Stuck for more distance? Try this...
It's all too common to be casting quite well but with no worthwhile improvement in distances. We naturally assume that the technique needs fixing, or maybe we need a new rod and reel. Nine times out of ten, the problem is between our ears. Here's one way to get out of the rut.

Akios 656STR Kuro - The Inside Story of a Great Beach Reel
Просмотров 13 тыс.4 года назад
An in-depth look at the Akios Shuttle 656 STR Kuro casting reel. Why is it such a great reel for both fishermen and field casters? Does it need tuning and custom parts to improve the performance, or it is just fine straight out of the box? John Holden gets the screwdriver out and show you what's inside this attractive little CT beach multiplier reel.

Much as I enjoy using the Envoy Mag multiplier, I had big issues with the magnetic controller unit. So I came up with a quick fix. This won't affect all users, so you may never run into the same problem. But if you do this how-to guide may help. Disclaimer: don't blame me if the magnets fly around, and the epoxy gets everywhere!

Better Surfcasting: Switching from off-ground to pendulum
Просмотров 13 тыс.12 лет назад
Most styles of casting share a common system of generating power and speed through body rotation and arm action. Once you've mastered an off-ground method such as the Easy Cast, switching to pendulum should be no problem. (This video clip is taken from my Long Distance Casting ebook.)
Better Surfcasting: How to tie on a sinker
Просмотров 41 тыс.12 лет назад
Probably the easiest knot for tying on a sinker. Use a steel clip between the knot and the sinker loop for safety. The same knot can be used for rigs, hooks and jointing two pieces of line. It may be the only knot a sea fisherman ever needs. (This video clip is taken from my Long Distance Casting ebook.)
Better Surfcasting: Checking for suitable butt (handle) flexibility
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.12 лет назад
A quick and dirty check of rod stiffness for beginners. I'm using about 50lb of pressure. Learning to cast is generally easier if the lower half of the rod isn't too stiff. This is particularly true for pendulum casting. You may want to change to a more powerful rod later on, though it's surprising just how far some of the softer rods can throw baits.(This video clip is taken from my Long Dista...
Better Surfcasting: Get ready to cast a fixed spool (spinning) reel

Better Surfcasting: Winding up the body for extra power
Просмотров 16 тыс.12 лет назад
The secret of long, relaxed casts is to use body power, not arm power alone. Wind yourself up like a spring during the cast's set-up... then simply unwind to release all that stored power. Winding up, or body rotation, is the powerhouse of discus, hammer and other athletic throws. And it works just as well for off-ground and pendulum casting.(This video clip is taken from my Long Distance Casti...
Better Surfcasting: More power from your left hand
Просмотров 12 тыс.12 лет назад
For the right-handed caster, it is very common for the left arm to be lazy and not pull down hard enough. (Left-handed casters usually have a lazy right arm.) Correct the error by pulling down harder with the lazy arm than you push with the other. The feeling to aim for is that the lazy arm is working about twice as hard. When you get that feeling, chances are that both arms are then properly i...
Better Surfcasting: How to tie a leader knot
Просмотров 35 тыс.12 лет назад
Here's a simple, strong and reliable way to attach a 50-60lb shock leader to your main reel line. The knot is small enough to flow smoothly through the rod guides. No other surfcasting leader knot has stood the test of time so well. Why use anything more complicated? (This video clip is taken from my Long Distance Casting ebook.)

Une des meilleure, si ce n'est la meilleure vidéo explicative sur le lancer pendulaire
Just got back into fishing, after being away from it for years, and followed John's advice. I'm hitting 100+ yards most times, with the Off ground cast, and when I get the pedulum right 150+ (more practice needed). It might be old advice, but I think it's gold advice.
Thanks john
😂 bruh
Then how to keep the reel from backlashing.. that's my issue every5th cast
Thank you for sharing.i'm definitely going to try easy cast.
Thanks alot for these videos. Is it important to use such a rod with thise baitcaster reel or any other rod can do the job. My rod is 4.20 ,does it work? Thank u again.
A shorter rod would be easier to use, but you can certainly pendulum cast with 4.2m rod. The system works with baitcasters and spinning reels. Good luck!
won't work if you have a grab weight on the rig.
Yes it does.
Should have a lot more likes on the Vid. Great Advice and it Just Works.

