- Today’s Chinatown, a lively hub for tourists and locals, was once notorious for secret societies, illegal activities, and violence. This stands in stark contrast to its gentrified facades and restored shophouses.
The Teochew-Hokkien Riots of 1854, involving clashes between secret societies, resulted in around 500 deaths and the destruction of 300 homes. In 1889, the British introduced the Societies Ordinance to abolish triad activity, leading to the decline of secret societies.

I chanced upon this broadcast this morning. Enjoyed it alot and will be viewing the other episodes. Totally agree with Eugene that we need to know our history to connect us with the present. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
Chinatown = Food, I most definitely agree with Eugene. This is a very good podcast; I have learned some interesting history. Love it!

I uses to walk at sago lane arnd 11pm during the circuit breaker. Always feel like something is watching me at the windows.
much depends on you really. I lived there for my 1st 28 years of my life since birth. Never thought anything supernatural. Been walking through all these little lanes even into the early hours of the night so very often given the daily pasar malam on the street. and even much later over the weekends.
My grand dad worked at the street of death as a funeral musician while my grand mum, an opera singer living on Temple street and as often as I do, visit them using the back lane at night. Frankly never felt any scary thing at all. perhaps, I never ever thought of such things despite even once being playing hide and seek and found myself at one such parlour along Upper Cross Street at night. That place was so dark and I only found out when I went behind the coffin to look at what was the candle light about. it is now part of Chinatown Point.
Over at Street of death, my grandmum once hosted funeral for a distance friend she only got to know while they came to SG. she was the only contact the folk home found on her and they contacted my granny. funeral service was at level 2 and all was too quiet and eerie, all soon forgotten once left that place. perhaps, I had no fear cause.. I didn't even realise how to be scare . Perhaps, I was too playful then, catching mouse coming out from the drain with several of my childhood friends, easing myself at the back lane as a little kids, even walking alone at night to my mum place along the foot path at the current Duxton park opposite Yangtze theatre, never fear anything despite being told not to do so and some ghost stories.
So all in all, got not much scary encounter to recall and remember.
Why did u go there so late
I know theres a video done at Kampong Glam but by any chance can we get a video on Beach Rd? Especially the shop houses? Used to work at the restaurants there and I always get eerie feelings when doing closing alone on the 2nd floor :O
Keong saik still has some brothels operating and they can be identified with lit numbers abv the door.
