Nice - love that feeling when a bit of lateral thinking can make such a significant difference. Is it worth simulating to find out what the likely maximum compressed map size might be? I never like to set arbitrary bounds, but I guess a value is needed.. will it ever be bigger than 1.6k?)

That's a neat algorithm... I'm wondering if the character set is small enough you could tokenise the characters to parts of a byte rather than a byte per ascii character.. funnily enough I've been looking at a custom compression algorithm for a project that I've been failing to work on 😁

Andrew Moore is a genius - this game is unlike anything else I've ever come across on all the other platforms/machines so it really is unique. His tour de force however is... DEFENCE FORCE - ahh, I think you have covered it in one of your reviews, fella. As someone once said - the best visual effects seen on ANY small 80s micro - viva Andrew Moore - one of the Oric's best programmers way back then.

It's not the world's best Oric game but I liked the title / presentation and digitised Andy Green screens - all very impressive - and so is the smooth player and baddies movement. As for controls and gameplay... that's where the paranoia and nightmares begin - well demo'd, fella - you persevered longer than I could! Give him a retro medal someone 🙂

Superior Software aren't quite aptly named for their Oric releases! They did some half decent stuff for the Beeb though... 🙂

To answer your question, Retroginge, in a word, No! The keyboard on the Atmos is miles better. Also Oric included a little tape loading fix on their welcome tape which helps to suppress over-fussy tape loading error messages. it's basically called "*" if I recall correctly so check your demo tape. I also believe there was another version of the ROM released which also reduced over zealous tape loading error reporting. Yes, there are two versions of the 1.1 ROM as per - the second version had the cassette loading routine modified so there weren't so many 'Errors Found' messages and by typing ?PEEK (#E4B6) you can discover which version you have. A result of 162 is the earlier Rom and 142 is the later version. (Oric-1 ROMs should give a result of 48). Also, you are correct in thinking that a whole load of Oric-1 games DO NOT run on the Atmos as ROM addresses were changed in some areas and so companies often released an Atmos and an Oric-1 version of a game to address this incompatibility problem on some software releases.

Looks like an almost unplayable version of Monsters or Cuthbert Goes Digging (as I used to play on the Dragon 32) .. if your character moves so much slower than fhe monsters, you've got no hope of digging a hole in time... How frustrating!

Un-watchable. Much too much moving. Makes one car sick. Worse videographer ever.

Please don't strip it down for parts until you have thoroughly researched it online. It maybe a one of a kind and there are plenty of enthusiasts site to be found. Don't let it be lost from history.

Not a bad clone of Centipede, I never played this one back in the day, the lack of colour graphics put me off but the gameplay looks to be decent enough, it doesn't look as good as Mushroom Mania but not a bad game for 16k users, there really wasn't many good 16k games on the Oric.

Here is an open invitation to play test this game. I have a virtual machine i am setting up and I can invite people in to test remotely using an Apple ii emulator. I would only ask that to make notes and provide some feedback. I am currently 60% through and am fixing stuff as I go, mostly mapping updates.

This era was amazing if you were there at the time. We had nothing like it before.

If you watch the atmos welcome tape on a real Atmos and on real crt (can't remember if uhf or cvbs, try both!) the animated flying duck is a brighter yellow than what you can get yourself, I don't know/never find out how they did it......

I've been looking at USB EPROM writing tools from our friendly international electronic suppliers.. looks like a perfect candidate for burning a new CP/M ROM for the collection (although maybe swapping the position of existing ones might uncover a bad slot rather than a bad ROM) Great find, though - happy word processing!

See this is why retro computing is so much better than todays kit. I type this on my laptop with absolutely no soul and there we have this interesting oddball of a board covered in switches and bodge wires that somebody was using. Nice find, really interesting to see.

This was one of the first games I got for my Oric and one of my favourites too, solid arcade action.

I've always been fascinated with video game development and have made several mods and even contributed some 3D models to a couple of games that were released on Steam but I have always struggled with the programming aspect despite many attempts. I was reasonably proficient with Basic back when I had my Oric 1, after many hours of typing in magazine listings I picked up a few things but I never really progressed beyond that level, it's been an endless source of frustration for me over the years. So I have a lot of respect for anyone who has mastered the art, I'm also a little envious if I'm being honest.

I'd completely forgotten about AGP ports .. when graphics cards had their own interface - certainly dates the motherboard to a particular era! I'd love to know where you find all these old bits of tech - FB marketplace or your garage?

Oh gosh.. I've got a rubber key spectrum and wouldn't want to part with it (although I love the look and form factor of the plus .. might have to get myself one. Or a 128.. you've got me looking at eBay now...) Do the plus 2 & 3 count as Sinclair Spectra given they were made by Amstrad..? I'd imagine the clickety keyboard was similar to that if the CPC464 😁 Great fix!

Upgraded means that you toke the board from the rubber key spectrum and place in a the housing of a spectrum +
