The Making of 'Pocket Calculator': Kraftwerk, The Bee Gees Rhythm Machine Toy Synth, and FREE STEMS!
What do a toy synthesizer and a calculator have in common? Kraftwerk used them to revolutionize music forever! Today, I’m diving into their iconic track “Pocket Calculator” from the visionary Computer World album. These quirkiest tools used to shape electronic music came from the toy aisle: The Bee Gees Rhythm Machine was designed as a kids’ synthesizer in 1978, and the Casio FX-501P calculator debuted in 1979. The Rhythm Machine's charming simplicity inspired not only Kraftwerk but countless musicians drawn to its nostalgic sound and retro vibe. Think of it as the predecessor to today’s pocket synths, showing us how even the simplest tools can make a lasting impact!

My first controller for my akai s900... MEMORIES!!!!
I love the size of this machine even today. Cheers!
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
álways nice to pay tribute to one of the greatest songs and artists of all time so thanks for that! For me the big secret is how he made those rhythmic flanged/delayed/reverbed (?) effects between the beats... been trying it for years but never came close... for me that was what made the track unique
Absolutely, it seems simple when you listen to the track but once you put your hands on it it becomes very difficult to emulate, I don't think I was even closer but it is fun to at least try to do it and learn from the masters like Prince.
Oh these Keys are wrong
Its that freaky off beat bassline that makes it
That bass is so clever in this track!
I had one of those BG toys for Xmas at the time.. didn't know the band had found a use for it though.
@@nuNWO yes, they turn the sound of a little toy into an iconic track tune. Cheers!
Back in the day these sounded to me exactly the same as the rhythm section on every home organ that so many people seemed to own at the time. It was only when they were used out of context by JMJ et al that I began to take an interest in them. Lack of imagination on my part!
@@Kevinfordsynthesizers It is still a very limited sound, it will be hard to make an entire album using only this machine but but I like the warmth of it.
man that was amazing , thank U 🙂 wondering why they did not continued work on another album like Computer World that album brought them recognition around the world, that sound is still recognize today :-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
@@wasiuuu1 Thanks so much! I guess they are the type of project that keeps exploring constantly for a new sound which is in part the beauty of Kraftwerk. Cheers!

@@alsimons7925 Thanks for nice words. I enjoy making these videos a lot. Cheers!
That jam sounded right up there with songs like “K-Jee” from the *Saturday Night Fever* soundtrack and Madonna’s “Holiday”.
Those are nice reference tracks you are mentioning there and for sure an indirect inspiration. 🎚️
That wasn’t it
@@CannedFunkMusic thanks for watching 🙏🏽
I've loved drumcomputers since the first time I heard them, maybe Herby Hancock's Rock It, or Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. But I've always found Prince's use of drumcomputers poor, clumsy, grating and ugly. But it's a matter of taste, I guess.
Personally I like it and you can instantly recognize it as a Prince song by listening to the drum computer, but if you don't like it, you don't like it. As you said it is a matter of taste. Cheers!
I have the yellow vinyl 45. It's one of my most treasured records. I first heard the song on the Dr Demento show.
@@bsquared4604 I was lucky to find a copy recently and it is also part of my most beloved treasures. Now I want the tape yellow version. 🫠
Would Clear by Cybotron a cool one to explore? An electro classic. Many times sampled. But for always a real synth classic
That's an amazing track that totally has the Kraftwerk influence. I will start putting the recipe together for this track and thanks for watching!
This is pretty fantastic. I know all Kraftwerk albums by heart, but never knew they used this device for the melody line. Awesome! I wonder what you can do with Giorgio Moroder’s 1977 album From Here to Eternity. Particularly the track Utopia/Me Giorgio. As far as I’m concerned this track is the Mother of EDM. What do you think?
I know right, who would have thought that they used a real calculator and this little toy to make such an iconic song. Love the Giorgio Moroder's suggestion and I truly believe Giorgio Moroder was ahead of the game and discovered Techno with Donna Summer's 'I feel Love' and with this 1977 album. Cheers!
Krafty. Both original song and your vid!
