Miss America 1986 -- Crowning (Part 2)
At one point, why is NO ONE hugging Susan Akin? Just a thought ... I didn't really like her until I saw how awkward she was hahahaha

Crowning. I LOVE how Gary Collins stalls for time. "In my mind, I'm thinking 'What would Bert do?'" hahahaha good footage. (His stalling is even BETTER in 1989.) p.s. if you ask me, Honey Castro should have won, but eh, what can you do?

Miss America 1986 Talent (Susan Akin, MS)
I just don’t like when they wear wedding gowns. This was a wedding gown.
She is just breathtaking and statuesque and seems very sweet and kind. I had hoped she would be the winner when they first showed all the contestants at the beginning of the whole thing.
My All time favorite Miss America. I would love to meet her in person. She seems so genuine and kind.
What song, please?
Beautiful.
❤👑
❤❤❤
Gorgeous and talented!
All white and ugly 😔
The best talent ever!!
Only in Monroe.
WE LOVE YOU, KAYE LANI RAE RAFKO!!!! I cry every time I watch her crowning!!
Gotta love that 80's video quality. These women could look like monsters and you wouldn't be able to tell, lol.
I will never forget her! My favorite Miss America of all time!
I went to school with her. She was fantastic!!
She's very beautiful and elegant; her talent was superb!
Wow! I remember her. I was so happy she won. I thought she was so pretty with her pinned back hair style and pretty clear and smooth skin. I don't remember every Ms. America but I remember her
The hair just kept getting bigger and bigger. 😂 Good for Shannon Bream. She's still beautiful.
Eh, Sunny did it better. ruclips.net/video/coVsuFLzBe8/видео.html
HIPS DON'T LIE!
🇺🇲🗽
her hula dance was so sexy but sweet!💖💖💖
I always loved this performance! Thank you for sharing.
To the person Who said her voice cracked Get the wax out of your ear
I watch this pageant Kelly Cash Cant sing Kelly Cash won because she is jonny cash nice period It was rumors around the pagent Kelly Cash won because her uncle is Jonny Cash Facts
I remember this pageant Kelly Cash She only won because she is jonny cash nice I remember her talent she cant sing I knew someone who was there he said Kelly Cash Was very cocky She thought and new she would win, oh she was not attractive all all period
I loved the Miss America pageant. I was 18 when Kaye Lani rocked her talent. A truly mesmerizing and unforgettable performance. She was my pick to win too.
RIP Phyllis George.
Most memorable MA talent performance ever! Pure joy from an era when fun was still being encouraged and appreciated.
I knew with a panel of mostly men that particular talent sinched her win!!!!
Like Suzanne Sugarbaker said, “You’ll never find a homely Miss Mississippi.”
I knew her in real life and she ended up quite sad. Addicted to pills living next to her mom in meridian and a special needs child and a filthy house.
If that's true why would you post that here? Wow!👎
Poor Miss GA, she was SOOO DISAPPOINTED. I felt bad. Thought she was a strong contender. I was also surprised that WI wasn't up there in the TOP 10. FL, VA and TX were not my first choices for TOP 10
Go out and meet your subjects 😆
In today’s cancel culture society, this would be considered “appropriating”.
When they select someone from another state, and you totally agree. Michigan got it right, and the pathway was set! Perfect choice.
@jasuzu This is the whole package when it comes to talent. She might not be the best vocalist but everything about this song was right. I think people miss that when they look at new and old talents. You can have an opera singer who is vocally perfect but has not emotion or feeling. You can have a pianist who is technically perfect but chose the wrong song and dress. From her hair, to her dress, to her gestures, to her perfectally coordinated movements, to her voice, to the song choice, it's about execution and the ability to suck you in to the whole song and never stop watching. Who cares if she has gained weight or has a "past", we are all human. What matters is she is a genuine person with a big heart for I have spent time with her. She went to Miss America to win, and every aspect of her was planned and designed perfectally, not to mention she is drop dead gorgeous. I remember being 15 and watching this and going wow. Miss Mississippi has a history of preparing their delegates well, down to their fingernail polish and earrings. So in my opinion she is the epítome of Miss America because she went there to compete and won because of her hard work, styling, coaching and preparation. You didn't go back then to make friends. You went to win. Today Miss America is a joke. But I love watching old school Miss Americas because it was a COMPETITION......and the girls "brought it" there is no doubt Susan set the bar of how to win Miss America
I can relate our girls are well groomed for Miss America
I actually enjoyed watching Gary Collins host this era of Miss America. '83 to '91
Kaye Lani lived a couple of houses up the street where I grew up in Monroe, MI. When she was a teenager she used to babysit me and my brothers when I was seven years old.
I was working backstage as a Miss America volunteer the week Kai Lani competed. She was outgoing and kind to everyone. She literally handed me her uneaten M&M’s as she went on stage to do her talent. She was so cooly confident, but in a very nice way. I was so happy when she won. Such a beautiful girl inside and out.
Class act. I watched the night she won. She was the only Brown woman in the pageant. She was then crowned by a Black woman.
A confessed racist
Confessed racist
💩 😂
Susan Akin is the granddaughter of Bernard L. Akin, a conspirator in the murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner of 1964. The Meridian Star reported Akin's response to her grandfather's involvement, "That's something that doesn't involve me. I wasn't even born and can't be involved in this. And the people who have taken it out of context thinking they can drag me down, cannot and they're not." Akin openly opposed mixed marriages with the New York Press quoting her as saying, "I feel at this time intermixing could lead to more problems."

I don't remember her saying that but, I was in Japan when she was crowned. I went to high school with her. She was always a hard worker (majorette, and drum major) What many people don't know is that one of the three civil rights workers daughter was in the band at the same time also and they were very cool, The civil rights workers daughter was later honored by the president of the United States and that was featured in Ebony magazine. Spoken to Susan a few times over the years she's still a sweetheart!
I remember this talent well! I knew it HAD to be on RUclips! Beautiful, talented lady and an awesome Miss America. Would love to meet her someday! Don't know why I was thinking about this tonight, but so glad to see it again.
One of my all time favorite Miss America's!
As soon as she was called in the top 10,I knew she had it, she really stood out from all the other ladys. She had the "it" factor.
Wasn't her dad a member of the kkk?
