Never Ever burn off mercury with a blow torch, unless you want birth defects....... This is totally irresponsible. To retrieve and reuse mercury you can retort it, you must Always keep it in water, Mercury start to evaporate above 23 degrees Celsius. The fastest and easiest way to get rid on Mercury from gold is to use 1 or 2 ml of nitric acid, it dissolves the mercury instantly... Then rinse the gold serval times, then smelt into a button.

would it not have been better to skip that whole melting into a nugget step before putting it in the nitric acid? It seem like that would make that step take way less time if it was flakes with infinitely more surface area than the nugget that you are going to basically dissolve again into pure gold dust again... Also I dont know where you live but buying nitric acid and sulfuric acid just like from the internet will get you put on all sorts of watch lists here in the USA.

Here is my boring science filled analysis : I have tried this and (surprisingly) it works ! The mixture will turn almost black meaning it is active ! After a while it will clear up to a transparent-yellow juice that looks like pee-pee out of a we-we meaning it doesn't do squat no more. I added a bit more peroxide and it had a second life but less effective. After a couple of days the small chunks of gold where all unglued from the board. Then God told me I should start anew, so I did. After 3 batches, even the freaking big chunks of gold like those found under finger pads where floating free. It is a miracle ! Faith is a wonderfull thing. Sorry you had to read all of this boring scientific stuff.
