  • Prosecutor Zachary Wittchow told the jury that they will hear witnesses testify that Darrell Brooks beat his ex-girlfriend during a fight before driving through the Waukesha Christmas parade. "So the evidence is going to show that the defendant must have known once things got loud and once there was more than just him and Erika Patterson on scene, the police were going to show up. So he took the coward's way out," prosecutor Wittchow said.

To be honest, if I could willingly jump on a trial as a jury member, it’d take the hit on this one. I’d love to be on that jury. I got stuck having to serve jury duty and, initially, I was bummed I got picked. But, it ended up being pretty interesting and I actually looked forward to it every day. And that was just a boring, relatively-uneventful, civil medical malpractice case. A criminal case, especially one of this magnitude AND with an absolute nutter trying to represent himself (for now), I think would be entertaining, aside from the obvious, like having the see detailed pictures of the carnage and listen to the witness recounts of that day…

The female witness is a fighter who is not intimidated by a creep like Brooks. Her eyes were filled with a challenging hatred for him, and I have to admit that I kind of liked her passive/aggressive use of the name Brooks (after saying "you" and then pretending to correct herself). She didn't have to admit that she was drinking straight vodka that early in the day; she could have said beer or wine. In fact, I didn't get the feeling that she really cares what strangers think of her. Flawed as it was, I wouldn't discount her testimony because I do believe that a good deal of what she said is what she remembers, even if the sequencing is off. Tonight, Brooks may go back to his cage with the judge's words of encouragement ringing in his ears, but he shouldn't forget that he's going to face witnesses that are nothing like the woman he cross-examined today. I believe he will crumble under what's coming, and he'll eventually demand an attorney (and he'll probably get one).
