If its not working or you cannot change the color and it just stays white, you can try two things. *1. Instead of a raster mask, just make a new blank layer and try the gradient on that.* 2. Make sure the layer you're applying the gradient to is either selected, or the layer you're applying the gradient to is on a layer above the image you want the gradient applied to.

Fantastic! thanks. It didn't work for me initially, because I was working with text+effects, but after some trial and error, I found out I first needed to make my text a Smart Object. The fade worked great after that.
