How does a diesel engine run on gas. In this video I break down the procedure to run the diesel engine in my 1942 International dozer on gasoline. International incorporated a diesel engine to start on gasoline to get the engine started and allowed to warm up and get some rpms in the engine before switching over to diesel fuel.
Custom Leaf Blower

Custom Leaf Blower. I wanted to make leaf clean up easier so I mounted my push type leaf blower to the rear of my Allis Chalmers garden tractor. I built a custom carrier that bolts to the leaf blower and fastens to the tractor with hitch pins. It works great and saves lots of time while also making it easier than pushing it around.

I thought I also heard something about the tanks themselves being retrofitted with a safety mechanism that shuts off or restricts the flow if it exceeds a certain threshold. So yeah, always open the valves slowly now.
Hi. Are you still checking messages? I need help with a simple question regarding the magneto. Thanks
Yep
Excellent video and thank you for sharing!!!!
How’d you match the colour of the freezer box that was chipped so well! Impressive!
I painted it along with the fridge. Thanks for checking it out
Also, smaller (20lb and below) propane tanks begin to stop boiling between 10 to 15 degrees.
Buddy you are a natural in front of that camera. No “uhm” 20 times. This was a very helpful video. 👍👍
Thanks for watching
You dont need a choke when running on Propane.
Actually you do. Tried it many times. Thanks for watching
@@PleasantValleyOutdoors do you know what a choke does? It adds more gasoline because on the cold intake the gasoline condenses and doesnt reach the engine for a proper combustion. Propane doesnt condense so you dont need a choke.
Thanks for detailed explanation, this will help many people. This is a common issue with newer propane regulators, it’s a built in safety feature in order to restrict the propane flow in case the hose bursts or develops a big leak, It’s not limited to champion or any other brand of generator, but you’re right, it should be mentioned in the owners manual.
Thanks for watching
Great tip. Thanks from Sc
...i forgot something in the last comment. Your LP tank might have moisture in it as well.
There's two things going on: one, there is moisture in the regulater. Two, letting LP out fast will freeze the diaphragm. Here is the kicker. Moisture moves around, so it might freeze the up, or it may not. It depends on where the moisture is. And it could melt or stay frozen, depending on how much moisture, how cold it is outside, etc... This can make you go crazy because the generator can have many different outcomes. I have the same generator, and it's never done this or anything else. I've had it for 4 years. All I can say is I keep the regulater inside and in a sealed zip lock bag. So maybe it never has a chance to build up moisture ? When I was in the AirForce, I worked on presure valves integrated with liquid oxygen or liquid nitrogen, and we always have moisture issues
Great info. Thanks for watching
well, I did a cheaper version of a walk behind blower, took my Stihl hand held blower and tied it down on my dolly, now just pushing and pulling dolly accross the yard. Works like charm.
Good thinking. Thanks for watching
I was told the choke is not necessary when running on propane.
I was told that too. Mine won’t start without it. Thanks for watching
I have that very generator. I live in Florida and I bought it for a back up power source in case we lose power from a hurricane. I only have about 20 hours on it basically so I can do the initial oil change and test how many things I can power. I’ll remember to open the propane valve slowly. Thanks for the information!
Ours is plumbed to a large tank in the yard. Runs for 7 seconds and then dies. Starts fine and then runs 7 seconds over and over again.
Sounds like it’s not getting enough fuel.
@@PleasantValleyOutdoors the genhead isn't working and a sensor shuts the engine down. Champion guided me through a process of disconnecting two different wires one at a time and once the second wire was disconnected the engine ran fine. Now I've got to do several tests with a multimeter and look at the bushings to find the problem in the genhead or alternator. Thanks for your response !
@@PleasantValleyOutdoors and it was a lady that assisted me steo by step. Best customer service ever.
My champion generator shuts itself off after a few minutes if I am running on economy but without load, is that normal ?
No not normal. Sounds like it’s not getting enough fuel.
Another thing I've found in the last 4 years. Propane is not as clean as it used to be. It's now oily. If you use propane 24/7 like we do for our home range and on-demand water heater the regulators go about two years before they gum up. The last time I replaced my regulator I installed in-line brass filters between the tank and the regulator.
That’s something I didn’t know although on my Mr Buddy heater I installed a filter bc they recommend it. I really didn’t know why. Thanks for the info and for watching
You would think it would kick out when it’s in an abusive environment!!!
Now is this just on champion generators ? Or all propane generators?
Probably all propane devices. It’s a problem with the propane tanks and regulators. Thanks for watching
Sounds like the slug valve...
All the time you were describing the Generator running issue I thought back to a video I watched a couple of days ago by JOHNNY'S WEEKENDS. the video is called Propane Generator Fails You Keep Making! He describes opening the propane valve slowly. Something I do and maybe its a mistake but I open the valve slowly but never open it all the way. maybe about 1/2 to 3/4
Thanks for watching
I was told that it is a safety valve in the tank. If for any reason the gas should rush out the valve will snap closed. Turn off the tank, disconnect the hose from the tank. Reinsert the hose and slowly open the valve.
Thank you sir for the video it’s great information. I haven’t have that problem……yet….lol But it sounds perfectly logical. I have a 4KW dual fuel predator from HarborFreight with probably only about 40 hours on it. I only run non-ethanol gasoline in it and use Stabil fuel stabilizer. I do not use propane that often but thanks again for the video. These are kind of videos that makes it worse watching RUclips.
Thanks for commenting and for watching
Most propane regulators have a safety built in where the regulator will restrict the flow if it sees too much flow from opening the valve too quick. It's incase the line has a leak or breaks.
