Onyx Rhomboid Backsplash

Interlocking rhomboid design. Concept, fabrication and install by gueuzeman. All tile started from 12" (30 x30cm) squares. Volatile stone was very stressful to play with every day. Glad it turned out as well as it did, also glad to move on to something a bit less mentally traumatic.

That's a nice shirt the bass player is wearing, Dugs
Where did you get the floor tile
would be great to see these guys back together again!
Issue is not ditra, it’s the subfloor movement lol 😂
Hey guys shit happens thanks for sharing
Mike !
You should have watched some videos on RUclips
What are your sheets made of?
So how are you finishing the tile?
Don't why it's a ditra problem. Falls on the people who put subfloor in and tile setters for not checking and making sure it was screwed off correctly
Love Lughead and miss Valentines
Rip it out and start again.
Thanks for sharing this. I am getting ready to install my first Ditra underlayment and this is something to definitely check. 👍
ITS NOT THE FLOOR use your muscles! Never have had this problem
If I saw u doing this to my house, don’t let the door hit you in the ass. Recovery attempts are not solutions.
Idiots
Thanks for teaching me about the possible pitfalls. I need to know it all! I appreciate you sharing this info.
Good reminder , check the subfloor first then install DITRA , got it !! Thank u
Looks awesome bummer about the subfloor 😩. Dam I'm fussy tho I would have had those drainage surround cuts done a bit tighter
I give props for them to identify the problem and stop unlike others who would still keep working and tile the floor knowing it will fail later on
Not an expert by any means. But, all the experts with videos about laying tile flooring or any flooring for that matter. First step is always, check the floor for soft spots, loose screws/nails and level. If this is always step one, why did you miss it? I appreciate the fact you admitted your mistake and explained what happened. However it's still a little disconcerting a professional would miss or skip this critical step. It may also lead one to believe if you skipped it on this job you may have skipped it on some or all of your other jobs. To me it's akin to a pilot not checking to see how much fuel is in the tank before takeoff. Given that everything else relies on there being fuel in the airplane for everything to function. Step one is a step you never want to forget or skip. IMHO.
Years ago I was working for a paint contractor and we were doing epoxy floors in this testing facility, we were working the weekend and this particular room had to be done by Monday. It was a Friday night and I had worked all day and was there working at night to get the job done in time. There was a guy mixing the epoxy and I was pouring it and using a notched squeegee( was a floodcoat) this room was pretty big around 100'x140'. I finnished spreading an area and went to get another bucket load of mixed epoxy that the other worker had mixed and let cook, he handed me a bucket and I walked over to the next section on my pin shoes, I poured it and it seemed to spread differently than the other buckets I poured. I called over to the guy mixing and asked if this was mixed with both parts a & b he assured me it was I asked him again to check, he said it's all the same stuff mixed exactly like the rest. So I continued on and Finnished the room. We left and I went home to sleep, the next day I get a call right before I was leaving to head back, it was the boss screaming at me there was a 15×20ft section that never dried right in the middle of the floor. Just like I had thought the guy never added the hardner to that batch I questioned him about. The boss was obviously pissed and had good reason, I explained to him what happened the night before and told him what I had thought happened as he continued to yell and scream. He made me scrape and wipe it off and when I had the unmixed epoxy off the floor he fired me and told me he was keeping my weeks pay to pay for the fuck up. The other guy kept his job without even being disciplined! Obviously I'm partially to blame but imo that should have fallen on the other guy, I was doing my job wich was hard enough and even had caught it be he assured me it was ok. What do you think about that?
We learn lessons; however, your boss was wrong. Since he kept the other guy (Mr. Mess-up), your boss will get what he deserves. You learned new skills and a new response to screw-ups. Keep your head up. You're the winner!
Haha freaking noobs!!
Do you not wait for the drypack to cure for 3 days prior to applying the liquid membrane?? Did you waterproof the next day?
