- Rare two pence coins from the '70s are being sold on eBay for up to £14,000 - but do YOU have any in your wallet?
A rare two pence coin has gone on sale on eBay UK for £14,000.The coin is one of a handful which has gone on sale on the website in recent weeks, with an asking price of thousands, as those lucky enough to have one of the rare coins seek to cash in.
Produced between 1971 and 1981, the coins features the words 'new pence', which was used on all of the two pennies pieces until 'two pence' was introduced in 1982.
One coin, dated from the initial release date in 1971, is currently on the site for £14,000, and is described as 'extremely rare'.
There are five similar coins up for sale on the site, including on with a 'buy it now' price of £4,958.47.One coin, featuring a slightly turned up edge, is dated 1979 and is on at £1500, while the cheapest offering is a 1980 coin for £680.
'One thing HMT were seeking views on was whether the current denominational mix of coins meets the public's needs, and from the early reaction it looks as if it does.' Produced between 1971 and 1981, the coins features the words 'new pence' instead of 'two pence', wording which was used on all of the two pennies produced in that decade. Coin expert site The Royal Mint explains that the word 'new' was incorporated into the design for 1/2p, 1p and 2p coins in 1971 to avoid confusion with the old coinage.Currently the lowest priced coin is on at £680, marketed by a seller with 100% feedback and dated 1980.

3. Heritage Auctions
Found online at Coins.Ha.com Heritage sells is the largest in terms of overall sales. They sell nearly 1 billion dollars worth of items (not just coins) each year. They are the 600lb koala in the room.

Ihave 10 new pence coin
The new pence 2 1971 are not that rare, I have quite a few of them, plus other dates. I also have a few of the new 1 pence. I have also been saving the 20 pence, I have been saving them for years, I've not checked any yet to see if the date is missing.
The 1971 1p and 2p have a combined mintage of almost 3 BILLION! They ALL have the word NEW on them, making them worth very little. Another 20p to look out for is the original design dated 2008, they are pretty scarce too!!
If they are not rare, why now the hype about them? They might be now just getting rarer and popular all of a sudden. I'm keeping most of mines which are in MS condition, don't 4:36 miss out.

Hi Mr. Jag!!! I think you just may have made me a very very happy person! I have two New Pence coins dated for 1977 and 1971. I also have a New Pence 50 coin dated 1981. And a coin with the guy with the trident on it that says one penny 1919. And a 20 pence that is a lot smaller than the others and just has a crown and flowers. I am new at this coin collecting thing so I thought I'd just ask you about all of them seeing you just showed two of the coins that I have. Is that good?

He's full of mis-information! ALL coins minted between 1971 and 1981 have the word NEW on them, and are virtually worthless. The 2p with NEW on it you need, is the 1983, which is virtually impossible to find. The 1971 2p has a mintage of more than 1.4 BILLION (1,400,000,000), and is worth less than £2 in MINT condition!

ALL the 1971 1p's and 2p's have the word NEW on them, making them virtually worthless, same with the Peter Rabbit 50p's. The only 50p's worth looking for, are the 2009 Kew Gardens, and the Jemima Puddleduck.
