Cessna 205 catastrophic engine failure while flying on an IFR flight plan from S36 (Seattle, WA) to KMYV (Sacramento, CA) Cruising at 9,000 feet. IO-470-S engine suddenly vibrated and then immediately exploded, stopping the propeller instantly. Glide and divert to KHIO (Hillsboro, OR) captured on a GoPro Hero. ATC audio partially from LiveATC.net. No word yet on cause of failure, photos at the end of the video show the damage.
Video starts 1:20 after initial exchange with ATC. Thanks to Portland Departure for the help and coordination.

Thanks for having the GoPro.
Any landing like this, is perfect! No injuries, no damage to anything.
You deserve props! Nice landing. Good communication. Well done sir!
So quiet, a guy can hear himself think enough to grease it on
Well, there goes 50k
Is gliding an airplane back to ground something you learn or something you figure out?

You need to be careful, the P 38s had a bad habit of locking the elevator down with aerodynamic buffering near the speed of sound lol! A flaw in the original design! Maybe you should install the flitting on the wings between the wing and booms like Ole Kelly Johnson and the famed skunk works came up with lol! That flitting today is called vortex generators! Anyhow great job Ole school! I say that in a endearing way because I'm Ole school too! Awesome 👌
Text book!!!😎👍🏼
Speed can be converted to maneuverability or altitude, which can be converted, etc etc. To summarize...great job, and for sure viewing the engine. To take a line from a French movie (Le corniaud) looking the state of the engine, "it's sure it's going to run much less well"
That was truly impressive, albeit with a little luck.
Wow. Respect.
So quiet in the cockpit and in the sky like that. You must feel like a UFO
Oh that engine really said "na I'm done"
metal fatigue?
not an expert but i am pretty sure an engine isnt supposed to bend like that.
Great job!
Incredibile composure and also incredible what happened to the engine
This man did a great job .A lot of people would went nuts .Iam82 in 2 months and had 5 planes (JESUS BLESSED ME) a 172-182 -180 2 of them and a 206. I learned to fly the back country in Idaho and Alaska .Only had one wreack in Atlanta Idaho on skies .i wasn't flying .was setting in the back seat on take off and all of a sudden tail wind. the pilot (Ray Aronld of Cascade Idaho was in command and of course no brakes we just went to the end of the strip and went nose first in about 6 to 10 feet of snow Ray was great) Just some minor fixes and flew out the next day . Had to change my shorts. I di have some close calls .we were coming home from Alaska and had stoped in Smithers Canada over night .I was Pilot in command and the man with me was also a pilot .was gas up in the morning and I ask him to ck the oil and he did but did not put the oil cap back on (I learned to always pulled the cap out on a little chain. so you don't do what he did) about at 800 feet the windshield was covered in oil .I don't know how but I pulled the power to idel and turned around and landed on the strip (it was a gift from GOD) . The people at the air port and the tower could not belive it. stay safe. Thanks
Watch sharks being most about this video, is that it's already 2 years old.
Awesome job God bless‼️
Butter smooth landing...Only one critique. You never called mayday but ATC got the point and you did great!
Who’s this “we” he keeps talking about.
That was nothing short of superb airmanship. You used up every ounce of good fortune that was available to you with calm and professionalism. Whoever trained you would be proud as should you. Well done.
Text book emergency landing 👏
I'd fly with you a time! It socks you lost your engine but what great power management! Welcome to Oregon 😢
Did anyone catch his altitude at time of engine failure
Wow! Perfect estimate of altitude, speed, distance etc. perfect landing
Smoo...Like butter!
Picture perfect wow 👍
Sweet😊
That's so cool, must have been so scary but such a smooth landing
What happened to the engine? Cause?
And this is why I will never fly
Question.. Could he have parachuted out of the plane if he needed to?
That silence is deafening.
great job.....
that engine damage was something else! but that landing was on point well done thankyou for sharing
This entire video is a globe earth psyop, isn’t it?
Very well done, great landing. You stayed incredibly calm.
OUTSTANDING KEVIN! Man, that was so good! You have ice in those veins brother!
Forgot to say Mayday or Emergency. I assume the controller declared for you?
Great Job!
How did Woody from Toy Story say it? “Thats not flying, its falling with style” amazing job by the pilot and Air Traffic Controllers, you’d think he’s been through that before.
That should buff right out.
I have a question: so, what did you miss in the pre-flight check of the airplane? Surely the catastrophic failure must have been there in plain sight? <- he he
"Engine! We don't need no stinking engine!"
Some WD-40, a BFH , a roll of duct tape, and a can of spray paint,....that engine will be good as new! :o) What the heck, man? You blew the engine into separate chunks,...separate LARGE chunks. Do you have any other tricks that you can do for our entertainment? By the way,...nice landing.
Superb pilot
🙏👍👍👍👍👍👍
