Documenting curious moments from #onthisday in #history. Ten minutes of facts and fun from Olly Mann, Arion McNichol and Rebecca Messina.
OMG! From Churchill to Chatrooms
The viral phrase ‘OMG’ has a much longer history than you might think… first being recorded on 9th September, 1917, in a letter from Lord John Fisher, a 75-year-old retired admiral, to Winston Churchill.
Fisher used it sarcastically, riffing on the idea of a new order of knighthood; playing off the similar-sounding "OM," the Order of Merit, which he himself had received. While his pun was witty, the abbreviation didn’t catch on at the time, and the acronym stayed buried in history until the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) uncovered it decades later, whilst preparing their 2011 edition.

Rerun: Clarence Saunders opened the world’s first self-service supermarket, ‘Piggly Wiggly’, in Memphis, Tennessee on 6th September, 1916. Calculating that the revenues gained through impulse purchases would outweigh those lost from shoplifting, Saunders’ concept forever changed the world of shopping for groceries - but his business acumen did not last. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly ...
Bring On The Beard Tax

Rerun: Peter The Great levied a tax on facial hair on 5th September, 1698, requiring every man in Moscow to shave or stump up some cash - although there were exemptions for the Orthodox Church. The hare-brained scheme occurred to the eccentric Peter on his expeditions through Europe, where he came to see clean chins as symbolic of progress and sophistication. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and...
The Night The Earls Vanished
Просмотров 2412 часов назад
When 90 Irish nobles, led by the Earl of Tyrconnell and the Earl of Tyrone, fled for Normandy in the dead of night on 4th September, 1607, their intentions were not entirely clear. Their escape, which became known as the ‘Flight of the Earls’, was mainly a bid for freedom from the tightening grip of English Protestant rule - but did they intend to return, securing support for a rebellion agains...
Introducing eBay

In today’s episode Arion, Rebecca and Olly look into the founding of the massive multinational e-commerce company eBay. On the day it went live it was named AuctionWeb, and was just one project among many being built by its creator, Pierre Omidyar. In fact, a significant part of the site was dedicated to information about Ebola, which happened to be a pet interest of Omidyar. In this episode, T...
Australia's Bikie Shootout
Просмотров 3916 часов назад
Millperra, a quiet suburb in southwest Sydney, is now best known for a tragic event that took place on 2nd September, 1984: a violent shootout between two biker gangs, the Comancheros and the Bandidos, which became known as the ‘Father’s Day Massacre’. As 19 armed Comancheros ambushed the Bandidos in a car park during a motorcycle swap meet, the situation quickly spiralled out of control, with ...
The Moscow-Washington Hotline

Rerun: After the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviets and Americans agreed to install a ‘hot line’ between their Presidents. On 30th August, 1963, a 10,000 mile transatlantic Washington-Moscow cable went live from the Pentagon to Red Square. In the public imagination (in part thanks to Kubrik’s ‘Dr Strangelove’), it remains a red telephone - but it is, in fact, a pair of beige teletype machines th...
How Netflix Began

When Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Reed Hastings and Mark Randolph registered the website that would become Netflix on 29th August, 1997, they named it ‘Kibble’ after a previous idea they had for a dogfood company. But their new concept - mailing DVDs out in the post - would become one of the big success stories of the dotcom era. To test the model, they sent a Patsy Cline CD through the mail; w...
How Did The Paralympics Begin?
Просмотров 34День назад
By the time the first Paralympic Games took place in Rome in 1960, the spotlight shone on 400 disabled athletes from 23 countries. Previously known as the International Stoke Mandeville Games, this event marked the beginning of a new era in sports for individuals with spinal cord injuries. The Games owed much to Dr. Ludwig Gutman, who promoted sports as rehabilitation for war veterans at Stoke ...
The Dizzy Leap From Brooklyn Bridge

Larry Donovan made headlines by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge on 28th August, 1886: a daring feat that earned him the name of the ‘Champion Jumper of the World’ and a reputation for daredevil jumps that ultimately led to his early death. Donovan, who worked for the Police Gazette, an early men's magazine filled with sensational stories, prepared for the jump via a mix of practicality and show...
Krakatoa!

The awesome, brutal power of the Krakatoa eruption, which had the explosive force of a 200-megatonne bomb, killed more than 36,000 people and cooled the entire Earth by an average of 0.6°C. Curiously, Krakatoa is not the most powerful volcanic eruption in history, but it is perhaps the most famous because it became one of the first global catastrophes, due in large part to the newly installed w...
Bogie and Bacall Burn Up The Screen
Просмотров 28014 дней назад
Rerun: Howard Hawks’ film noir ‘The Big Sleep’ finally hit cinemas on 23rd August, 1946, after extra crowd-pleasing repartee had been inserted, featuring real life couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. But more flirtation meant less exposition - making the plot of the detective story notoriously difficult to follow, even to the extent that the filmmakers had to call author Raymond Chandler ...

Rerun: The world’s first notable air raid occurred on 22nd August, 1849, when the Austrian Army attacked Venice using a fleet of 200 miniature hot air balloons, each delivering a 33lb pound bomb. Following a disastrous first attempt - when the balloons blew back on to their own men - this time the Austrians equipped each balloon with a long copper wire to trigger the detonation. The Voodoo Revolution

The creation of Haiti was the culmination of a slave revolt that began on a stormy night in the dense woods of Bois Caïman in Saint-Domingue, on 21st September, 1791, when a Voodoo ceremony led by the Jamaican-born priest Dutty Boukman called upon the enslaved Africans to reject their masters and embrace freedom in a bloody uprising. Saint-Domingue was France’s most lucrative colony, producing ...

