Good episode, in a sense it enlighten me how the MBA impacted Philippine basketball despite shortlived. Hindi man nagtagal, pero sa kuwento ni coach John Cardel the MBA helped him and many then-PBA players (or "discards", as once described by James Ty III) na muling makapaglaro at magkaroon ng mapagkakakitaan. It's just sad some people have their own respective agendas that compromised or ruined MBA's promising start.

Now it makes sense why the likes of Dindo Pumaren, Ronnie Magsanoc, Gerry Esplana, and Boybits Victoria are effective low post players as PBA point guards. Coach Ato had a position-less lineup scheme for the Red Cubs, and these players apparently had figured out and became part of their skill set in the pros. Thank you AEOB for introducing coach Ato Badolato to me, personally. I don't remember reading or encountering his name during my Weekly Scoreboard years.

Dwight Lago became a journeyman role player and at one point became a trading piece that involved Jeff Cariaso to Mobiline (1997 offseason) then midway to 1997 Governor's Cup, to Kenneth Duremdes to Alaska (from Pop Cola). Looking back, I admire his calming demeanor when he said "no player is dispensable" after the Duremdes trade, despite knowing the swap brought back Alaska to grand slam level (if not for the Centennial team commitment, the Milkmen should done it again in 1998).

Great episode. My biggest takeaway is how Alex Compton was acquired by the MBA. The published story was the MBA had a rule allowing full-blood foreign players to play (bawal import sa MBA) provided they were born in the Philippine sovereign. Or simply put, "the Alex Compton rule." Ayun pala, humingi ng tulong ang isang MBA official to Coach E that led to discover Compton. And to be fair to Alex Compton, he immediately studied Filipino language at magaling na syang magsalita just few weeks into the MBA's maiden season.

I remember tuloy he made a game-winning shot over Ato Agustin no less, completing Sta. Lucia's comeback win over SMB. And iirc, that's the first-ever game (Araneta Coliseum) of the Realtors in the PBA (1993 season). Speaking of 1993 season, this is also the first year the PBA held its games sa Cuneta Astrodome at Araneta Coliseum. (Now wondering why it took until 1999 para makabalik sa ULTRA, now renamed PhiSports Arena.)

May punto naman si Atoy Co about Jawo about being "average" skills-wise. Nataon lamang na malakas ang charisma ni Jawo sa madla at sa mga players na dumaan sa kanya. And for that lack of skill (aminin man ni Jawo o hindi) is compensated by the said immense charisma (that arguably blinds many fans and probably even observers), fearlessness, and that oft-illogical never say die mentality. As for Mr. Co, while he admitted he lost his passion that led to his retirement, may chance pa rin syang makapaglaro nang maayos until the early 1990s if he only lowered his pride. Having a troubled relationship with Great Taste management doesn't mean ganun na rin sa ibang team. Siya na mismo ang nagsabing he had that chance to play with eventual grand slam SMB in 1989. But then, kudos to him for quitting for good with respect to the game that made him an all-time great.

One of the biggest questions that I have as a PBA fan/follower ay sa biglaang semplang ng Sunkist in 1995. After a failed grandslam bid that year, observers are expecting Sunkist to revive their dominant ways in 1996, considering their star-studded lineup. Alas, dormant na sila since 1996 until Vergel Meneses was traded to Ginebra midseason of 1999. Sir Vergel was mum pa rin when AEOB guested him. Glad sir Yoyoy brought up the "rumored" rift between Vergel and coach Derrick Pumaren, dahil "subtle" or read-between-the-lines pa yung sagot ni Vergel. Matipid magpaliwanag si Yoyoy. May mga maling details (like he and Nelson Asaytono were teammates in 1998; sabi niya hindi na) pero most of the conversation makes sense especially yung early years na hindi ko naabutan.

The Dean. Quinito Henson. I've been reading Sports Weekly Magazine since 1980 and his NBA articles in the magazines and his commentary in PBA Vintage TV. Quinito is also a gracious customer at Duty Free Philippines where i worked, He always sends us invitation to watched PBA games at the Big Dome in the late 90's. Great episode!
