because it can be imagined, It is possible for this kind of love to exist in real life. If I never find true love I will still happy for those who are blessed with this gift of love. I will continue to dream rather than to succumb to pessimism and live a life without hope. This movie just has my heart fluttering and tears rolling on my cheek. This reminds me that life is not just about survival and getting ahead but about cultivating meaningful relationships with our fellow man. I strive have touched a life or lives versus a person who thrives at taking from others. Ultimately When you leave this earth no one really care how many possessions you amassed. All in all everyone has their one prerogative to lead the life they desired even if it’s an empty one. Did I forget to mention that this movie is a masterpiece?
Sometimes I think such pure and innocent love exists only in movies, in reality, it's always about sex..

When I first saw this movie back in 1996 I cried because it was so beautiful a love story. Now I'm an old man, and when I watch it I cry because I never new real love. It's still beautiful though, I'm sure.

I probably haven't watched this movie in 20 years, back when I was nine. All I remember from the movie is how much I loved it. Yet, when watching this trailer now, I start to cry... Either I cry easily this evening, or this movie has made an emotional impact (which would make sense, because I have never forgotten that this movie exists)
