The goal of Monastery Podcast is to seek out discussions around the intersections of mysticism and wild spaces. Season One, “Moshing Monk” asks where Merton is found in art, poetry, and the hardcore scene. The “hardcore scene” arguable was ten years past Merton’s untimely death in 1968. The seeds were already being sown. The hippies were printing “zines” and producing commentary that would both be carried on and was curiously impermanent. The “theater” of the Catonsville Nine burning draft records surely curated the opportunity for Black Flag to sing “Rise Above” and Bad Brains were charting new territories. As the 1960s produced a deeply religious and uncomfortable response to the war in the practice of self-immolation, for many Thich Quang Duc’s famous photograph was first introduced to us by Rage Against the Machine’s debut album in 1994. This and more will be discussed. It is my hope that we build a community in conversation about this and other themes.
A Sacred Rebellion with Ryan Remington
The conversation with Ryan Remington of A Sacred Rebellion was the best way to start 2025. His new book is available on Amazon, a.co/d/7iCDzNi. Ryan's honesty, raw approach to spirituality, and way of processing is refreshing. I hope you enjoy this podcast. The video version is on RUclips. You can support the work of Monastery by following on Patreon, where you can access the unedited interview for the cost of buying me a drip coffee once a month!

This is an introduction to some of the themes in the first set of episodes to be released as well as some statements about the value of "noise" as a contemplative way. Let's chat about it! I hope that this podcast truly becomes more than my voice, lends to conversations, healthy dialogue, surprises and more!
A Mo(ve)ment and Reminder

The text is from a prayer of Thomas Merton from The Asian Journals. The video is from a chapel on the grounds of a silent retreat center in south Texas; Lebh Shomea. I offer this for reflection and the needed reminder that we are One and the risks of division and 'othering' are too great to not keep close to our hearts and challenge both ourselves and our systems to greater love and mercy and j...

The Daggy Scholar title is given alongside a full scholarship to attend the International Thomas Merton Society Conference held every two years. I was asked to be one of a few Daggy scholars who would introduce themselves to the audience of authors, artists, theologians, pr...
