Packing a Michigan State Board Practical Exam Kit

On another note for those who may notice, I don't have 22 towels packed like i use in my practical videos. Instead, I am using the paper towels (or PST towels) in place of actual towels for my station set ups.
Also, don't forget to pack a mannequin head and a stand!!

I noticed you removed all the bowls from the chemical services. So if we are not distributing the product into the bowls what are the spatulas for? Are we not just dipping are brushes into the simulated color/lightner? I’m kinda confused
The spatulas are for applying the protective/base cream! Also yes, just dipping your brushes into the container - no bowls needed!
At what point do you take the chemical cape off?
during the cleanup of color retouch. for the facial, you'd then use just a towel around the neck for draping
Do we have to get only Marcel curling iron or can we get any iron?
it depends on your state but you do not need to use a marcel for michigan!

yes! you will need to provide a mannequin hand, mannequin head, a stand, blowdryer and curling iron!

Do you have to use a new cape for each exam? Do you have to paint all the nails before the exam or is it just the pinky nail?
you only need to remove the polish on the pinky, so just polish the pinky before you go into your exam! you will be draping for haircutting, chemical wave, and then a new drape for blowdry styling. the draping for facial is a towel and headband/cap.

Thank you for this! Do you have to wear anything specific to state boards? A smock or anything?
No loose, bulky clothing, scarves, hoodies, vests, jackets, shawls, cardigans and no hats or headgear unless worn for religious reasons. Do not wear a smart watch either! Wear something appropriate, basic and comfortable.
Did they stop requiring that you have to do acrylic overlay? When doing a facial do you use a different mannequin and do you have to do effleurage Petessage tapamoit? Massage techniques and do you do a massage on your hand mannequin? Do you also have to put a eyelash on?
This is based on the update from Nov 2022. You can use the same mannequin and its not required to show the massage motions but it's good to know them! You also do have to massage the hand for the manicure. No eyelash application for Michigans exam!
@@HairByDesiree thank you for getting back with me you know prior to them changing the exam November 4th of 2022 those were some of the things they used to require you to do acrylic overlay 4 cosmetology.

The school I work at doesn't offer those programs :( so I apologize that I do not know what the esthetics exam and nail tech exam entails

I went by the Basic Manicure procedure in the Milady 14th edition book! I do not know Maryland's laws so, I recommend doing some research or asking your instructors! Hope this helps!

Bruh....if you sanitize yo hands one more time😂. I only sanitized mine and my mannequin hand 1 time before the service. And passed the first time for my manicuring license.
Idk if Cosmetology is any different but I've been told you could fail every hands on things you do but if your Sanitation is good you'll still pass, so I'm sure as hell going to over sanitize to ensure I pass 😭

I polish the hand in preparation for the exam but *during* the exam, I do not polish!!
is this strictly for cosmetologists? I thought cos couldn't perform facials? I have my esti state board in June, so im just wondering if this would be accurate for me!
this is just the procedure for basic facial. it could be different for esthetics. cosmetologists can perform facials, waxing ect.

Some videos and people say there’s a mask portion for the facial. Do we not need to do a mask portion?
When I did state board practice in school we did a mask step and removed with a hot towel
the mask step is dubbed as the massage step for time purposes!

The hair should still be wet from the haircut section! You can spray again if needed!
Happy wonderful 2024 can you please tell us what type of antiseptic is used when doing the facial? Also practical do you have to put on acrylic nails on all five fingers when doing the manicuring portion? I am only knowledgeable for the cosmetology practical exam, but you do not need to polish or do acrylics! It could be different for the esthetics/nail tech test. The antiseptic is just a basic cleanser but since it's just a practical, you can use cholesterol.

You keep the same drape from the perm section through the blowdry section!

I am an apprentice in Michigan and I have had little to no guidance with the practical so this is very helpful! I was wondering if they provide the mannequin stand or if that’s something you have to bring?
As far as I'm aware, you're responsible for brings everything needed for your practical test and they don't provide anything for you. My instructors asked me if I had a stand and told me I could borrow one of theirs, but you can also order one off of Amazon. I'm taking one that clamps to the table, as it'll be easier for me to use

What would you do with the towel on the floor
You will have to toss it into the multiuse bin, sanitize your hands (or change gloves & sanitize) and then continue as normal! Say if you're out of gloves, just mimic the motion and keep going :)
Not that you will ever respond back but I wish that you could have did it more closer up close so people can see it's kind of at a distance!! where you really can't see well how you're doing the mannequin hand.🧐🤔

How many tahoes is needed since you can have them any color according to Michigan rules how many tiles is needed for the State board?

For state board, since it's just on a mannequin, you can use just water for toner and even chlorestorol for the cleanser and moisturizer! Just as long as the bottles are labeled appropriately!
