This little hedgehog is really tired stressed and most likely very fed up and .
Especially having to live with those ticks you just ripped off her skin. She needs a big break
She's such a champ for pulling through this.

I absolutely must applaud you sir, what you are doing is a wonderful services to all hedgehogs, whom I hold very dear to my heart. I wish I lived where you do and could actively contribute to a wild population as you do, but unfortunately in the US there are only domesticated hedgehogs and so I've had to satisfy myself with rescues, I've had a number of these little guys from abusive or neglectful previous owners who should never have been near one in the first place. Currently I only have one, a little African Pygmy who was owned by a young woman with no sense of what such a creature needs. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to watch someone taking such diligent and intelligent care of these amazing animals. I wholeheartedly agree with the earlier comment that said you deserve a medal, I dare say you deserve many. Thank you so much for caring after them and for giving us a window into your care taking.

I applaud you for rescuing them it doesn’t really annoy me that people keep animals that really shouldn’t be pets as pets. Reptiles are also a good example of that. Annoys me to see reptiles in a tank even a big tank when they can travel far in the wild and the majority of pet snakes can’t even stretch out fully in their tanks

Thank you for doing such good work! In case you didn't already know, hedgehogs have scruffs like cats - so if you need to get to their belly, you can hold them by the scruff and they won't ball up. I had a hedgehog, it worked like a charm on her.

Thank you for displaying such kindness to an animal.
I know ticks are animals too but they are certainly of the parasitic kind (and the kind you wouldn't want to live with you), and live less consciously (as I believe it) than mammals or bigger animals do -- they don't even feel pain since they have no pain receptors. So they rightfully deserve less treatment than that fuzzy hedgehog.

I love hedgehogs! I have at least 35 that regularly visit my basement. So I decided to build a hedgehog paradise for all and any hedgehog that wants to come visit. I have an automatic sprayer for the flea repellent and have made sure none invade my home. I always like to pick each hedgehog up and give them a checkup (since I'm an exotic animal vet) and I do a bit of blood work. Then I fit them with a soft band and microchip them so I know if they come back lol. I always have a ready supply of tasty mealworms and other treats for them as well! I remove tics as soon as I can and make sure the cute hedgehogs are getting proper nutrition. I love my hedgies and am proud to do my part!

