In Jamaica, vendors would sell spicy shrimp in a paper bag with the shell on. One of my favorite snacks as a child. I would eat the shell, very delicious.
Not that it matters based on the quality of this content, but Alison is beautiful and I love how her hands, manicured nails, and pretty rings accessorize the cooking experience! That’s how I like to cook too 🙌🏻
Alison oh my god i cannot believe you also eat the shell of a peanut!!!! ME TOO!!!!! Every few peanuts just pop one of the small single ones whole and eat it, the saltiness of the shell, the good good crunch, it's not too hard, its so good!! Its so silly but i used to feel like it was wrong or embarrassing to eat the shell of a peanut, but never again will i feel less than for straight shelling it!!! I like eating the shell and im proud!!!!! We stand strong!!!
My supermarket (Kroger) sells frozen, de-veined but shell on shrimp. The shell is split down the back where the vein was removed, which also makes it easier to peel as well.
Or you can split the backs down the center and remove the vein (it’s really the digestive tract and has waste in it). I once cooked shrimp without removing the veins, and it was yuck! I about gagged on it. Never did that again.
Don't believe I'll eat a shell less shrimp again! My only regret was not having enough bread to soak up the spicy sauce! As soon as I watched this video, I had to make this. Alison is so enticing.
If you truly want an edible shell, flash fry the shell-on shrimp in hot 375 oil until the shell is as crisp as a potato chip. Then toss it in the harissa sauce and serve. Cooked this way in the video, the shell could choke someone since it’s steamed, rather than deep fried.
Here in Aus we cook our prawns in the shell with the head still on, keeps all that good flavour in and you can make a bisque from the discarded heads. Also can’t believe you tore the tail instead of squeezing it, squeezing the meat from the tail gives you an extra quarter prawn!
Love the shells if they are crunchy. Often eat the tails but never the intestinal vein. Even when you cut the back of the shell to remove the vein, it will stay on.
Me too. It depends on the size of the shrimp though. You can cut down the center of the back and remove the digestive tract while leaving the shells on. Sometimes they are even sold like that.
Hey Alison! Or readers of this comment. I made shrimp on skewers and BBQ'd them this past weekend. It was a disaster, but I'm wondering how I could amend this recipe to be a marinade? Actually maybe I should give up the idea of shrimp on the barbie.
Over the years, I’ve definitely come to understand that her palette is very peppery, vinegary, briney, crunchy, herby. Which is awesome but it’s definitely not for everyone.
I’d follow the recipe as stated for the sauce, add in white wine and your clams/mussels and cover for 4-5 minutes! Finish with the lemon juice, and eat with the baguette and salad. I imagine it would be comparable flavor wise but the wine needed to steam the shellfish would obviously add a bit to it. I’m not into the texture of shrimp, so I’m thinking I’ll do this with mussels!
Putting the baguette in the oven and assembling a salad AFTER the shrimp have cooked seems absolutely insane to me. They will continue cooking and turn to rubber!
I think at least the shrimp "vein" must be cleaned first. How do you do that with the shell left on? Shrimp are scavengers -- generally not a great thing to eat.
You don't really have to clean the vein. It won't make you sick or anything, it's just typically done because people find it disconcerting. You can do it with the shell on by using some kitchen scissors to cut a slit along the shell just above the vein.
the super close ups, the constant zooming in and out and the shaky camera is making me incredibly nauseous. i understand it's supposed to be a homey nora ephron vibe but it's too much!
I have a bee on my bonnet when people feel some kinda way about frozen seafood too! I haatteee when someone says "ew I don't like their sushi I hear they freeze their fish so it isn't fresh" lmao. Like....boo ALL sushi places have their fish frozen, we are in mfkn Sacramento! You think they caught that shit in the delta?!
Unless you have no nerves in your hand peeling hot shrimp is very unpleasant. Which then means you have to wait for them to cool down, which is also a drag. Also, very messy when eating...my napkin immediately becomes a disaster area as I wipe my hands/mouth while eating. If all that is no problem for you then sure...go for it. It is delicious and that is the bottom line.
Does anyone else feel like Alison phoned it in on this one? I get that having to start over sucks, but the energy was low, and the "recipe" is nothing new. Sautee shrimp in butter, and make it spicy. Serve with bread. That's a recipe?
Not trying to yuck a yum but if your shrimp are farmed in Southeast Asia or India it was likely done so using slave labor. Please please google this if you haven't heard of it.
Most everything in the modern world is made using slave labor. And most all meat is extremely unethical. But here we are. Living in this shitty world. Just trying to enjoy dinner.
I feel like this channel has strayed away from interesting approachable recipes, and now is just over-zoomed-in money shots of food with hot takes that seem pushy above all else. Its fine to like deshelled/deveined shrimp if you prefer, and its fine to chill wine without watering it down. Alison seems like she is trying to be a food edgelord or something.
I’m so confused by your comment because Alison has ALWAYS had hot takes. She’s always been a extremely opinionated person! She literally has a podcast ABOUT her opinions. sure, the video style is different and you may not like that, but all of her recipes have still remained approachable to the normal house cook. Yes seeing my manicured nails in motion while cooking is part of the experience I love and I love to see it with Alison too.❤❤
I have all of her books and I just really adore Alison, much success and many blessings to you AR!!
I am born and raised North Carolina, eat shrimp like religion, with shell on because shrimp is so damn good in the South.
Omg you literally manifested the Skims sponsorship! Shoutout to you
Alison, this is just so fun, and colorful and joyous! Love you and your delicious recipes always!!!
GOD I LOVE A WOMAN WHO SHARES A RESET
Making this TONIGHT! Looks so good! Baguette and everything! Also, my wife chills white wine AND adds an ice cube every time!
Simple, delicious, luxurious….such an incredible quick meal!!!! I tried the arugula with salt and lemon only…chef kiss

