Roles of Matter - for soprano sax & effect pedals
Roles of Matter is a work for soprano saxophone and effect pedals written for Luke Kranyak.
As living entities, we take up space. We often have opportunities to be the center of attention, taking up the entire space with nothing but ourselves. Other times, we play a role in a larger operation, and that larger picture is what captures everyone’s attention rather than the individuals within the group. This work explores both scenarios, with the saxophonist acting both as a unit within a larger picture, and an individual taking up as much space as possible.

Don't listen to the negative comments. Music can take many different forms-- given the story in the description (I'm sorry for what happened to your extended family by the way) and the overall tone of the piece, it's clearly meant to be evocative and unsettling, and it excels tremendously in those regards. It takes a lot of courage to pour your heart out and make something unique, it's commendable that you were not only able to do that, but do it well, too

My best friend just performed this as part of her quartet recital and I was blown away. The soprano and baritone both moved to the back of the lecture hall towards the end and this piece becomes all the more eerie when saxes are coming at you from four different directions. Incredible piece.

I’ve never heard a piece like this or that uses contemporary techniques mixed with traditional techniques in quite this way. I typically don’t like contemporary music, but this evokes such visceral emotions of loneliness and pain and I’ve never had a piece do that to me before. Remarkable stuff! Thank you for sharing it!

Wow, this piece is so evocative and the visuals are subtle yet effective- I thought the phasing in and out of overlapping footage and the change of lighting with the tonal shift towards the end were just perfect. Also, based on the few compositions of yours that I have seen, you seem like extended technique royalty and you have really good control of the different timbres that you find. Kudos to both you and Joshua!