To catch thieves in the act to provide Police with evidence you
could try and use something like a “ trail cam “ a Camera designed for filming
wildlife that has a motion sensor so it only starts recording to a sdcard when
something moves within its field of view. Unlike CCTV that you would need to
leave recording 24 hours a day and then somehow find the time to look back
through hours of footage to find the point where something happened after it
happened. I know about “Ring” branded doorbells but they would be fixed in one spot
on your door and that may not cover the area you need to protect eg you may not
park your car right in front of your car door. Or if you have thieves coming
over your rear garden fence etc to look in sheds for example a camera on your
front door isn’t going to help.
I Bought a number of a brand called “ Bushnell” after seeing
them used on a very good BBC TV show where they were trying to film rare
animals in a jungle somewhere. The model I bought was called a “ Bushnell
119440 “ they vary in price so shop around Amazon is not the best price quite
often these days so shop around www.amazon.co.uk/Bushnell-119440-Nature-Camera-Colour/dp/B00AU6E2TO they were averaging £260 each in June 2014 on
Amazon when some shops were advertising
them for up to £340 ! , as I still use mine I can show you how to set this
model up. They can record in infrared even if its pitch black outside ( video
will look black and white when recorded at night) or in Colour that’s full HD
1080p quality in daylight. I set mine to
record for 60seconds at a time when its triggered.( you can set them to record
for shorter chunks of time if you wish) By
now late 2019 the model number has likely changed to some newer model but they
will be very similar. They run off 12 AA batterys. There is a forum about trail
cameras i used www.chasingame.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=22 where people discuss the latest models of
this product category so by all means join that to find out more.
You get a nylon material strap to
attach the camera trap to trees etc but
depending on where you intend to set it up you might want to buy a metal case
to put it in that’s lockable so thieves cant take it. camlockbox.com/ is where I bought the metal case designed to
fit the Bushnell 119440 exactly ( you will need to buy a case that fits the exact camera trap model you purchase so
that it doesn’t block any sensor etc)
buy Master lock python cable locks to secure the camera and case to a
    tree or post etc store.camlockbox.com/master-lock-camo-python-cable-8418kadcamo/
Here is a video of mine that
shows the equipment I use “ Hedgehogs & Bushnell camera trap 24oct14
Cambridge UK 938p ruclips.net/video/9Hl6SeZ6pEs/видео.html if you go to my RUclips account ruclips.net/user/AwesomeFullHDvideosvideos then click on playlists then click created
playlists then scroll down until you find the playlist called “ Bushnell Camera
traps DIY etc 29oct14” which is this
link ruclips.net/video/NPgTjRjDH68/видео.html watch those videos to see the equipment I use
and a way to hide them very well so thieves or wildlife cant see them . I also
bought another thing to put out more infrared light at night to boost the
quality of recording I was getting at night you will see it mentioned in my
    videos. They are called Uway
    xtendir and I bought them
online from Canada or USA( they use 4x D Cell batterys) they made a big difference to the quality of
records filmed when its dark and are amazing if filming wildlife that within 5
or 6 feet of the camera.
Another playlist to look at is “
Camera traps for wildlife “ which is this ruclips.net/video/mh54e175VOU/видео.html you will see the incredible quality Bushnell’s
    can film in
    Also look in
Hedgehogs 15oct14 playlist here and you will see videos I recorded using the
    camera traps ruclips.net/p/PLiVKwaUJvwmUzIF0A3J985Fl1UL4ppzKt
There are other makes and models of camera traps out there
but in general the cheaper they are the lower the quality so if your trying to
protect your car/home/garden/shed etc from thieves I would buy the better brands eg
Bushnell & if there is a spate of thefts in your area set up multiple
cameras if you can afford to. Remember to read up on the law of using CCTV on your
    property eg www.gov.uk/government/publications/domestic-cctv-using-cctv-systems-on-your-property/domestic-cctv-using-cctv-systems-on-your-property
    Hope this helps
    Dave
Ps as I said im happy to answer questions if you post them
on my RUclips videos ( post a comment on the relevant video ) I will see them most days when I look
at comments I get on all my videos and I will reply back usually within 24-48
    hours , thanks
If you think theyre going to steal your Car fit a tracking
device to the car, fairly cheap sim card based trackers are on Ebay etc .

As an aussie, I don't know hedgehogs, I do however know ticks. Those look like cattle ticks, they start out much smaller, are brown, would not be so easily seen among the spines, if left however, will soon fill up to the same size as the ones removed. We put ticks in methylated spirits to kill them, nail polish remover also works well. Do you also get paralysis ticks, I nursed our paralysed cat through that after vet treatment. Can you medicate the critters, like we do our pets? Whether flea powder or tick and flea liquid on the back of the neck, which spreads over the body, to kill off both parasites? The most recently available one lasts 3 months... Or is that kind of thing discouraged? There is a needle for cats, which prevents any flea that bites the animal from breeding. If an owner has multiple animals, one vaccinated cat will save the lot from fleas. The colonies of fleas in the area, can disappear. My father dug up a flea ball in the garden years ago, bigger than a baseball, and put them in the fire, our problem infestation under the house, went away. All the best.

I’m in nw Florida and we had a bad tick problem. I bought 12 guinea chicks and turned them loose when I had them habituated to my property. They of course went feral but return daily for feed and fresh water. They travel several blocks a day and ALL my neighbors love them! No more tick because that’s their favorite food. They are a great addition to any property and ratio is 1 bird per 1/2 acre keeps bugs off.

