How to Rethink Our Transport System
Is our car-centric transport system fundamentally broken? In this video I cover how the prioritising of slower forms of transport, and introducing concepts such as the 15-minute city may offer a way out.

    I appreciate the thoughtful and nuanced video compared to the "Just have a Think" video with the incredibly disingenuous "4x worse than coal" caption. I think we can look at wood burning at Drax as a large-scale pilot scheme. If we hadn't done it, we'd have no idea how practical it was, or what regulation was required. We need experiments like this to help steer policy. Experiments that tell us what NOT to do are still valuable. It should only be considered a scam or failure if we learn nothing from it and build more of them without tightening up the regulations.

    • @charleswillcock3235

    Instead of importing wood pellets from North America, instead we should have forestry on unproductive farmland here in the UK. It will provide local jobs, potentially in old and allow us to ensure that it's managed sustainably and help draw down carbon.

    Biomass works if it's a waste stream that otherwise has to be dealt with. Sewage sludge, trash, corn cobs, rice hulls, sawmill offcuts and dust, etc. All of them could be converted to liquid fuels through direct hydrogenation, the Fischer-Tropsch process, or the Shell Methanol-to-Gasoline process.

  • @alanjewell9550
    @alanjewell9550 20 дней назад

    Unless biomass is very short carbon cycle - a few years max - as far as climate is concerned it's a carbon fossil fuel. It's carbon fixed at a point in the past. And unless replanted at at least the same rate, it's all greenwash. The other factor is that wood has a higher specific co2 emission per kilowatt-hour. It's about 0.42kg/kWh. By comparison, the coal it previously burnt from local collieries was about 0.28kg/kwh. Overall I suspect we'd have been better off environmentally by continuing to burn local coal & offsetting that with rewilding projects whilst we ramp up genuinely low carbon power systems. There's also the social dimension that we shut down our own pits & exported the jobs, which also meant less energy security due to dependency on other countries, shipping etc.

  • @curtisnixon5313
    @curtisnixon5313 20 дней назад

    Biomass = greenwashing. U.K. used to burn wood for fuel until all the trees in Britain were cut down, so then had to find a new fuel - coal. Now they want to go back to the future. Stoopid!

  • @nottelling41
    @nottelling41 20 дней назад

    Most UK electricity generation comes from natural gas which is methane which is the most expensive, is a much more powerful greenhouse gas and do hard to sow that we only have one week's storage. The UK has no sunshine in Winter when electricity usage peaks. Drax, dropped coal and solves green energy intermittentcy when President Putin is trying to strangle Europe and China is still building coal fired power stations. We need governments to be pragmatic and protective but individuals can still be free to show virtuous leadership. You didn't mention the enormous Canadian old forest wildfires which burned and produced more Carbon Dioxide than two years of Worldwide fossil fuel burning!

    • @nottelling41
      @nottelling41 20 дней назад

      How about white rot fungus and the end of the Carboniferous geological age? Have you noticed how thin the soil is in the Amazon forest? Fallen trees no longer become coal, they rot to methane or carbon dioxide now thanks to fungi

    • @MaxSafeheaD
      @MaxSafeheaD 19 дней назад

      what a muddle of nonsense this is. When methane is burned it forms carbon dioxide and water. The UK is outside the arctic circle meaning it has sinlight throught the winter. since 2022 UK imports no gas from Russia. International dependence on Russian gas is what gave Putin such control. UK refusal to regulate energy prices as many other countries did (France to 3%, then 9 months later to 15% for example) is why prices here have sky-rocketed allong with corporate profits. We also subsidise oil and gas to the tune of billions in tax exemptions. UK also has wind. Quite a lot of it infact. Canadian wildfire disasters do not reduce fossil fuel emissons. Chinese coal power plants do not reduce UK emissions. China has only just overtaken UK in historical emissions and their population is 20 times larger. Just don't even go there when it comes to moralising over China, Brits can say absolutley nothing.

    If you'd asked *any* decent engineer with a calculator in their hand they would have told you way back that biomass energy would never be 'green' or carbon neutral. So right now that same engineer would be telling you that nuclear is utterly unsustainable and damaging for the environment. In addition that engineer will tell you that outside of a very few edge cases, hydrogen as a fuel is plainly non-sensical.

    Great video, good discussion on why the sustainability of biomass is not necessarily a straightforward question. I find discussion on renewable energy is easily manipulated by bad faith actors who just want to smear all of it in favour of fossil fuels so this kind of balanced information is really valuable. Personally I would be a bit anxious about carbon capture and storage too - I've only ever heard of it being proposed by fossil fuel companies and then massively failing to deliver.

    Flywheels only make mild sense in zero G, and even that introduces some gyroscopic problems. This company is doomed, running off VC money, put in by people who don't understand what they are investing in. Magnets aren't free, degaussing is a long term problem. Also, 10kWh is pretty silly. That's $5k of LiFePo4 batteries with zero moving parts. I'd rather a shipping container sized nuclear reactor, preferably thorium based.
