- Monsanto, one of the worlds most unique villages, built in and amongst the giant boulders upon a hill top in Portugal.
We venture through it's narrow cobbled streets to discover its secrets…
Abandoned houses, boulder shops and chapels, wind all the way up to the castle at the summit.
The earliest trace of humans here was in the early stone age. In the 12th century the king conquered Monsanto and granted custody to the knights templar.
After the wars, the village was reconstructed and repopulated. The medieval castle was destroyed in the 19th century due to an explosion in the ammunition depot.
It was voted ‘The Most Portuguese Village’ in 1938 and it was awarded the silver rooster, which sits above the clock tower. The village has remained almost unchanged in the 84 years since…

Amazing place! Huge boulders were deposited by receding glaciers - they would be essentially "picked up" into the ice and rolled along until there wasn't enough ice left to hold them. Although, I don't know if that's what happened in this case. The coffins are typical Templar sarcophagi, the only monastic group to carve around the head like that. That area might be the necropolis noted on the entry sign. With all that granite, I wonder what kind of objects where made of wood, but a great find in that nail Sam!

Such an amazing place. Thank you so much for shareing. Might not be such a bad place to live now cause its so quiet, but not a good place if one has mobility issues. But not a place for me, I would miss the forests, woods, hills, mountains to view and the wildlife. Need more of nature.

Looked like a place I would have loved to explore when I was young and fit and healthier. But glad you two and Bruno could show me the amazing Boulder Village. Kind of glad Bruno left you for another dog lol. I would have worried if he went up the Castle walls with you he might jump over a wall not knowing there was a long fall on the other side. I'd be nervous living in the home that had a huge boulder hanging above the doorway every time I'd pass under it especially after a big rainfall or an earthquake. hehe

I'm afraid of earthquakes though. My little wooden cottage has been through a few quakes in its over 100 years, but there's no boulders here ready to squish us. I used walk my daughter to school and then walk back home. On the way there was a big sign that said BOULDER. I looked and looked for that boulder but could never find it. Then one morning after looking for the boulder again I noticed a side street that said Boulder Avenue, I felt so dumb 🤣 Anyway I love this amazing video it's one of your best. Thank you for letting me tag along in that beautiful town. I hope Bruno found his home and family. Please take care on your adventures. Hugs and love always. AKA jackie wheeler.
