N54 do have MAF sensors. They have 2 MAP sensors and the maf is part of one of them.

Reliable BMW engines built after 2000 - M54, N52, and all of the newer 3, 4 and 6 cylinder B series ones (after ~2014). Skip the others. For the high performance engines, I think some of the V8s had rod bearing issues, and some of the S series are prone to problems (crank hub if over-revved/manual?), but the others solid I think I had an M54 car on 160,000 miles, it had a few issues (vacuum leaks, O2 sensors and valve cover gasket leaking), but none of them cost more than £200 to fix, and those jobs were fairly easy to do. I would not touch an N54 or N55, or the N43/N46/N45 4 cylinders' or the pre B57 Diesels. They were beta software. The new B series ones are pretty solid. I've got one in my Mini, much better than the Peugeot engines they used before.

I have been doing this for 10 years on modified subarus. Its myth... You will not blow a seal out due to the pcv system... 😂 If there is something that does happen, you just did your customer a favor on preventative maintenance of a gasket or seal that was going to fail. A modified subaru even with the proper air oil separator, on high horsepower application when ring end gap is increased the pcv can see pressure over the separator will keep up, at least 10psi. Rant over, I have been doing this every day for a decade... Built more engines from the crank up, than I can remember, in the 100's not including prebuilt blocks. Noone in their right mind that does this on a daily is going to block off the pcv system, it just helpes find all future leaks. Blowing a. Cam or crank or rear main is such a pipedream, they see 90+ psi on a cold start with thick oil. Your your brains not your ears people.
