Flagstaff to Sedona MTB Trip with Hermosa Tours: Day 3 & 4
Because BABs Lacey and Rachel like to do hard things, we wanted to combine two days into one. We decided to bang out 50 miles to get to Sedona so we could get back on the road a bit early and add another day of mountain biking in Durango on the way home. Hindsight, we should have added an extra day in Sedona which we would highly recommend!
Day Three:
Most of the terrain is gentle in terms of elevation gain/loss, but a variety of soil conditions make for exciting riding. Sometimes you’ll be flowing along at high speed on soft tread, and other times you’ll be navigating over volcanic rock obstacles and climbing in your granny gear. It’s all fun, mostly rideable, and will leave you wanting mo...

Flagstaff to Sedona MTB Trip with Hermosa Tours: Day 2
Просмотров 5432 года назад
After two easy miles of riding, the AZT crosses the Rio de Flag and enters Picture Canyon. A short walk lead us to some spectacular petroglyphs that are a great reminder of the cultural history of this area. Pedaling southeast, the trail is fast and flat before it crosses under I-40 and soon enters Walnut Canyon. Here, the AZT stays just outside Walnut Canyon National Monument but still provide...
12 Hours of Royal Gorge Mountain Bike Race 2022

We came, we got stomach aches, we conquered in the 11th hour...well technically the 12th hour. BABs Lacey and Rachel were joined by BABs (Bad Ass Bros) Chris and Kansas for a 4-person team in the Royal Gorge 6 & 12-hour race. We somehow managed to rip out 12 laps on the 10-mile course that had over 1,000 ft of gain per lap. That was enough to land us on the top step of the podium.

BAB's Rachel and Lacey started off on the AZT from its intersection at FS 418 and rode about 25 miles to Little Elden Campground. The beginning of the ride brought them through fields full of massive aspens and vivid wildflowers. Shortly following that, they encountered about 5 to 6 miles of rocky, technical trail that was equally as hard as it was fun! They finished off the day by playing with...
BABs Part 2 Nordic Ski Weekend // Tennessee Pass Nordic Center & Cookhouse

Wow - took us a few months to get Part 2 up and edited. Sorry about that! Following Part 1 of our nordic weekend at Mt. Massive Nordic Center, we packed up and made our way to Tennessee Pass Nordic Center just in time to ski to our yurt! We did dinner at the Cookhouse (highly recommend), about a mile hike/ski/snowshoe from the Nordic Center and a half mile from our yurts where we stayed. The fo...

Ute'n Toot'n Trail Series started in Colorado Springs during COVID to be a self-guided race leveraging a strava route created by the organizers. Tatum talked a couple cyclists into it and we suffered along side friends who famously are included in the Incline-a-thon hall of fame (you must do the incline 500 times in 1 year to make the list!). The route was beautiful and a super fun 3000 ft of g...
Hiking Crystal Trail in Green Mountain Falls, CO // How did we mess that up so badly???
Просмотров 2742 года назад
It has been a while since the BAB's took on a local hike, so we started researching and came across this relatively short, but steep trail called Crystal Creek Reservoir Trail (All trails) or Crystal Trail (Hiking Project). What should have been a straightforward hike according to the route description, ended with us getting told by CDOT that we couldn't hike on pikes peak highway. Oopsies. Bec...

It's been nearly a year since the BABs dipped their toes, or rather their ski tips, into the snow. The snow came late this year, but the first chance we could get to nordic ski (which requires a bigger base than the alpine ski resorts) we booked a quick weekday trip to Snow Mountain Ranch aka YMCA of the Rockies. Snow Mountain Ranch is just 15 minutes up the road from Devil's Thumb Ranch outsid...

