Honma Hideaki
July 29 - August 27, 2022
Honma Hideaki’s uncle, the pioneering bamboo artist Honma Kazuaki, had no children, so he adopted Hideaki (who loved to draw and work with his hands) as his son, student, and heir to the family's bamboo business. The family business was booming at the time, so Honma did not go through a traditional apprenticeship but was immediately put to work harvesting bamboo and preparing material for older employees. Honma now considers himself fortunate not to have undergone formal training before he started creating works of his own because it freed him from the traditional thinking process ...

ARTIST STATEMENT: Throughout my career, I have made different styles of bamboo art. The color black takes precedence in some of my works. The color black doesn’t have a strong identity of its own. It therefore has the effect of bringing out the colors surrounding it. This result is called an after image. Earlier in my career, when my works were selected in the Dento Kogei exhibition for the fir...

While abundant, the shadows cast by bamboo art are anything but unremarkable. This winter, we celebrate the spectacular shadows that are often an integral part of Japanese bamboo artworks. Sometimes subtle, often dramatic, the works featured in this online exhibition cast shadows almost as beautiful as the works themselves. Many Japanese bamboo artists use a number of the same tools, while many invent and use tools of their own creation. Bamboo artists are worried that the craftsmen and women who make their tools are aging and that the next generation will be uninterested in pursuing the craft.