What about the veins? Are the veins always in shell-on shrimp? Is that icky at all?

It’s not a vein, it’s 💩 and also, texture is grainy and bitter 😖
The black line on the top of a shrimp is its digestive tract - yes it’s poop. But safe to eat? Dunno about that 😅😅😅
Okay love the shells on!! Can you devein and keep shells somehow? Is deveining even ….. necessary?

I eat the shrimp shells when the shrimp is fried, as it crisps up only to melt in your mouth. But haven’t tried it when prepared like this. I shall! 🦐
In Italy we eat shrimp that way and it actually tastes better with the shell!
Here in Aus we cook our prawns in the shell with the head still on, keeps all that good flavour in and you can make a bisque from the discarded heads. Also can’t believe you tore the tail instead of squeezing it, squeezing the meat from the tail gives you an extra quarter prawn!
Arugula is the best! My cat loves it too! She knows the word when I ask her if she wants arugula she comes running!

Making this tonight!
As always Alison - you make my life more delicious. 👏
Is there a discount code for Skims? And does it apply o/side the US
I just bought Dunning in and Nothing fancy! Everything looks so beautiful and I can’t wait to make a few things this weekend!
In Hawai'i, we have garlic shrimp (shell on) and the shell gets eaten too! Shell on shrimp is the way to go.
I’m not the only one! I’ve always eaten the shrimp shells because I like the crunch!
alison roman mukbang is the only kind of mukbang i want to watch
Sponsored by SKIMS! You go girl 🎉
I thought the same!! $$$❤❤❤
Always look forward to your vids!
So funny! I’ve got 4 lbs of raw jumbo shrimp in the freezer now, waiting to be prepared about exactly as you just did. And, I do eat the shells.
Is there a reason Alison seems particular about the Meyers lemons for the arugula? I’d like to know. 🍋 🌿
Yes! To eating the shrimp shells and Yes! To also eating peanut shells😊
I made garlic lemon shrimp pasta for lunch on Sunday. Shell on. Used seedless lemons.
I’ll be making this, for sure!!
Were the shrimp devained though? This sounds great, just curious
I was hoping for more summer eats in this season 😢
Looks amazing!!
Too bad I can't get over the digestive track.
Me too. It depends on the size of the shrimp though. You can cut down the center of the back and remove the digestive tract while leaving the shells on. Sometimes they are even sold like that.
wht butter did you use?
Always always always cook shell on. So much more flavor.
What are your thoughts on deveining the shrimp???
I would have liked the video for many reasons, but the ice in the wine was everything to me.
Shell on means not deveined which means eating the shrimps crap….or no?! Convince me I’m wrong. Please
What kind of butter? Thx
Probably from a family farm in upstate from her First Bloom Cornerstore

I always buy shell on Frozen. But I like peeling shells? But I’m weird anyway
I actually would have loved watching spicy shrimp take one as a deleted scene
Over the years, I’ve definitely come to understand that her palette is very peppery, vinegary, briney, crunchy, herby. Which is awesome but it’s definitely not for everyone.
All of this looks divine!!! Sadly I'm allergic to shrimp (and all crustaceans) but totally on board if Alison does a clam or mussels recipe!

do you need to worry about the vein when cooking shrimp shell on? pardon my ignorance! 🦐
This is my question too. I never saw her devein the shrimp and I ain’t eating that!
@@andreablamire5509I’m with you.
I wonder what the first recipe was?!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS I FUCKING LOVE EATING THE SHELLS - PSA the shit out of this xxxx

Shrimp poop!! Yummy. I'd at least split the shell and scoop out the digestive tract

It’s frozen fresh on the boats
Love the shell, hate the taste of the poop vein - yes, it tastes musky and dirty. Fight me.
Okay Skims baggg😻♥️ Iktr
Brand of butter, thx
Why is the word "appetizer" outdated?

What about cleaning the poop out ?

But looks delicious
Love you Alison, but I will never eat my shrimp shells
You gotta justify that shrimp “vein” then 🥴🥴🤭
“Muck bang” 😂😂 “muhk bahng” is Korean for “eating broadcast”