I have a 7000 watt dual fuel Champion for power outages. I learned long ago to open any new style propane tank slow. There is a safety in the valve that stops the flow if you open them to fast. My generator has never had a problem I only use it maybe 2 times a year. One time the power was out for 3 days. My regulator looks just like the one on my large grill.
I learned the same from the Weber BBQ people a few years ago. Only difference is that they said there’s a safety build into the propane tank that sense a fast flow. If you start by opening the valve fast it thinks there’s a leak and turns down the flow at the tank. Once I started opening the tank slowly I never hand another issue. It will reset but it takes a while.
You are correct. Thanks for checking it out
The other thing that can happen when you quickly open the valve is the safety shutoff in the qcc1 or the valve on the propane tank will trip. Closing the valve and releasing the line pressure resets the safety valve. I can see the sudden inrush pushing the diaphram of the regulator to an extreme and not allowing it to move properly.
Thanks for watching
This happens on gas regulators in the high dollar semiconductor machines as well. Sudden pressure will pop the internal parts and you have to remove and replace with new regulator.
Thanks for the info and for watching
Hello thanks for the info, I have a pulsar 12000 watt generator, 1st time I ran it was on a partially full tank from my grill, ran flawlessly, the storm put us out og power for 10 days, I bought a 100lb propane cylinder hooked it up ran like crap, many tries later I bought an adjustable regulator from Amazon ended up turning it to what looks like off and thr generator ran beautifully, turns out the generator regulator runs on 7" water column pressure, a 7" water column pressure equal 1/28 of 1 bar, too much pressure and it won't run, thanks again
Glad you got it figured out and for watching
I had basically the same issue with my gas grill. One time it ran fine, next only 1 burner would light with very low flame. I just figured my tank was just about dead. Swapped tanks every thing was fine . Then ran across a video explaining those values. I believe its a safety device
Yep that’s it Thanks for watching
Although propane is considered low pressure, you will have the same problem or worse with any high pressure tank. Oxygen, argon mixes for welding, etc. You can destroy a $200 regulator in seconds. Our school was constantly having to send them in for repairs.
This problem is due to the new propane tank valves. The same problem happens with grills. The initial burst of gas pressure when you open the valve often causes a safety feature to trip in the propane tank valve. Always turn the valve on SLOWLY.
You just described my issue with my griddle in a cold weather. I figured out all by myself, and forgot already. I would never know generators may have the same issue. Thank you for reminding me. I'm installing the propane kit, and it's gonna be cold tomorrow.
I am troubled by their lack if customer support. It seems that you had a device which should have been covered under a warranty and not only would they not fix the problem (their AUTHORIZED WARRANTY SERVICE CENTER didnt have parts), they also wanted to SELL you a new part and have you do the work. Am i missing something? I am considering buying one of their units, but I expect it to work and if it doesn't, I expect them to fix it.
I've owned a WEN 4750 dual fuel generator for 6 years and have never had a problem. Recently, it got me through 11 days of no power from Helene. I only use propane, but after watching this video, what the hell.. I'll open the valve slowly from now on.
Glad you made it through Helene. Thanks for watching
Yup, I had a very similar issue. It's with any propane bottle... not the generator. It's the gov't mandated safety device. I paid no attention to how fast I was opening the valve, and could get absolutely nothing out. Even took it to the filling spot... and it worked fine for them. Of course. I learned you have to open the valve VERY slowly. Otherwise you will get no flow, or LOW flow. Lesson learned.
Thanks for watching
Solution - buy a Honda! :D :D :D
Description of actual problem starts at 6:09
👍🏽
Know your equipment. Propane tank safety or regulator.
I have had problem with propane heaters by opening too fast. It is the regulator that is thinking there is a leak and restricting the flow of propane.. I have been told to get around the problem is to go to a 2 stage regulator. I did that and so far no problems.
Awesome and useful video. Thank you for your time making this video.
I need to try this on the weekend. I saw mention of this on another channel as well. I have the same exact model. Was dealing with similar issues with trying to get it run on propane. My generator has less than 10 hours so no way valves, spark arrest, or spark plug would be an issue yet. I had also heard mention that choke shouldn't be required if on propane since it is coming in pressurized and bypasses the gas portion of the carburetor anyway where the choke is. Not completely sure I buy that but may test it anyway. Glad I found this video!
Thanks for your comment. I’ve had a lot of people telling me I don’t need to choke it to start but that’s not true. I’ve tested it several times and it won’t start without it. Thanks for watching
This can happen with any propane regulator, even those on propane grills. The problem is in the propane tank's safety valve (OPD valve).
i figure this out on propane grill many years ago all regulators for propane are the same
Could have simply been that the OPD in the tank was limiting flow due to opening the valve too fast.
Surprised they didn’t suggest running it on gas to see if it was on the propane side. Would have cut to the chase pretty quick. Great video!
Thanks for the great video. Have the same unit and now I know!!
Thanks for watching
This is common knowledge about propane. This not only affects generators, but grills as well.
Thank you for this video. I have this same type of generator. U are what makes America Great. I also discovered this phenomenology with my roofing torch many years ago. If I opened the propane too fast the torch would have little flame. I believe this is a Safety Feature built into regulators to prevent "flare outs". Always slowly open propane tank valve. I used my generator (flawless performance) the first time during Hurricane Beryl here in Houston this summer. I had never connected the regulator issue to any problems that the generator might present. YOUR VIDEO IS INVALUABLE. Especially for those who are depending on it during crisis. It is good to also have multiple backups like solar and perhaps another generator. The attraction and advantages of propane are evident. Trouble Free Long Term storage.
