The Book Channel celebrates children's books and their creators. Here you will discover new books and learn about your favourite authors. You'll get to hear about the latest books. And if you are a teacher or school librarian, there's advice on choosing books for your classroom too.
The Book Channel is hosted by Nikki Gamble.
Nikki has 40 years of experience in education as a teacher and teacher educator, providing literacy training and resources for schools. She has worked extensively in schools across the UK and internationally. She is the author of Exploring Children’s Literature (4th edit) (2019), Co-author of Guiding Readers (2016) and Poetry by Heart. Nikki has been a KS2 reading advisor, series consultant for Oxford University Press, and content creator for the Oxford School Improvement and Oxford Owl websites. She is currently the Director of Just Imagine.

What advice would you give when a book children have requested and voted for as a class read, just isn't working for the teacher reading aloud and some but not all of the children?
I would probably change it if the experience isn't working. But I would think about how to make it a positive ending. Stop at a place where the children enjoying it want to read on. Say something that makes it feel like a good conclusion, rather than you've just decided you don't want to read anymore. Make sure there are copies of the book available for those that want to finish it to read independently/ Then, for the next choice, I would follow Ben's advice about guided choice. That way the teacher knows they already love the book.

As you can read, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer when we talking about english, so I wanted to put my asked favour in the smallest nutshell I can possibly imagine.