Inside The Stanford Prison Experiment
Many years ago, I was driving from Florida to Maryland on Route 95. It was so long ago that I don't even remember what state I was in, but I needed gas, so I pulled off of the interstate and happened to see a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. It seemed like a very odd name for a store and I went in to get a few snacks for the trip home. That's my only experience with Piggly Wiggly.
Great video.
So many PID clues on here, and in the music on Abbey as well. forwards and reversed
Even my family and I walked the crossing years ago 😄
White Volkswagen? Stolen? Then sold at auction. Now at museum. Wow
A great photograph!
To get to the other side
Rubber Soul and Revolver should have been the White Album.
My fave album ever of any genre since it came out in Sept '69.
What about the Puerto Rico campaign
Naturism is a topic which has found many broadcasters/journalists/commentators wanting, so well done all three of you for avoiding the usual pitfalls. I would point out, though, that if the weather is warm enough to sit on the beach in a swimming costume, it's warm enough to sit on a beach without one :-)
❤🎉😂
He understood it correctly from the beginning. God used him to physically fix the churches to give him the experience of what he would continue to do spiritually. God gave him the work in the world as a foundation.
Tommy made a huge success of failure.
Patton, where to start? The guy that used to beat shell-shocked patients calling them cowards. Claiming Jews were lower life forms who deserved all they got! A sicko & recidivist with a very deep, deeply rooted antisemitic core with no backbone of his own, so he used his own men's backbones! 'Old blood & guts! His guts but his own men's blood! While traditionally associated with the Episcopalian faith, General George S. Patton had a personal belief in reincarnation. He often spoke of having lived past lives as a soldier in various historical periods!?
Top of the Pervs. Savile, DLT, John Peel etc.
Original is romanian🇷🇴
It exclided every language beyond the proximity of Europe. That was/is villainous and inexcusable. Live and learn, then, do better.
Thanks. Surely the point about failing to include Chinese, for example, is irrelevant. If you are making a universal language, whatever else already exists is irrelevant, surely? Granted there'd be a period of grace, as it were, in which some people remained "outsiders", but their kids would be learning, and help them at the same time. I am not well-versed enough in the higher level linguistic argument, but, long term, surely the "initial outsiders' " problems would be relatively insignificant. Just a thought. By the way, the last book on linguistics I read was "The Last Speakers", which I recommend.
These propagandist s sound exactly like the Chinese propagandists. They are laughing at themselves.
This is a carvana ad
Y'all colonists.
I've never understood why this was a mystery they were more than likely slaughtered and or enslaved by the native population.
The fact that you said more than likely shows its a mystery
The message was: 'Restore my Church, which as you can see has fallen into disrepair.' When Francis visited the Vatican to ask permission to preach, he discovered he was to repair the WHOLE Church establishment which had drifted from the teachings of Christ as described in the Gospels.
I really appreciate the effort you put into this. Thanks a lot!
When it stank? Have you been recently?
Peel made the police in England they was called Bobby's after jack the ripper then the world decided it was a good I dea from England world police worldwide 🌐 England is the maker of world's 😊
Klein was the last significant French Artist of the twentieth century. His death at age 34 ended what might've been an extraordinary career. He was just getting started. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
So iconic, it amazes me one video got him loads of subscribers
Danke
5:00 Or instead of throwing away wealth, you could for instance use it philanthropically. If you have been blessed or advantaged, do you mock the world? Or, if when your cup is full, do you help those whose cup is empty? What a spoiled and horrid man. There’s nothing to admire about this.
So, Artists shouldn't be allowed to earn a decent living if money is involved in a way which offends you, personally? That's a fascinating perspective on creativity. I suppose museums shouldn't exist either, not with Artworks which could be sold off to support your favorite causes. Have a safe and interesting weekend 🥃🐧
@@TheStockwell Of course they should earn a living. That is not what I said. Throwing away GOLD to mock your patrons if you are fortunate enough to be earning a good living, is not a good quality. If selling paintings to wealthy patrons is no longer fulfilling, why not use your good fortune to help another, rather than mock the world. Rather than feeling exploited or exploiting others. You could temporarily relieve someone else's suffering, or, you could take a tantrum and throw away gold. It is very egoistic.
interesting
This was FUNNY! I rarely laugh when I watch videos - thank you for that. :)
❤❤❤
Still very relevant in the Netherlands... Snackbar chain FEBO is quite a big player in pretty much every decent city center in the Netherlands. But its filled with warm deepfried snacks rather than regular foodstuffs.
Excellent! You should put out more videos. Looks like you’re broadcasting from The Museum of Civilization as in Station Eleven series.
Pretendian
Is this guy the MLG voice
Why does Olly look so red in this clip?
I also read that there was an evening that Henry III forced folks to get their ear pierced, but I can't seem to find that info again. Do you all have any info on that? I love the tiny details in these stories! Thank you for sharing this tidbit!
Amos 'n' Andy is one of the few instances where both the people who loved it and the people who hated it were absolutely right. 😄
That's my mother you guys talking about but people are still talking about it the story need to be told on screen
Wait, what was the correct answer for the song on which Rebecca guessed "My Sharona"? I listened three or four times and didn't hear it.
Louie Louie!
Every date including leap years?
It is so wrong seeing the podcast voices I know come out of the mouths of strangers! 😂
I still think I'd prefer the ballet first.
Mary Magdalene was not a real person - her role in the Gospel tale is that of a high priestess.
I normally don't pay too much attention to sub-3-digit-view YT recommendations but _damn_, something like this is actually a pretty nice surprise... Kinda shocked you guys don't have more subscribers, your banter as you tell these stories is pretty fun to listen to. _AND_ being compact and short-form like this makes it MUCH more interesting to me compared to most podcast-type content.
Forgotten sour grapes, maybe you but I remember. Referendum on Charlie's royal metals.
Thank the gods someone actually knows that, so many postings of this as Elvis
