Karna and all other kings were unable to succeed the test because lord Shiva blessed Drupad that only Arjun will be able to succeed the test and win Draupadi
All these are in the same KMG and in Geeta press which earlier says Karna was going to string the bow but Draupadi stopped him by calling his caste. The books that tells rejection of Karna itself are later telling the defeats of Karna. Mahadev give king Drupad a boon that none except Arjun will pass the test.
