Third Year Otago Geology Student Project Locations Animation (1984-2022)
Просмотров 862 года назад
One of the strengths of the Otago Geology undergraduate degree is the emphasis on field geology. In addition to many group field trips our third year tauira (students) complete an independent project. This animation, centred on Otago New Zealand, shows the locations of the 761 third year student projects completed from 1984 to 2022. www.otago.ac.nz/geology/study/papers/index.html?papercode=geol...

Heavy Minerals in Westland - Fieldwork (Otago Geology)
Просмотров 1823 года назад
Heavy (dense) minerals are useful indicators of interesting geological processes and often contain rare elements. In 2021 a group from Otago Geology headed to the mountains near the Buller River on the west coast of South Island of New Zealand searching for these heavy minerals. This video shows some of what they got up to and some of the really beautiful places they visited. Video by James Sco...

Otago Geology - Antipodes Globe Animation
Просмотров 2913 года назад
The Antipodes - what does this mean? Australia and New Zealand are sometimes referred to as the antipodes. The term antipodes in this sense means the opposite side of the Earth - the furthest away it is possible to be while still on the surface of the Earth. However as illustrated in these images, Australia isn't actually 'the antipodes' to any land. It is antipodal to the North Atlantic Ocean....

    It shows that you add date for your first type... but farther along in the video you say the types are bedding, lineation, etc which can be the unique values... Can you clarify this?

    I think you skipped the part where you list the different point types for the different measurements such as bedding, joint, lineation, etc...

    Good advice; a lot of manual intervention. It would be ideal to be able to bring oreintated symbols and dips straight from a FieldMove KMZ file into QGIS. I'm on the case!

    You guys couldn’t check a few samples I’ve found. I actually witnessed a fireball. And I searched all over and found some rocks that resemble meteorites but I can’t get anyone to check them. Ive got some with greenish yellow circle crystals all over then, some extremely magnetic but I’m no expert would love to have them checked after having them for over a year.

    My hometown, 4 till 19. Volcanic landscapes were all I knew! (And "Hi!" - I might even know some of you.) So strange seeing it from the sky like this - so many of my memories dotted everywhere. (Some truly terrible! - Won't go into that one!) I did find this a bit rushed, however. Too 'swoopy'. I'd like to see a chronological sequence as the landscape builds and as the eruption-centres shift around. Then the erosion stages, the sea-level invasions .. until now. But with a more slowly-shifting, sometimes fixed POV. Okay, that's a big ask of any 3D animator!

    Thanks for this video! Really useful. Do you have any tips on displaying strike/dip data into a 3D scene in ArcGIS Pro? I tried following the same steps shown here. However, the symbols do not keep their orientation as I rotate the scene (i.e. they do not move with the ground).

    • @OtagoGeology
      @OtagoGeology 2 года назад

      Thanks for your comment. For correct 3D display and rotation view the Symbology Properties for the symbols and under 3D behavior untick Billboard. Also set the elevation of the layer to be on the ground. You may have to add a cartographic offset if the terrain is steep. I hope this helps.

    Faults are cool but we definitely need more about the Port volcano. Come on, it's a volcano, the sexiest of all units! We have great exposures! It's a geological mystery! Okay, so maybe the tomography is hinting at a subducted plate window or something but whatever man, it's still not getting enough love.