Thanks Sam! 🎛🤖
Superb reconstruction! Pocket Calculator was the first single I ever bought!
Thank you so much for the nice words and what a great single get as your first. Cheers!
The "upslide" melody in the background was orginally made with a Dübreq Stylophone btw., as seen in Kraftwerks live performance. But I didn't knew the "Bee Gees Drum Machine" before. Anyhow, very interesting video and a very good recreation of the song.
That's a graet piece of information I didn't know! Thank you so much for the nice words, I heard Kraftwerk are having a tour in 2025 here in the United States, excited to see them again, such an inspiration.
Just discovered this amazing channel and I wanted to thank you for all the amazing content you create. You truly deserve the support!
I really appreciate the support and the nice words! 🎛🎚🙏
...almost forgot about the question of which artists should be covered next. How about Matt Bianco, the first successful act of the new jazz genre? Or if Matt has already been covered (unaware if). What about New Wave supergroup "Missing Persons", high-class musicians partly from Frank Zappa's environment with Terry Bozzio as world class drummer and live as great as on the record (in '83 not now) with a synth castle on stage even today many crave for.
I like all of them but I from the thones you mention Missing Person is my number one. I will put it on my list and plan something around that. Thanks Gerald and take care!
@NostalgicExplorer Nice! Take care as well!
I've never heard of the BeeGees toy rhythmer & so great to hear the name of the calculator providing the ring modulated noises on "Taschenrechner". Besides, you covered my favorite Kraftwerk song of all time. Though it's from '81 I've first heard it in the.summer of '83 & tried immediately to accomp with VL1 as a little boy. Actually the whole music part of the song should be managable with just a multi tracked VL-1, except noises & rhythm patches of course.
It is such an amazing song, fun fact I use to sing that song to my son that now is 12, I was lucky enough to take him to their concert here in New York a few years ago, he was maybe 8 and had su much fun, since then he is a Kraftwerk devoted listener. The VL-1 for sure will do the job with this track. Cheers!
@NostalgicExplorer ...& you sing it in English to your son? I've heard it in German, English & Italian. I guess a Mexican version would be fun.
@@Gerald_Daniel Yes, English is the one I play to him but in the concert they had a mix of Italian, German, English and Spanish as well. I can definitely work a Mexcian version of that 🎚
@NostalgicExplorer Before you answered, I've fed the translator with the German lyrics. That was admittedly the very 1st time watching that Mexican as an independent language does not exist. Late but still learned something "new".🤒Anyway I'm sure there are Mexican dialects. I'd enjoy a Mexican version. Perhaps Kraftwerk is already watching you. 👁️🗨️➿👁️🗨️
That sh!t sounds like some cheesy as cover tune version
I had no idea. Very interesting. That whole album is great.
Thanks for watching and indeed, the entire album is great, I also love Man Machine and Autobahn a lot. Cheers!
Exactly as you say “not an exact replica” but you got so much of it right! :D
@@R_Durand hey! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this exploration!
I bought this years ago for 4 Euro at a flew market in Düsseldorf. Funny thing.
That's a score there! Cheers
Awesome video BRo ☺♥♪
Thanks for watching! 💜
Cymbal crash?
No one played a drum machine like Prince.
Totally agreed
I love "Po-Po Rain" and "When Ducks Cry" too.
😂😂
Clem Fandango would approve of that T-shirt
I can hear you Clem Fandango!
THAT. WAS. POORLY REPRODUCED
"When Doves Cry" came out when I was 12. I had already heard "Uptown" on the radio in 1980, & thought it was funky & sounded different. I was 8 then. Bought my 1st Prince albums when "1999" came out when I was 10, after winnin $100.00 at school. I bought the "1999" & "Controversy" LPs the same day. Once I heard "When Doves Cry", I couldn't believe my ears, & once I saw the video, it was over!! I was like "this cat took it to a whole other level." At 12 years old all this was hard to xplain & take in. Prince did seem like he was from anotha planet durin that time, & many times b4 & after.. Bruh was killin it!
I understand. I was even younger when Purple Rain came out and I remember listening for the first time on TV and then I bought a compilation album that had it and it was the only song that sounded different from the others in the compilation. A cousin of mine had the album and it blew my mind.
