I've done independent research on the origins of "The Raven" for almost 15 years. I'm convinced it was never Edgar Allan Poe's poem in the first place. It was, as I believe, written by Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. All Poe did was to publicly claim authorship as a scam. This poem was written in roughly Mathew's preferred style. I could provide many examples, including a few which were written before 1845. Poe didn't write in this style before 1845, and he never used pseudonyms. Mathew always used pseudonyms. It was Mathew who published it under the pseudonym "---- Quarles" in the February, 1845 edition of "American Review." Poe just managed to scoop him by three days in the daily newspaper he wrote for, the New York "Evening Mirror."
