    Hey Holly! I have a Loquat tree in the corner of my lower garden and I have to confess, I have never eaten them. There is just so many other things to eat! I just love my sustainable garden and am thankful for it everyday. Now that I am retired, I can give the food forest the attention that it deserves. Noticed new growth on my Blackberry bush that I had previously thought was going to die. Don't you just love Spring?Cheers!

    Very good! Two tips: If, once they flower, you push gently the plant in the middle of the little bush and add more dirt; the yield is bigger. Second tip; many people do not know you can pick peanut plants leaves and add to salad. It is nutritious and tasty.

    -4.5°c damaged a bit of my flowers in March (Autumn in Christchurch) still going to get a harvest though. This is the only fruit tree I know that flowers and fruits in Autumn/winter. Minus 4 centigrade is said to damage flowers.

    Nice harvest Holly! Im down near Bunbury way and we have had a brilliant first seasons harvest since moving into our new place. Ive left a couple of Cauliflowers and peas to seed away for next year! Our soil, like yours, is pretty rubbish and our main goal is bringing life back into it. Any tips on finding some QLD arrowroot in the local area?

    Chillis and indeterminate tomatoes so many people don’t realise are perennials. I love protecting a tomato to grow through winter… or have them just go through it on their own. It’s the cold weather that slows them down or stops them, not the plants natural life span

    Ive got 52 fruit trees/bushes among the ornamentals in my 1.5 acre garden but get alm NO fruit due to BLUDDY PARROTS!! Cockatoos are visible and noisy, but the greatest culprits are Rosellas. They weren't a problem when we moved here 12 years ago. Just became a menace about 5 years ago. Now most fruit trees arebutterly pointless😊

    • @SustainableHolly
      @SustainableHolly 9 дней назад

      Aw nooo, that's so disheartening for you. Maybe you have to think about a netted orchard in the future. Even if it secures a partial harvest 💚🌳

    • @cassieoz1702
      @cassieoz1702 9 дней назад

      @SustainableHolly they're MATURE trees (most 4-5m tall) spread over the whole 1.5 acres so really not nettable. I've tried netting individual branches and fruit but the parrots just rip the nets and bags, or bounce up and down until the fruit falls loose in the bag/net, and rots. Rosella's also just sit in the trees before the fruit is mature and 'snip' off whole fruit clusters and branch ends, and drop them on the ground. They don't even eat them. I hate parrots 🤬

    I know different States have different garden shops but do you do it online to buy your fruit trees because I need dwarf trees that can go in pots?

    • @SustainableHolly
      @SustainableHolly 9 дней назад

      I never really buy online. I also don't like dwarf citrus fruit trees. Semi dwarf citrus for pots they grow and fruit much faster than dwarf. Being in pots helps dwarf them further but at least they don't grow as slow as dwarf. I'm still experimenting with dwarf vs standard stonefruit fruit trees in pots

    bad idea to plant fruit trees against a fence, for many reasons. in fact most privacy screen ideas are misguided altogether. if you have the space, plant out trees throughout backyard, which will soften views of neighbouring buildings from many angles. a viable growing of some fruit trees/vines when a fence is not casting shade is espalier. i grew a privacy screen against a back fence and have taken it out, as it just made for a darker area of garden that also required regular pruning. gardening is an iterative process that takes a long time to learn from.

      If I had room I would! But the small grass area is a compromise with my dog and partner 😆 I have planted out the full frontyard too. so i am using what I have and it has been working well for me with regular prining and some edits for the last 10 years 🌱