Fabulous!
Thanks for watching
The keyboard rhythm isn’t quite right. 1/4, 1/8 1/8, 1/4, 1/4 rest 1/8. 1/16, 1/8 rest 1/8, 1/4 Sort of tough to read written like this, but this is correct.
You didn't quite get the drum programming right. Close, but no. Also, don't you have a DX-7?
How many pop tunes sans bass part have topped the charts?
That's a great question. So far I know only this one.
I just thought of one, @ , “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” by Steam. Their original version of that song just includes Steam’s pianist, Paul Leka, playing all the keyboard parts and doing tape splices of the drummer. No bass. And, it reached number #1.
Anything by White Stripes, Thats Not My Name by the Ting Tings, early Black Keys, more than one Prince cut Paralyzed by Legendary Stardust Cowboy
Great that you showed how to play the other sounds. Have you ever done Pet Shop Boys " what have i done " ? That beat pretty full with percs. Also like Kate bush " running up te hill "
@@ipainthouses3084 I have done West End Girls but it will be nice to work on 'What Have I Done' and I am.actually working on the Kate Bush 'Running Up That Hill'
@NostalgicExplorer Nice , ill have to look that 1 up. Yeah , that what have i done has a lot going on in the drums i believe , with percs. It sounds like a construction site 🤣
@ipainthouses3084 😂
Nicely done. This song was an instant classic but the LM-1 undergirded the entire track.
Thanks for.waching and absolutely. It seems that he wanted to.showcase the nice sound of this machine in this track.
Yes it is ! The 626 is my 808 .
And way more affordable
the LINN Drum is supposed to come out this year from Behringer... looking forward to it. Apparently they bought the Tears for Fears Linn Drum, and are making it to spec.
Virtual instruments for the LINN have existed for a long time now. We don't need Behringer to make a cheap Chinese copy.
@@Great-DocumentariesYes we do!
@@Great-Documentariesabsolutely we do. Fukk using software instruments sitting in front of a computer. We already spend enough of our lives in front of those stupid things.
You need two more rim shots on 2 and the and-of-2 in the second measure.
Yeah, it is an approximate recreation, After I listened to it several times and read the comments from this amazing community I noticed that I might have missed some parts. I will do an updated version soon. It was fun to work on this though. Cheers and thank you so much for watching!
@@NostalgicExplorer I have recreated this in Ableton and your video showed me a ton of stuff I missed. Drooling over that LM-1!!
@@torque91 Thanks and that LM-1 is one of my favorite machines in my collection. Cheers!
Dont make such videos if you cant nail it. Sorry
Thanks for the feedback! I create these videos as a way to learn from masters like Prince. There is always so much room for growth, and I always thought that if you don't experience it yourself, you won't truly learn. My intention with these videos is to share my love for music and my passion for synths and drum machines.
@@NostalgicExplorer well said
Video starts @ 03:05 btw this is not accurate
Thanks for watching!
You're missing some beats there on the drum machine
No question the Prince is the instrument used to record the song
Nice !!!
This is soooo cool
Thanks for watching!
i liked this video! i really want to consider one of these neat things but i wanna learn about the different models and each features they have!
There are some slight differences in terms of capabilities. For example, the OM-27 only allows you to play 27 different chords, while the OM-84 offers 84 chords but lacks MIDI functionality. On the other hand, the OM-200m, OM-300m, and QC Chord models include MIDI. The QC Chord was the last model released before the recent launch, but its chords are, I’d say, a bit cheesier and not as analog-sounding as the earlier models. Choosing the right one depends on whether you need MIDI functionality and the type of sound you’re looking for. Personally, I prefer the OM-84 for its sound quality, while the OM-200m or OM-300m are great options if MIDI is a priority. Cheers!
can not listen to this guys broken english accent. torture!
Ridiculous comment. I’m grateful for the time and effort he put into this. Being an obsessed LM1 owner myself I recognize the love. To me his voice has character & sincerity and he probably speaks several languages more eloquently than a wonder bread keyboard warrior ever could.
