Snow Village Studio

One day a little boy was looking at one of my public displays and asked, "How did they do it?" I began villaging when I was 14 in the 1990s. Back then, I didn't have access to village information or anywhere to seek advice. I figured things out, failed and succeeded, tried this and that. Porcelain, resin, ceramic, Lemax, D56, Hawthorne, styrofoam scraps in your hair, - I've been there. Just like you.

Making the Sanderson Sisters' House from Hocus Pocus - Timelapse

For years I have wanted the Sanderson House from #hocuspocus in the #halloweenvillage display. I even asked D56 to make it! So when #hallmark came out with the three sisters in ornaments, I had to get creative and make the house myself! Musical accompaniment by Dusty B. Based on renderings of the Hocus Pocus Sanderson Sisters Cottage 3d printed model by miniaverse on Etsy, I freehand scaled it ...

Hänsel & Gretel - Halloween Village Display 2023

It's horrible to take candy from a baby, but, it's even more horrific to tempt children with sweet treats all in an effort to bake them. What a tale from the Brothers Grimm! And what a #witch! Deception is often overlooked at #halloween time, where everything is overly transparent and bulging out at the seams. Perhaps that's why #hanselandgretel is such a dark tale, full of temptation and seduc...

Mystery, romance, gloom - look no further than the gothic novel Rebecca, in which Daphne du Maurier spins a tale of the present haunted by the past. Though we are left wondering if it is purely psychological or beyond our reasoning.

