  • A job came in for a port match an M54 to M50/M52 intake manifold, Dave searched RUclips and the internet looking for some pointers on how to get this done and didn't find much...So we have a video now on how to get it done using HeadGames burrs!
    3/4 burr - headgamesmotor...
    1/2 burr - headgamesmotor...

this is a good thing because 1 horsepower isnt much gain but over 14 hours of racing its huge

Restrictions are friction and friction is heat so definitely a must have on an endurance build

Did this same exact thing a week ago on M54B25 head with M50B25 intake manifold with a bit different approach. I cut 10mm aluminium flange on waterjet using M54 port diameter and spacing. Blended that flange to M50 manifold the same way, so intake ports are untouched in the head and only the adapter flange is port matched. Made zero max hp gains, only 3000-6000rpm torque increased 5-6Nm across the rpm range. Interestingly peak power was at 5900rpm after the adapter flange, and 6100rpm before. Had to make slight adjustments to intake cam timing to get same max hp.
Dynoed and tuned the car before the adapter flange and after port matching the flange to the manifold. 190whp with M54B30 intake cam, headers (unequal lenght), 3" single exhaust, B30 injectors and E85. My old M54B25 with same mods otherwise but stock intake manifold made 199whp and more torque everywhere. The runners are too long and big volume in the M50 manifold compared to M54 manifold. Might make some gains on 3 liter B30, but waste of time on 2.5 and 2.8 engines.

thats like 235hp crank, not much.. stock m54b28 with b30 cams and nice exhaust will make 250hp, m54b30 will do the same (stroke only changes rpm where peak tq/hp is, not how much it makes)
one of my problems with m50 intake on m54 is that you have those crankcase vent holes bellow port, you have to plug them and if they start leaking you have problem, having a turbocharged engine makes only things worse. Also n53 is much better intake than m50, more compact, more space for everything, makes power but flanges are as expensive as aluminium side mounted TB intakes (fmic pro).. m50 intakes also are going up in price (currently somewhere around 350-400€ here), have issues with boost (iav pushing out) and you will need to match m54 size of TB to M50 intake
tldr with like 100 of bmw engines i have done, it's pointless (and waste of money) to play with intakes. What they need in 1st place is big cams (270/250 at least) which shift peak hp to something like 6800-7200rpm depending on stroke.

Hi Dave, just next week they will bring me a cylinder head like that to do the same thing.
My question is what honest opinion do you have about doing that and if the intake port is already excessively large.
People go crazy with the m50 intake manifold, but I think that with the m54 it has enough air.
Greetings and thanks for your time.

This might be a dumb question. Stock to mild cam verses wild race cam with lots of duration ...etc. Do ported heads make more power difference as you go from stock smooth cam to radical cam? I'm building a Pontiac 400 and I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort to port the heads if I'm using a BP6014SP cam and I wonder how much it would gain with that cam I'm thinking about 25 hp? increase with #13 heads? I still can't decide what valves to get for it

What the heck is up with the casting of that head? Did they just press a bunch of aluminum beads together, or actually cast it? It looks like painted styrofoam. Building that way seems like you are asking for cracks, etc. with no consideration for longevity. Is this the current trend in OE manufacturing?
