Nah, most of the Splatoon lore is from those Japanese-exclusive artbooks and interviews. You get, like, half the lore from the game itself.

I would disagree that 2's story mode was "trash", I found it more emotional and slightly more challenging than 1's, but I think 2's main story feels like an afterthought, like Octo Expansion with its new setting and characters and greater number of levels was obviously supposed to be the main game but delayed because 2 was rushed out for the Switch's release. 3 gets it the right way round; Return of the Mammalians actually feels like it's supposed to be the main game, and Side Order feels like, well, a side order. There is this one guy who sometimes hosts custom Splatfests for 2 on his live channel, but he only goes live once every few weeks.
