Hi Bob, I agree with you on the original Rony & Elsewhere... it one of Frank's album that Ican but on anytime and feel that joy and awe that I experienced the first time I heard it. It seem to pull together all of the genres of Frank that he was working in, up to that point, and lovingly given up as a celebration.
Yes, I have The Roxy Performances CD box set. I also have the Barking Pumpkin CD and the DiscReet Records pressing of Roxy And Elsewhere. I love the album in all of its various forms and formats. I even have a copy of Roxy By Proxy. There is not enough released live Zappa shows from this era. And Yes I have a copy of the Barking Pumpkin Zappa In New York double CD. I may order a copy of the triple LP, but I do have the 5 CD 40th Anniversary box set. I remember seeing Zappa on SNL Once as the musical guest, second as the host of the show. So to have a copy of Zappa In New York is essential listening. In all honesty, these box sets are an amazing deeper dive into these albums. I'm not exaggerating when I call these boxes "Life Enhancing". When you compare what you hear on the original LPs to what is heard on these two box sets, you simply become a fly on the wall to Zappa's creative process. Zappa has been called a musical genius, Now you know why. I'm debating on getting a download of the Halloween '73 shows. I'm a physical format type of guy, I don't oppose a download, it's the insane super-mega over packaging involved on this one. Addendum: Today (8/31/2021) in my local record store, I found and could not resist purchasing a copy of the 3 LP version of Zappa In New York. It was a pretty decent price for a 3 LP set. And of course it's a Frank Zappa record, so why not?
Fantastic stuff, thank you very much for all the great Zappa videos. Can you do one on Zappa's books from your collection? Wife got me THE BIG NOTE recently and I must admit I am blown away by this book. Best reference book in my collection. Amazing attention to details in this one. Highly recommended.
The 3 disc Orchestral Favorites is some worthwhile listening. And the mastering is much more robust and room filling, compared to previous editions. A very recomended package.
The thought I had about ZINY while you were talking about it was that Ian Underwood being absent from that string of concerts seems like a bit of a tragedy. I don't know the details about why we exited the band, but the band changes dramatically after his exit. Glad Ruth was there. Great album. My first introduction to Frank was titties and beer.
I remember never getting Roxy because it was always a record on the wall and too expensive - then I got it, but I never listened to it much, but once I got the movie, now I only want to watch the performance instead of listening - which is pretty weird since I normally don't care about that kind of thing... something just seems cooler watching the band with this set. But that is a helluva cool box set.
Roxy & Elsewhere is arguably the greatest thing Frank ever did. It's certainly the one album of his that I'd grab first if my house was on fire and I had to escape to that mythical desert island we all end up on when things start to sink. I'd miss the other gazillion albums of course (even Thing-Fish), but Roxy is the one album that represents all of the elements of Frank's music that I love the most. No Synclavier (love that, too), no groupie routines and no Jewish princesses. Just the best, most complex, hilariously funny, brilliantly constructed and performed progressive jazz-rock of all time, with a funky groove to die for. If the Roxy album is the holy grail, then the Roxy Performances is the kingdom of heaven. Over 8 hours of pure bliss. I probably love it more than my wife...
I downloaded the music (with a PDF of all the liner notes) for around $30US legally. I have no interest in a Halloween mask and monster gloves, so if I can avoid spending more than double the price when all I want is the music, I'll let those who have the money to spend and the room to store it buy the box set. I'm a collector, but I have my limits.
The song that I am speaking of at 6:57 is Dupree's Paradise, Not T'Mershi Duween. Sorry.
What would you recommend to a new listener of Frank Zappa. I want to buy some CDs.

Excellent video!
One thing came to mind…..I thought the Barking Pumpkin Roxy & Elsewhere CD had the original Cheepnis on it.
I consider this period 1976 an extraordinary year. 3 training courses for an end of year zappa in New York which is for me, a summit.

My Zappa In New York booklet fell apart almost at the first leaf through. Had a glue binding that didn't take.
I look forward to your review of
"200 Motels - 50th Anniversary Edition" (7:17:12, 173 tracks, 12/17/21) #120.

I'm really excited to get a copy of that book.
Been meaning to get that special version of Orchestral Favorites

1973 this series is unique to me. It's probably the only one I avoid. it's a bit like the bite of cream that is avoidable.