You woulda been ok driving 1 5/8 deck screws past the schluter and recessing into top layer of plywood, but you woulda needed to do a ton just to make sure. A strip fed screwgun does the trick, but you may have to set them deeper with an impact
Rip the whole floor up and start a fresh.
Thanks for being humble enough to post a video that will save many others costly mistakes!
Use hardybacker with a bunch of screws nex time
Pure Again was always my favorite Lughead song. Thanks for the memories guys.
Amazing work. You're an artist.
god damn it....
I'm confused of what the problem was? Yes spongy mat was the problem, but what actually caused it and how can it be prevented? Was the subfloor not screwed down properly? If that's the case how does a tiler miss something like this? Not asking to be a dick, just want to know what to look out for and how to prevent this from happening to me. Did the floor not flex before installing mat? Or did you just go in expecting the guys did a great job, like they normally do and just not think to check? Again not trying to be an ass These are sincere questions. Appreciate the vid...much rather learn from others mistakes than my own on stuff like this. Lol
good job boys. Love these videos as they show that we are human. I'm sure that many haters are commenting but don't let them get you down.
why would you install the ditra knowing the subfloor was not secured and was moving. thats the first thing to check if the subfloor was sound before you install the ditra. so you dont have to do these fixes afterwards smh
Guys you should really start over and maybe even redo the sub floor or at least screw it down with as many screws as it takes. You might also check to insure that the floor joists are well secured.
Good god that type of onyx is hideous don't know what people were thinking back then. Lol
doing this a long time. I still amaze myself at some of the dumb shit i do. Been exactly there with you. Laugh and power through....
This should never have been an issue. Why would you put a product that costs $250/roll over a floor you haven't even checked? Good luck putting down 24" tile on that floor, even with your "repairs".
Thank you for letting us all learn from this. You have saved others money by letting us know how to check ahead of time.
I used Ditra last week, tore it up and threw it away. Too much movement. I have very expensive 12x24 porcelain tile going down and there is no way I'd use this crap!!
The Ditra isn't the problem.
Bottleworksnet ditra is useless, do the floor correct and you do not need it. It's designed to articulate pressure points to avoid cracking
Your humility and transparency has blessed us more than you know. Kudos to you for being willing to take criticism and showing how NOT to do something. You guys are bold. Awesome. Thanks!!!
Handyman special , always check your subfloors
I give this video a huge thumbs up! Thanks for showing us what not to do.
So basically this is your own fault. You didn't check the subfloor before installing the Ditra. You can only blame yourselves for that that one. ^^ Remove the Ditra, remove the subfloor, check the supporting beams for rot, place new boards properly and start over with Ditra again. I know, not cost effective, but it's the only logical thing you can do, trust me.
I've been in the trades for about 40 years and have met only two types of people working within it - those that think they know it all and criticize others, and those that know what they're doing and offer suggestions. so many negative comments. geez, be supportive. yes, mistakes cost more time and money, but at least they admitted to making one, and are trying to teach others from their experience. one thing some of yall were so quick to do was to negate what they said about the people that laid the floor - that they were trusted. instead, you just started ragging on them and talking about yourselves. give these guys some credit.
Absolutely.
To one extent, you are correct. To another, this is not just some mistake. This is typical of people who think they are tile setters simply because they can trowel out some mud and plop some tile on it Professional setters do not walk in and just start laying tile or uncoupling membrane or anything else for that matter without first checking deflection on the entire floor. And missing this amount of deflection in the subfloor even when you are NOT looking for it is, at best, not knowing enough about your job that you should be doing it independently of someone who DOES. So typical.
It takes a big man to admit their mistake. It takes a bigger man to film it for all to learn. So you are like the Andre the Giant of humility.
I know this is years old now but it is still getting the views and we can learn from it so thanks for sharing it. We all get problems to solve, sometimes they are of our making but often not so it is good to see. I think I would have tried to pour some self levelling compound down through those holes and jumped up and down to draw it into the voids. Then when it had set I would have put the screws in. Whatever it takes to stop it moving.
That's sketchy as fuck.
