02/08/25 - The Firewood Chronicles - Part 9
Now that we've nearly exhausted our current supply of seasoned firewood, our strategy involves giving the storage space a thorough cleaning and refurbishment. This preparation includes laying down fresh pallets where the new firewood will be stored, ensuring it's elevated above the moist soil-nobody likes a soggy log. Keeping it dry is essential to prevent rot and mold. Next, we'll tackle the large chunks of red oak, splitting them into more manageable sizes for efficient storage and burning. Once split, these pieces will be neatly stacked in the bays to season properly. Given that this drying process extends over many months, it's crucial to shield the wood from the elements, ensuring we...

Processing the second log into firewood was a total game-changer compared to the first. Armed with a badass chainsaw and a slicker technique, I sliced through the work like a hot knife through butter. What used to be a multi-day marathon turned into a swift, multi-hour victory. Bring on the next log - it's gonna be even faster!

With the first log now reduced to bits, it was time to stack the wood in the trailer and tidy up the workspace. Had we left it for tomorrow, with the rain coming and then those freezing temps, we'd have had to deal with a 'sawdust-icle' - a solid block of sawdust frustration! But nope, this debris is too good for that; it's got a higher calling and will be put to good use. Once the skies decide...

Today was nothing short of a triumphant success! I was like a lumberjack maestro, with my mantra of "cut & chop, cut & chop, cut and chop" echoing through the air. My determination was unstoppable as I conquered that log, chopping it down to size with precision and vigor. Mission accomplished! Now, I'm buzzing with excitement, all revved up to tackle the next big log, sending it straight to the...

Now that I've switched to a proper chainsaw with a brand new bar and chain, the project is really picking up steam. Making deep relief cuts perpendicular to the wood grain has become a breeze, allowing big chunks to split off with much less effort. I'll keep at it in the coming days, chipping away until this log is reduced to manageable bits.

As I delve deeper into this firewood processing project, it's becoming clear that all the pieces are truly coming together. Each day, I'm unearthing old tools that have been idle for too long, giving them a new lease on life by refurbishing them for their current purpose. It's not just the tools; my safety gear, which has been tucked away, is now playing a crucial role in ensuring I stay safe a...

In the grand scheme of things, it's vital to stay as resolute as a squirrel hoarding nuts for winter, chipping away at a big project one acorn at a time. Sure, progress might seem slower than molasses in January, but remember, every step is a tiny victory dance towards that big, shiny goal of a stockpile of firewood that'll keep us warm for years to come.

People say slow and steady wins the race, and in wood splitting, that's no exaggeration. You're faced with a mountain of logs, but by concentrating on each day's work, the task becomes manageable. Each swing of the axe is not just about splitting wood; it's about methodically reducing the challenge, piece by piece, until the work is done.

We were gifted with a mountain of red oak, a treasure from a neighbor's tree that reached its end. Faced with the choice of all or nothing, we embraced the challenge with open arms. Now, with seven truckloads of potential, we stand at the dawn of a new journey-turning raw oak into seasoned firewood. Each log, once part of a towering oak, is now under our axe. By next fall, it will be ready to b...

With the cooler weather setting in, finding a day suitable for painting has turned into a bit of an art form in itself. We've been playing the waiting game, strategically choosing the Goldilocks days-when it’s not too cold, but just right for getting our kitchen extension primed and painted. Fortunately, the weather gods have smiled upon us a few times, gifting us with those rare, temperate day...

The weather has finally warmed up enough to break out the paintbrushes. This is the last hurrah for our kitchen renovation before we pivot back to the porch project. We're gearing up to level the concrete floor and re-screen the porch, so Barley cat can once again lounge in his deluxe, bug-free jungle gym.

Today marked the completion of the final stage in repairing the crack in our concrete floor. We're now in a two-day curing phase, which will ensure the patch seamlessly integrates the two sections into one solid piece. The mild weather is perfect, aiding the drying process and allowing the new material to bond robustly with the existing slab. This will create a strong foundation for the final l...

The cement slab on the porch has been renewed. The epoxy adhesive in the rebar holes has fully cured. Next steps include: 1) Cutting off excess material from the rebar holes. 2) Smoothing the area to blend seamlessly with the existing concrete. This process will create six bonding shafts, securely locking the slab to the foundation. Finally, the diagonal crack in the corner will be repaired, ef...

11:54 I'm impressed with the copper drain pipe. Nice job. In the future use the 3 blade auger drill bits like Irwin - save a lot of effort and easier to control than those awful spade bits. Next time reduce the volume of background music to around 10%.

Dave, have you considered installing a sliding pocket door for your bathroom? It'll create better flow and storage space.

My 2 cents, get rid of the galvanized while you have the walls open.... It will save you in the future... I'd do the same with the cast iron and the lead bend... good luck...

I came here looking for waterproofing ideas for tick tubes. Your PVC will work just fine, but wonder why you even need the TP rolls know? Just load up the PVC tubes.