Nice casting Mr Holgate .
Again, a well demonstrated piece of tackle Thanks for sharing John
Thank you
Lowrider guides for only braid line or monofilament line
Use leather instead
Thank you sir for a pretty well done video... However, some things seem to contradict your position... 1. you mentioned at some point the monomag will suddenly lose all braking power as you turn it down... to me that isn't "infinitely more control". that would be if I could make a wide range of tiny adjustments in strength, with a stop at the zero point. 2. your statements concerning the centrifugal brake system seem to indicate you don't truly understand how it functions: you recommend removing the 6 blocks, each of which is a brake of very tiny power When APPLIED, but which have no breaking effect when not set. that is, each plastic brake can be set in one of 2 positions. hen pushed all the way to the center, they will "click" into the off position, ie. centripetal force will not throw it outward to rub against the braking drum, in which case no braking force is applied
For your first point, I can answer it based on my own experience. The issue with monomags is when you loose it upto a point where if you loose it a little bit more, e.g. a quarter turn or even less, then you will get a massive backlash. The braking power from the magnet did not disappear, but it is not strong enough to guard your cast any more. Of course, that "critical point" depends on a lot of conditions, e.g. the lead weight, the wind condition, the power you hit the rod, etc. Regarding to 2, the idea is to minimize the weight of the spool. The entire braking block is quite massive and heavy. For people who is seeking for extreme distances, they would replace the brake block with a light weight version and they will also remove the plastic cog from the other end of the spool because not only the cog is a dead weight attached to the spool, when it is spinning at high speed, there is a lot of air resistance coming from gears on the cog as well.
Hi I used to use two stroke oil as this has a very high temperature tolerance

Love your videos! I’m quite new to casting surf rods, and your explanations are concise and easy to understand. I’m a fly fisherman from Colorado, so I understand the importance of casting mechanics, even if I’m not yet able to do it well with long rods and heavy weights. Thank you for making these videos.
Just following this method I more than doubled the length of my cast with 4 to 8 oz of lead. Are there any tips for when you are throwing considerably more than that. In the fall and winter conditions change and I end up needing to throw much bigger baits and leads. A one pound bait with a 12 to 24 oz sinker is often times the ticket. I can get about 80 yards this way but backlashing is a problem even though I can easily get more power in the cast by taking a step as I rotate. Any suggestions?
Big sinkers and baits often generate too much preload when they are laid under the rod. Try laying them out beyond the rod tip, and a little to the right (as you see it when you are setting up). This gives a smoother launch, which coupled with plenty of body turn and a step, should give lots of power and reduce backlashing. Instead of laying the rig on the beach, you can swing it out and start the cast with the rig in mid-air. This is the basis of the Hatteras cast which is designed to throw heavy baits a long way. The key step with big loads is to slow down - doesn't seem logical but it will help. Good luck!
Nice explaination

