It was a small field but this showed the potential of Group A, different looking cars with different engine capacities etc and yet generally competitive to each other.
I am so glad I was able to watch the Group A channel 7 era as it happened. In my opinion, the team headed by Mike Raymond delivered the best motorsport live broadcasts ever seen with 1985 - 1989 in particular being the most interesting years. I actually lost interest about 5 years into the Group 3A 5 litre era when Channel 7 lost the broadcasting rights but long before then I had also already lost interest in the 5 litre cars. Everything that had attracted me to the sport including approachable drivers with human personalities and great respect for the fans and wildly varying cars with vastly different strengths and weaknesses but almost identical overall lap times had by then disappeared.
Western Australia round in Wanneroo always had smaller fields since most low-funded privateers usually didn't make the expensive trip even with some cheap points available.

This was the first year of Channel 7's coverage of the ATCC in 1985 after the ATCC had spent a quarter of a century on the ABC from 1960-1984.
