Dial Up Modem Sounds After Connecting: V.FC
This is a companion to the first V.FC video: ruclips.net/video/cS7cR7XPc2E/видео.html
This time the audio continues after the connection is established, letting you hear what is going on once the speaker turns off.
What you hear is mostly just white noise. V.FC is a pretty typical case, as it sounds similar to most other modem standards after the connection is established.
However, some modem standards have much more interesting connection sounds afterward, such as Telebit PEP, and Courier HST. Check them out below!

Dial Up Modem Sounds After Connecting: Telebit PEP

@jrherita requested a recording of Courier HST, so here it is! USR introduced Courier HST (High Speed Transfer) in 1986. HST provided 9600 bps at a time when a fast common modem would be using V.22bis (2400bps). The standard was expanded twice: once in 1989, adding 14400bps and 16800bps, and again in 1992 to 21000bps and 24000bps. Presented here is an example of a connection at 16800bps, though...

Thanks to @FairPlay137 for suggesting an 'oddball connection standards' series! Here's V.32ter, though it doesn't really sound all that much different from plain old V.32. 56K Modems Aren't Always 56K
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.2 года назад
This is a quick explanation of why two analog 56K modems won't negotiate a 56K connection to one another, and why it's necessary for at least one of the modems to be digital in order to get a 56K connection. This is my first attempt at using After Effects, and a test for the more in-depth videos in the pipeline. As always, thanks for watching.

This is Audio Frequency Shift Keying and Bell 103.

    Most of us never really heard the 56k one because all the ISP's were using kflex and all of us were using X2...plus even if you weren't it would be a miracle if your line was clean enough for it to connect at full 56k.

I have still have a few of em in my collection including the special sysop deal where they sent me a HST Dual Standard 14.4k that is software upgradable to V.56K (took few years and several updates to get that point). Ran BBS with em in the 1980s and 1990s.

      @retrocet Месяц назад

      Done! I wasn't getting 21.6 from my gear for some reason, but 9.6 and 16.8 sounded the same, so I just uploaded 16.8: ruclips.net/video/itkYiepHEJY/видео.htmlsi=B_QOf-DIVgm5XDPE It's pretty short, but is actually more interesting after the speaker turns off, so I created another video that leaves the recording running after connecting here: ruclips.net/video/NwTigdJsMFs/видео.htmlsi=d8D8L10dIwCINQD3

      @@retrocet Awesome - thank you! I remember this quite well now running a BBS with USR Dual Standards - HST was very quick at negotiating connections. IIRC the first HST - 9600 baud had a 300 baud back channel, and ~16.8 and higher upgraded to 450 baud, which was just enough to made it usable for those programs that would let you chat while transferring files..

    • @jrherita
      @jrherita Месяц назад

      @@retrocet OK I was mistaken. HST topped out at 16.8 kbps. However USR could extend v32terbo to 21.6 kbps when connecting to another USR modem. (Terbo is normally limited to 19.2). ATS13=32 and ATS56=220 to do this.