What kind of Glue stick is that?
I use two types of glues when papercrafting: stick for bonding flat, overlapping sheets together and liquid for angles, like joints, corners, eaves, etc. I test out different brands on various projects, and my absolute favorite stick, shown in the video, is Zig Memory System 2-way Glue Stick (broad or chissel). My favorite liquid is Tombow Mono (aqua clear or multi white). Permanent bond when wet. Whatever you use, make sure it's acid free!
Great job! (I'm Ray Keim, the designer of this model kit )
I have looked through your videos (I am subscribed) looking for the "tips and tricks" about making your moldable plaster of paris but I haven't seen anything. Can you enlighten me on the recipe and instructions?
Are any figures scaled for the castle available?
The closest I’ve found are Jada Toys Harry Potter Nano METALFIGS Die-Cast Figures. Great detailing and coloring! (car and bus not scaled to figures)
Thank you VERY much@@SnowVillageStudio
Thanks for the video! I like how thorough you were, the castle look amazing. Do the lights still work? Did you ever find out how to replace them? I'm wondering if the bottom can be taken off somehow but it looks pretty on there, doesn't it...?
Lights still work! I hooked up to a motion sensor and timer for max efficiency. When I pull the set outta storage this spring, let’s find out! 🤓
OCEAN MAN
you mention your decorative plaster recipe. What is your recipe?
It's 1/3 toilet paper, 1/3 water, and 1/3 Plaster of Paris. It reads weird I know, but that's it! I've got a plaster series coming in 2024 - stay tuned! I'll show you just how to make it work!
Is the spinning tree at :40 from Department 56? It is adorable! I love your video so much and have admired it many times. :)
Thanks for asking! It is from Dreamwizor, 2021 Christmas Collection. It's a resin music box that spins mechanically while playing O Christmas Tree. I won it in a gift exchange! You can hear a snippet in the Bloopers 2022 video ruclips.net/video/AC3vGOBYcwY/видео.html.
Hello! I love this piece! (And I happen to be named Rebecca)... what is the piece's name/what company?
How awesomely coincidental! It is Sheffield Manor from Department 56 Dickens Village series. SKU: 56.58493, released 2001, retired 2002. I chose it because it has medieval and gothic undertones, much like I imagine Manderley to have had. Caution: this piece is out there, but, I noticed a lot of them are being sold damaged (and not for cheap). Mine is missing the drawbridge ☹️ in the video, as it broke during shipment. If you find one, may want to request additional padding/wrapping on the drawbridge. I hope this piece brings you much joy, Rebecca!
dies that have glass or plastic sheeting surrounding it? I would like to learn how to make one of those. I have the buildings.
Good eye and good question! Yes, there is a piece of acrylic surrounding the tree. Have to enclose it in a public space. Sounds like a future video idea - I can totally show you how!
@@SnowVillageStudio That sounds good. By the way, I like the music.
Does anyone know how many houses total are in the set?
Check the description for a complete list! There are 10 to date (updating beyond what's in current video).
@@SnowVillageStudio Wait, 10 now? They only sent me 8?!?! The last one I got was Isabelle's house. What are the last 2?
Next up is Christmas Present and then cemetery w/ Christmas Future!
@@SnowVillageStudio I read your description and saw that! Thank you!
Thanks for this
Fantastic dioramas ,enjoyed the video.
I need a thick snow blanket that is not very fluffy do you have any recommendations?
Good question! Perhaps Home Accents Holiday Decorative Snow Fluff, 297421 from Home Depot. It’s a dense, thick blanket that is not as fluffy, laying flat, as others when rolled out. It also has layers, so you can remove some thickness with it falling apart on ya. Note it’s narrow and long - 4.5-5’x1 1/3’ - good for table or mantle runner with rough/natural edging.
Yeah, most people don't have a diecutter.
True, that was totally a personal choice that required me to import, resize, and adjust using my old but trusty Silhouette software and cutter. Took some time! Before I went that route, I was about to print that page on clear transparency paper sheets to avoid cutting out those white spaces.
@@SnowVillageStudio I totally appreciate your work, it's just that 3D and diecutting are taking away from the "hands on" to me. "Man, I really need that one little figurine." Oh look a box of figurines, I can make one. Today: Oh yeah, I'll dl a file and print it give me an hour.
Where did you get your background drop?
Gold shimmer fabric (organza) behind a halloween lace tablecloth (witch flying over rooftops). Hanging with command strips. All from Walmart. If u look closely, u can see an upside down witch lol!
Where can a person find this set? Who makes it?
Disney Mickey Mouse's Christmas Carol Village Collection. The maker is Hawthorne Village by Bradford Exchange. It’s a subscription, so you’ll sign up and receive pieces through the mail when they are released. Still available as of today!
@@SnowVillageStudio thanks. Not a fan of that subscription method. I wish I could buy the whole set at once.
good job
My gosh it's so tiny!!! I thought it would be a regular dollhouse scale like I've seen with furnished interiors. Although I haven't yet seen the motel part bathroom done. Wow that widow's walk railing was so intricate, one bad cut...
Is there anyone recommended for outdoor use?
I haven't found a good recommendation for outdoors as of yet for either blanket, filler, or finish. Most fake snow products are polyester. Outdoors present challenges, like weather, (wind/rain/snow), dirt, animals, etc. My best recommendation is foregoing polyester village-made products and shift to plastic creatives. A great blanket would be bubble wrap wrapped with plastic/vinyl tablecloth. For a filler or finisher, flat large snowflakes. Be sure to tie or weigh down to keep it in place. Good thing about plastic is that they can be washed or reused/tossed after use. Hope this helps!
Wow, you have really expanded your collection! It looks amazing, very impressive.
Beautiful display and collection! 🎄
Excellent explaination
Thanks for sharing! Thinking of getting this village. Does anyone know what the building is that Donald is standing in front of in the video?
Donald is Fred, Scrooge’s nephew. The house shown is Fred’s house. I’ll update my description with the listings, in order of receipt. Glad you asked!
@@SnowVillageStudio Thanks!
this was helpful thank you
I just got my 7th house: Mole and Water Rat's Charitable Organization
How exciting! 😍 I’ve been eagerly awaiting #7! Thanks for sharing!
@@SnowVillageStudio I had to call them today and they told me #8 is Isabelle's house (Daisy).
Oh my goodness, what a good lineup this turning out to be! I can’t wait!
Guess what I got in the mail today!? Mole and Water Rat are adorable!
@@SnowVillageStudio I had to call Bradford Exchange yesterday because the sign on the front said Mole & Water Ra instead of Rat. They're sending me a new one lol
The sets don't match, that's a shame. Thank you for your review I won't be wasting my money on this set
Very nice!!
I like the Lemax boxes better than the Dept 56 Sleeves
You only needed to put a little straw to make it look more beautiful.
That's a really good idea to add that stable realism!
Loved it in person, love it on video!
Hi I wanted to do a snow blanket outside on my porch for display, is there a brand that can go outdoors?
What an excellent question! Traditional snow blankets are meant for the indoors. Those polyester fiber blankets are going to absorb all the dust, dirt, debris, and water that will inevitably come across it. It’ll be hard to keep it clean and mold-free (if it encounters rain or snow). I’ve set up a village on a traditional snow base in a semi-outdoor setting, and every inch of exposed snow fluff turned filthy. I don't recommend it. When going outside, I’m thinking outside the box! I would stick with something non-fibrous, easy to clean off if needed (maybe with a water hose), and something cheap to toss. My idea - lay down bubble wrap to get some optional fluff going (flat side up) in the size and shape you are trying to achieve. Then cover it with white disposable plastic/vinyl tablecloths, the ones from the party section (there are different thicknesses and prices - affordable option below). Depending on what your snow base is going on top of, secure the sides and folds from the wind and weigh it down. Maybe wrap ends around something heavy or spike it down into dirt or use command strips. Or knot it. Weigh it down by laying down some white painted or tablecloth wrapped rocks/bricks/something heavy. And then top it all off with your display! Tablecloth: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L7KY5BC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B08L7KY5BC&linkCode=as2&tag=snowvillagest-20&linkId=6bba27fc3c283b4e94cf8d3282e5c9bc Fabric-esque tablecloth: If plastic is not an option for you, Buffalo Snow Artificial Snow Cover Blanket would be my choice. It's not as fibrous as others and affordable for one-time use. Please let me know how this works! I wish you the best of luck in your outdoor display!
Hahaha love this tip. You are hilarious, well done
You know I’ve been looking, looking, looking doe a !ay Pole! Thank you, Melissa. D56, where are you??
I know, right?! The good thing about DIY-ing this is that you can add whatever ribbon colors you want. So versatile! In the video the colors are super Bavarian, but they can be switched out in seconds.
A lovely display. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
More wonderful ideas. Thank you!
Thanks! And more on the way!
Hi,
Excellent and inspiring! Loved the quotes.
I love how each and every one is different, yet inspirational. Tough picking out!

Thanks! It took years and years. Happy to share!
Cute

Fantastic! The Alpine Village displays at the Giddings Public Library get better every year. Loved the music and couldn't stop tapping my foot and clapping along while watching. A must see for the Christmas season!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Heike! The music really adds to the experience! There were so many good songs from which to choose!
Thank you for making this video I am starting my very first Christmas Village this year I've always wanted to do one and if I had the chance however money is kind of limited so I'm using a very inexpensive set. I need to find a spot in my house to set it up that will be perfect for this year.
I'm so glad to hear about your village plans! This hobby is so accommodating to any budget and space. I can't think of a better way to end 2020 with than your first village! Enjoy every moment!
I sure wish I had this when making glass angels and propping with every towel I could find.
I just had this sent out to Printivity in San Diego to have it blown up on 12x20 card stock. Building a bigger version :)
That is totally AWESOME! And may I add, a brilliant idea!
Good afternoon, Snow Village Studio. this is a surprisingly insightful video. thanks. :)