Hi John how are you this is how I cast with conventional tackle
Hi John great video that's how I started to surf fish with spinning tackle thanks close to 30 years later I am starting to work with conventional tackle thanks
I see tournament magnets available and what is called Fishing, improved braking. What is the difference, I'm assuming the size, strength of the magnets? Fishing larger, doesn't have as heavy cutoff?
Roughly speaking, the tournament magnets - which are usually monomags - offer a wider range of braking. However they can be difficult to adjust, one reason being that the magnetic effect is not linear throughout its range. So a very small adjustment may have a big effect. This is fine for field work but not so good for fishing. The factory magnet controllers fitted to standard reels work over a smaller braking range. There is often a fair amount of braking even at zero setting, which may not suit the tournament caster but is an advantage for beach fishing. Most of these units can easily be modified to reduce the brake force if necessary.
Took me years to master this without anyone guiding in person. I'm happy now that I can cast like this. Thanks for the video!
when you let off your finger free the line ?
Hi John great video thanks for your time and help I have your RUclips channel love it🐟
appreciate your tips --will help newcomers greatly
Thank you.
This method seems like it may help me, which hand is on the reel to prevent backlash
Works for me. Technique beautifully described. Thanks.
I have been practicing this cast and found I have gone considerably further than the overhead cast. I've been struggling with the overhead cast for the past 24 years, and have been very frustrated with it. This cast really is easy to do once you have the basics down it's just a case of practicing. I have yet to do this on a session at low water, whereby I normal wade out to get a bit of distance, I'll be interested to see what happens when my sinker and rig start sat in the water. John, do you have any advice for this situation, should I only do it from the beach and not in the water? Thanks so much for the advice and breakdown, I think it is excellent. Tight lines 👍🎣
You're off to a good start, Matt, but as you've discovered the Easy Cast has its limitations. It is fine if you can lay the sinker on the ground, but it doesn't work when you're wading into the surf or fishing from rocks, etc. The solution is to start the cast with the sinker and rig in mid-air, aka pendulum casting. The conventional pendulum cast swings the sinker to a mid-air position with the leader towards you (or thereabouts). The other way is to cast when the sinker is in mid-air away from you - ie on the outswing. This one is known as the Hatteras style or the aerialised South African cast. The important thing is that however you make the swing, the main part of the cast that follows is more or less identical to the Easy Cast. Lots of left hand pull. There are many RUclips videos to help you including my own pendulum videos. Start with one of the compact swings, definitely not the huge pendulum techniques. These come later, should you ever need them. Be slow, be steady, keep it simple. And all will be well.
@@fox22250 thanks very much 👍🎣
@@fox22250 hi again. I've had a go at pendulum casting today and managed to get as far as the easy cast so I'm making progress. I'm struggling with getting height with the cast. With the way cast it's off the floor, so I can angle myself better and look up 45 degrees etc, but with the swing and sudden left hand pull in struggling to look up and get as much height. Have you any advice to make a better transition from easy cast to pendulum? Is it just a case of practice practice practice etc? Thanks again for the great advice 👍🎣
@@fattmort Well, it's mostly a matter of practice, Matt. The big mistake with pendulum casting is to think that you have to be quick between the top of the pendulum swing and transition into the power arc. Logic says that the sinker will hit the floor if you're not quick. In reality, there is no need to rush. Slower is better. Make a nice confident swing, feel the sinker reach the top of the inswing, then make a smooth and quite slow transition into the main part of the cast. And while that's happening, make an effort to get your head around as early as you can. Look into the sky where you want the cast to fly. Aim fairly high and slightly to the right of the direction you want because that will give you a straight cast. Prioritise your left hand as you do with the off-ground cast. Otherwise, too much right hand/right shoulder push plus not looking up will produce a low, left cast and lots of trouble. It's still early days and you have a good way to go before it all comes together. When the pendulum goes wrong, go back to ground casting for a while to remind yourself of the key steps. Just be patient and confident.
@@fox22250 hi again John. I've been practicing the pendulum cast here in Blackpool. Thanks for the advice regarding timing, as I managed 10 very successful casts whilst waded out in the surf at low yesterday and was very pleased with myself. I've moved on with my set up as well, opting for a clipped down rig, 4 Oz sinker, 20-80 lb tapered shock leader, 18lb main line on my fixed Spool. Definitely think the logic you laid out in the video and the comments had allowed me to grasp the steps to getting the movement. Thank you very much for all your help it's made me very happy on my fishing journey 🎣👍
I fish from a shore which is covered with boulders I swing twice and then cast Works just great

