Greetings from Ireland Matt. I served my apprenticeship training to be a tool maker in the early 80's but when I qualified we were deep in a recession so I went into the next thing I knew best, trucking. 40 years later and I still love engineering and I'm enjoying your channel. Best wishes from the outer edge of Europe and keep the videos coming. 🇦🇺 🇮🇪
Hey there mate! Thanks for the great comment all the way from halfway across the globe! My wife and I have Irish friends camping on our property at the moment… and man… I can listen to your accent 8 days a week. Truck on my friend!
That’s great. Kurtis & his wife Karen do such a good job on that channel. My Grandma was a proud Texan. She had a sign on the door of her office at the drilling company… “Don’t mess with Texas” Pretty sure no one ever did.
Watching from Eaglehawk in Central Vic. Subbed even though I don't do much machining. It's always good to watch an expert at work so I watch some eclectic stuff.
Haha. Thanks for the kind words mate. Much appreciated. I'm having a blast doing the work, and really grateful I get to share a window to a bunch of people who share my curiousity for machining.
Just found your channel cant wait for whats coming up. I personally am not a machinist i am a welder, but I love watching the videos on it. I find it fascinating what you guys do. Is there anyway you can include the fab shop as well? Think thatd be awesome

@@halheavyduty oh cool, if you happen to land in munich airport, drop by my shop and i can show you some cool places to visit in the south on the map while having a fresh brewed coffee if you want 😊

Yes sure, anytime, my shop is 15min from munich airport, no problem if you want to come by for a visit and a talk 😎 There are so many great places in the EU to visit, that it would take several visits to see them all 😜 but to see some places in Italy, Spain, France and Germany makes for a long enough trip with many nice places, to hang out and chill or to see some amazing stuff (like the blood lake on the island of Elba, Italy or the Technical museum in Sinsheim, Germany). I actually met his wife Karen before they started the channel funnily enough. Small world hey. They’ve really nailed it with their channel. It’s great to watch.
G'day again Matt, I'm semi retired. However I still love to see what "small" shops do on a daily basis to keep industry going. Things to maybe show would be a quick shop tour so people get an idea of your capability. In my opinion don't become a slave to the vidios. Good to see the channel growing so quickly. Try not to focus on what people ask to see in a video. 3 or 4 comments on a topic doesn't really make it a channel for everyone to enjoy. Just post what You enjoy to show. You seem to have a good recipe at the moment keep it fun as you already mentioned and you will soon know what sells and what doesn't 👍
I definitely agree with you there. I’ve really only got time to focus on what we naturally do anyway. “documenting the journey” as they say… Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. Really appreciate it mate.
Good video Matt, keep doing what your doing and adjust the content along the way. I'd be interested to know what is the core of the business (mining, water, exploration) Keep up the good work. Cheers👍
Your parts may be too big but I am interested in a multiple tool (gang tool) setup. My lathe has a just over 400mm “swing”. Your tool organizer is great as is your presentation. Congratulations!
Not sure how much CAM you do vs conversational but at least for mills I like having a computer at every machine. $500 off lease refurbished desktops are great. Even if you dont run cam software, looking at drawings, drip feeding, basic CAD to check dimensions, googling stuff like mfg data. Faster than using a phone or walking to the office. Maybe weld up some brackets to mount the computer and monitor to your tool carts.
We use a lot of the Fanuc conversational - mostly because of how simple our parts are. That said, we are just starting to use the CAM software that came with the Alpha lathes. For complicated one off parts, it’s excellent. Big time saver. We are getting a laptop for each CNC to help speed up production.
Yes I'd like to know more of Fanuc 21-t controller I have a big Hardinge cobra 65 lathe I can't get it to work I'm thinking of retrofit it with centroid or Fanuc it's just so expensive
I’m no expert on retrofitting lathes, but I have a few friends who have used GSK controllers with good results. Apparently (please don’t hold me to it) it’s the affordable Chinese version of Fanuc. I personally haven’t done it or used them, but if i was going to retrofit a lathe I’d inquire about it. Much, MUCH more cost effective and a really good controller from what I have heard. If anyone else reads this and has experience, feel free to chime in.
The two we use have Oi-TD and OiTF They’re basically identical from what I can tell. We just chose Fanuc because it’s really reliable and easy to use. And most machines come with it as a standard option. We previous had Anilam & Fagor machines… and I couldn’t sell them fast enough. Big fan of FANUC. Will be posting a few simple tutorials in the future. Mostly stuff I wished I could have found online when I started.
Hello I'm interested in how to do the tapered threads male and female we have small tormach 15L lathe I us fusion 360 to draw them and just can't get them right
Hi Matt, when did you get into machining? I'm 37 Years old, have always tinkered and made my own tooling from scrap etc. always wanted to be an engineer but unfortunately had my dream snatched recently after a bad manager over promised and under delivered on a job offer and ruined an otherwise stellar career. Is it too late for me?
Bro, I didn’t actually start until I was 39. I had grown up around it, but didn’t start until I was older than you. If you’re really interested and passionate about something, you’re 10x ahead of people who are just rocking up for a job. My background had absolutely nothing to do with this profession… So short answer… go for it. Hal himself (grandad) didn’t take up machining until he was 60!
@@halheavyduty Thanks Matt, that's really encouraging. I did GNVQ Engineering in school and loved it so i'm looking around for a lathe to get me started and i will teach myself via youtube and building the Hemingwell tooling kits like the machinist hammer etc. So how did you start at 39? What made you think "You know what? I'm going to change my career". Maybe that's a whole videos worth of information, I'd love to see that content on your channel. Thanks again :)
