    Leo Fender did get some of his ideas from Paul Bigsby who custom built a solid body electric guitar for Merl Travis, in 1948 Leo went to a show where Merl was playing the Bigsby, that is where he borrowed that guitar

    I heard the first designer of the solid body electric guitar was with Robert Johnson that night on the crossroads. His nickname is String Heeled Jack.

    I was there. Adults hated it! They thought Rock 'N Roll to be too rebellious. They thought it was a passing fancy and could not wait for it to pass. But there were too many artists with too much music in them for it to die out ... it just kept getting stronger. My very first guitar was a 1954 Stratocaster with which, I joined the crowd in December of 1963.

    Few people get it right first time out of the gate, but the telecaster, stratocaster and P-bass he designed in the early 1950's are still in widespread use today. What an accomplishment.

      @@LeviBulger That is true, but my understanding from what I read is that the early Fender amplifiers were existing published vacuum tube circuits, while his guitars were his original designs. If I am wrong about the origin of his amplifier circuits, please correct me.

      @@JohnAdams-xc5yk Rickenbacker did the frying pan electric guitar first and Bigsby did one some time after. However Tele, Strat and p-bass are around decades later and the others aren't. So I stand by my statement, Fender got is right the first time. If the others had gotten it right, they'd still be around.

    According to the shipping/receiving manager at Fender who was employed from 1958 through 1974 (I think) and who oversaw the transition to CBS for Leo, country musician Bill Carson may well have been instrumental in the contouring of the strat and possibly Fender Bass. My source told me that Carson would be given a tele and would bring it back with parts of the back and front hacked off because they dug into his ribs. I withheld the name of my source because I do not have his permission to use his name. I hope he is still alive, and though I spoke with him for about 3 hours, he had never been interviewed by anyone before that. I found a pic of him in a book about fender guitars, and I have no reason to doubt his story. He has one of the last 3 Strats made at CBS Fullerton before the employees bought the company. It had been presented to his father upon his retirement at the closing of the CBS plant. There is something special about the guitar that also verifies his story.

    Too bad he never honored his promise to give part of the company to Forrest, his general manager that guided the growth and organization of the company. Leo sold out and got millions, and Forrest just lost his job, basically broke. Freddy Tavaras, a Hawaiian genius totally revamped the amplifier designs for good voicing and reliability. Freddy was largely responsible for the Strat, not Leo. Without Forrest and Freddy, the company would have gone no-where. He was a great facilitator for others to contribute and build a great product line, but it was a huge team effort with 2 principal assistants at the top. Get your freaking facts right!!! this video is mostly mis-information.

    The idea of the rock star moving all around with his guitar or bass came from Fender. He saw that with a standing up electric guitar and bass that the players could have choreographed moves. This lead to more freedom from the musicians to move, which lead to wilder movements- Rock n Roll

      @fannimadarasz2125 8 лет назад

      ALL guitars are handmade. There is no machines that put guitars together... They of course use power-tools, and the bodies and necks of the guitars are cut out by machine i guess. I am not sure what you mean by handmade, but if you think that guitar-making today is just done all by machines on an assembly line, like cars for example, then you are wrong. Even the asian guitars are put together by hand - they are hand-fitted and adjusted. So in a sense ALL guitars are handmade.

      Leo's big breakthrough was that his guitars were much more "productionised" than the competition, that is, designed from the ground up to be made using modern production and assembly methods.That included using furniture industry style routers, pillar drills, band saws and sanders etc as well as good old fashioned craftmanship. They weren't french polished, they were spray painted using auto shop techniques. As long as there's enough human quality control in the loop you'll still get a Strat almost as good as the one I bought 50 years ago for the same price. How's that for beating inflation? If want to go the custom shop route and you've got the dough, go for it, but if you fancy a bit of customising , get a MIM, and have a dabble, and charge yourself for your time. All that hand work's expensive isn't it!

    Leo Fender was a great man . He made amps and guitars that would hold up. If it took 2 bolts to hold it together he would put four bolts. There was another man that was his partener , 50/50 , Don Randall. Their partnership started in the very early 50s. Don Randall was very versed in electronics and he was the one that named the Broadcaster, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Bassman , Showman and many others. In 1965 when Leo was not feeling well , Don at Leo Fender request was to sell Fender. After the sale Leo felt a lot better . Don Randall started Randall Inst. and Leo started Musicman. .....

    Why do store pickers demo guitars feeding back? When I sold Fender guitars I demo'd the tones, switching smooth. The wide range of styles it would sound good playing. I try to listen to what the salesman is saying but, I have to turn down when he starts shredding.