Hallo what kind off rod is the best to use what is the best lengh for the rod for 4to 8 onz .what reals is the bets and ticknes of the line i can use thanks
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
Lay back ground cast ?
More or less the same thing. Difference is whether the layout puts the sinker inside or outside the rod tip.
Is either sinker position better than the other ?
@@paulbosetti4871 Easy Cast's inside layout makes the rod work more efficiently, but an extended layout and wide turn of the body works very well too, as in the South African cast. All considered, though, the Easy Cast does better for most people and suits more beaches. Extended layouts need a lot of clean ground or the sinker won't lift off smoothly. Best bet is to try both ways.
What rod do you suggest?
It works well with most rods except those with very thin and flexible tips such as match fishing rods. These may break if the preload is too high. For surfcasting, 12-13ft is a good choice. The important step whatever the rod is to start slow, then gradually build up the power.
This 3 old videos, which year is it, 1980s?, this were of the best I could have found up to now on youtube. Very simple but lot information in them. I am not from Britain, I am from Croatia instead. There are no such long and shallow beaches here. It is different type of coast. There is basically no thing such 'SURF' here so long distance casting is not of such importance neither it is famous or popular. Most fishing is done inside 40 or 50 yards. However, I am kind of fishing zealot and I began learning and practing casting (on my own) year and half ago and now I am able to reach 100 to 120 yards distance. I can perform easy cast, OTG and pendulum as well as continental style overhead cast(which is called 'CARP cast'), although I still need improvements. This 3 videos I discovered a year ago and they were very helpfull to me. So, thanks John.... Also, I must say I am curious. As non-British, I am not able to recognize accents. Are you maybe English, Wellsh, Scottish, Cornish?..... I guess this beach is somewhere on British coast or maybe Irish? Also, maybe you would know the answer: where are Neill Mackellow and Teddy Karoll from? Because I was waching their videos a lot as much as yours and I am really curious...... Neil must have been Irish. At least it sounds that way by his name.... All in all, sorry for annoying you with this comment and thanks one more time for sharing this videos..... I almost forgot, just one more question: I have none experience with multiplier reels. I notice in this video that handle of your reel is on right side. Does right handed person use multiplier reel with handle on right side or maybe it is because you are left handed?
Thank you for the kind comments, Ivan. I am English, as were Terry Carroll and Neil Mackellow. I live in the county of Essex, and the videos were filmed on the East Coast near Clacton-on-Sea. Terry lived in Sussex until he set up the Zziplex rod company in Kent. Neil was from the South-east of England.... Sussex I think. It is such a shame that both of them died quite recently.
Hi John..........just wanted to say thanks for uploading all of your casting videos.........I have been UK shore fishing for about 5 years now (Essex, Kent and Sussex) and in recent times I have chosen to improve my casting technique (I've always been quite knowledgeable with sea fishing but my casting was an area that has held me back I think).....after seeing a couple of your demos of the easy cast on here about a year or so ago I started trying it out........and I have gradually got better and better with it.......its definitely been a clear improvement compared to my over the head casting producing larger fish and of different species......and I'm sure it will get even better with more practice. My dad actually bought two of your books years back (one was called 'Shorefishing'.......published by Faber paperbacks in 1979...........the other was a Collins book 'Encyclopedia of Fishing' published in 1977 of which you wrote the 'Shore Angling' section)..............to this day they are both brilliant books (I've always gone back to them for a read since going through my dads book heap, as a kid in the 1990's)......some of the tactics have inevitably been adjusted these days what with changes in rod designs and tackle but the books still contain a wealth of knowledge..........and are something of a relic of a golden age what with all the pics of Leslie Moncrieff and the like.......anyway mate just wanted to say thanks for all your knowledge and contributions you've made to sea angling......you're a true legend in the sport.
Meanwhile most of the fish are schooled up beneath your feet on the structure you're standing on 🤣 Just kidding, that's seriously impressive.
