- Bienenfresser sind faszinierend! Seit mehr als 20 Jahren laufen bei Jörn Weiß die Daten über Bienenfresser in Rheinland-Pfalz zusammen. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit ihn 6 Monate lang bei seiner ehrenamtlichen Tätigkeit (zum Beispiel beim Beringen der Vögel) zu begleiten. Dieses Video zeigt die Dreharbeiten mit Marco Küster, der uns zu spektakulären Aufnahmen des Brutgebietes aus der Perspektive der Bienenfresser verholfen hat. Beiden herzlichen Dank!
Bee-Eaters are fascinating! For more than 20 years Jörn Weiß has been collecting data on Bee-Eaters in Rheinland-Pfalz. I had the opportunity to accompany him in his voluntary work for 6 months (for example when ringing the birds). This video shows the shooting with Marco Küster, who helped us to get spectacular pictures of the breeding area from the perspective of the Bee-Eaters. Many thanks to both of them!

Mit der Kamera halte ich die interessante Welt der Tiere fest. Auf meinen Reisen in die Natur bin ich gerne mit meinem selbst ausgebauten Wohnanhänger "mouse" unterwegs, über den ich auch immer wieder einmal berichte. Mein Anspruch an die Videos auf meinem Kanal ist hoch, nicht zuletzt deshalb wurden viele meiner Beiträge auch für diverse Film-Festivals nominiert und prämiert.

I capture the interesting world of animals with my camera. On my trips into nature, I like to travel with my self-made trailer "mouse", which I report about again and again. My standards for the videos on my channel are high, not least because many of my productions have also been nominated and awarded for various film festivals.

Dear Rolf, Your documentation is excellent, but personally I am not a fan of invasive methods to collect data. It all happened when I studied biology at the university and then got the Phd researching in a hospital. I was feeling uncomfortable but I was not able to understand why. After many years I understood that I was suffering for certain scientific methods based on separation, while I feel an inner peace seeing Nature as a whole. Anyway, that is a problem of mine and Your filming is always top notch! ^ ^
Dear Andrea, I see it quite similar. In Germany we have a saying: "Science is a cruel mistress". I'm sure there's a lot of truth to that saying. Example: In one case about 25 years ago, a German herpetologist from a renowned German museum killed about 500 lizards in one season for the museum's biological collection. With the argument that the data would only be meaningful in the mass. That annoyed me a lot at the time. Because at the same time I would never have been allowed to import a single pair of exactly this lizard species to care for and reproduce them alive in the terrarium. I am of the opinion, that a lot of things in "scientific biology" are thought on too narrow mental paths. I report about such things not to criticize those who do it, but to give the viewer the possibility to form his own opinion about it. Because those who act, as in my film Jörn Weiß, are convinced that they are doing something very useful. I can safely say (now that I have gained a deeper insight into the bee-eaters) that the bee-eaters in Germany would be in a bad position without ringing. This is because they breed almost without exception in artificially created biotopes (gravel pits). If the operator was not under public pressure, so to speak, the brood pits would be quickly cleared away with an excavator. After all, for the operator of such a gravel pit it is associated with state restrictions when such a rare species settles.

Thank You dear Rolf for Your detailed answer. Yes, I can see the positive side too of this activity. We live in an era in which a strategy is needed to protect a natural environment, part of it, or a species. A strategy that involves people, that becomes social and creates pressure to who does not care about it, mostly because Nature is a matter out of any business.
I am dreaming a world where Man just leaves Nature as it is, lets it be, and admires it without judging. Because Nature is maybe the very only thing that Man cannot create, and the most precious asset to pass to the new generations. Thank You always dear Rolf! Have a great week!