You are the best! Is there anything that you can use for small anaimls for flea and ticks that is safe to spray on wild hedgehogs, to keep the ticks at bay? Like Frontline? that we use in the U.S? You do good work!

Pick the skin behind the head or the back of the headhog the same way like when you pick up a cat or puppy, they will not be able to curl up easily, and while doing that take the fleas and ticks out with tweezer. If the headhog try to curl up again from time to time because you stop pick the skin on the back, then put half of the lower body into bathtub while pick the skin at the back of the headhog, the headhog will uncurl the body again.

Thanks so much for your reply, after I stumbled on your 6 year old video today - much appreciated. The magic of RUclips huh?!
PS As you're a wildlife expert, I wonder if you can advise? Over the last 4-6 weeks I'm hearing an animal running round the attic of my bungalow. It sounds too heavy-footed to be a rat. I went up yesterday to look for evidence - lots of black poo, some of which looks too big to be a rat's. Any ideas? I Live in Gloucestershire. No idea where it's getting in!
Whatever it is, I don't want to poison/kill it! I would be so grateful for any insights you can offer. Thanks in advance.

Wonderful job, you are a fellow after my own heart, one thing I must say regarding hedgehog fleas is they only live on hedgehogs and don't really affect them, they can't live on any other animal but the hedgehog and using flea removal sprays or vials can kill the hedgehog your trying to help. I have seen this happen first hand and it's most distressing when you think your helping them only to cause death to these beautiful creatures. Well done to you and long may you keep helping our spikey friends.

Holy cow! She's lucky to have someone who loves her and takes care of her or she'd be dead in no time. All of your heggies are very lucky to be neighbors in your yard. I think they are endangered? Ticks are nasty. My ex and I would check each other after hiking and he'd ALWAYS have them on him. Me, not so much, thank heaven. My dogs were targets too. It's as if the ticks could smell them and they would all come out and move fast to get on my dogs. A whole bunch at one time out of nowhere. I had to pick up my dogs and run because they were everywhere! I really like your tick removal tool too. Never have seen anything like it in the U.S. What do you do for removing a flat non engorged tick? How do you find the flat non engorged ticks between the quills and remove them from the heggies? That's impossible? Just wait and see if there are any engorged ones in a few days? I think ticks have some sort of numbing solution in their saliva, so you don't feel the bites. I'm curious about the flea spray that you have too. I give my dogs a very expensive heartworm medication that kills the fleas too. In the past I gave them medication that would kill the flea eggs, but not the fleas. Well, the fleas were were still jumping around biting my dogs AND BITING ME AND THEY WERE ALL OVER MY CARPETS, MY BEDDING, EVERYWHERE! It was THE MOST RIDICULOUS MEDICATION IN THE WORLD AND COUNTER PRODUCTIVE! I think the fleas usually didn't bother most people, but I have a HORRIBLE REACTION TO FLEA BITES AND BESIDES THAT I WANT THEM DEAD. So, I don't want them in my house, on my dogs and never on me. I think this medication takes care of ticks too. I've never seen any of them since changing to tje expensive medication. No vermin in my house or on my babies or on me ever. I am so happy that you love your little visitors so much that you invest a lot of your time and money on them. They are so precious.Ms. Madam is such a pretty lady and she DOES appreciate everything you are doing for her and her family to keep them safe and healthy. They are so special.

It has been shown that black cumin seed oil is a good remedy for protecting dogs against tick infestation. Perhaps you should look into if it is as effective if administered orally to hedgehogs (by putting some on their food). The organic, cold pressed variety is best. Just my suggestion.

Me and an ex girlfriend had to do this to each other once. We had been out the day before walking through loads of overgrown ferns out in the countryside and I noticed one on her the next morning in bed so we went over each other like a couple of chimps and found a few on each other. Her white dress that she had been wearing the day before was covered in them. They are very small until they feed where they increase by 1000%. From a hardly noticeable size to the size of a small dried pea.