maybe learn how to skate BEFORE making videos about it
Me and a friend just did WRIAD CCW (Schafer climb last). Personally I found the road section from Schafer back to the lot one of the hardest sections. This time around I brought 4.5L of water with me, 3 on back, 1.5 in bottle cages, 7 Carbs gels (roughly 1per hour) and a handful of gummybears. We wrapped up the ride just under 8 hours and had about .5L left in one bottle. I think we lucked out with weather in low 60's and while climbing Schafer a cloud rolled in and sprinkled on us the whole way up. Was honestly quite nice. Anyways, we watched this video for beta before hand and wanted to say thanks!
That's impressive on the food and water intake. I would have bonked for suer on that :) Definitely lucked out on the weather! Appreciate the kind words!
How long did the experience take? You mentioned others, what was your favorite (and came with a guide...lol)
Royal Gorge Via Ferrata - I would budget 4 hours to do everything we did including riding the gondola, getting your gear, doing the practice route, and the main route, and taking our time. You can hire separate guides if they don't have one required like Telluride and Ouray. Telluride is my favorite! Least favorite is probably A-Basin (which also happens to be the most expensive).
Wow this ride looks awesome! I am planning to do a loop like this soon! Did you bike up Chalk Creek Drive - FS277 - Upper Brown's Creek?
Dang! That's a big ride. I've ridden up to do Jones and Lake Moraine trails, sometimes we go back down through Jack's and back to town, or Barr Trail to Inteman and back home. My biggest day on the peak was close to 50 miles and over 7000' of climbing. Neve done Almagre or Smokey City. The biting flies to get bad up there.
Great beta on this route. Thanks!
Did that over twenty five years ago, but ending in camp hale for a climb back into Leadville, brutal!
Awesome! What did you end up using to film the climb? Thanks for sharing!
My iPhone! If I recall - GoPros aren’t allowed.
@@BABsOutside got it! Thanks for your response!
Great 4 part series of Kokopelli’s! Camaraderie among you all inspiring. You all will be forever bonded. Did the ride many rears ago. Brought back many memories.
Was the "DED" (dead) a reference from Spawn the movie? Because i say that all the time. Lol
Is this a movie quote or something?
Fantastic video! I travel alone too and I agree that not having someone to share in the wonder is probably the main downside . Looking forward to being on this Trail soon! Thanks so much
I’ve been hiking in North Cheyenne Canyon since 1976 quite a few years ago I determined based upon the maps where smoky city mine Trail should be. When you go up pipeline, which is 668 you run into 701 which isForester’s Trail. If you then go north on Forsters the third stream that you come to is the stream where smoky city mine Trail hits 701. in the alternative you can go up 668 which is pipeline Trail and follow North Cheyenne Canyon Creek which means you get off the main trail and you follow the creek along the trail that will take you to 701. You will then be at the junction of 701 and Smoky city mine Trail. I’ve probably been to that spot seven or eight times in my life having hiked from the Powell parking lot above Helen Hunt Falls. I looked up the creek and for the life of me could not see a trail that I would construe to be a hiking trail. No one who I’ve spoken to among people who I’ve hiked with or people who I have seen on the trails has ever been on Smokey city mine Trail . My question to you young ladies is there a smoky city mine up there? Is there a mine at all that’s been closed is there a hole in the ground that was a mine? Why do they call it smoky city mine Trail? Do you have any idea as to What did they mine up there? Was it smoky quartz I wish you had stopped and videoed the mine. I assume there is a mind or what’s left of a mind. I have an arthritic knee for the last two years and to hike from Powell parking lot to the intersection of Smoky city mine Trail, and 701 and then return Will take all the energy out of me, especially since I would have to return I am sure going up that trail that you young ladies came down would be impossible for me to make the round-trip. I wish you had taken some photos with your GoPro or videos. If I were 10 years younger, I would try to do it, but I would have to get up awfully early in the morning. Being 78 1/2 years old that’s just not going to happen for me. If you find any other reference or know of any information about Smoky city mine please let me know because I’ve been searching for years, yours is the second video I’ve seen of people going down that trail. You’ve got some legs and some set of lungs. Keep it up.
Another great video from the BABs! Beautiful scenery! I did cliff jumping (and diving) in limestone quarries in Florida.
I need to comment. I really like these videos and so many things about them, the scenery, the adventure, the diversity of locales and activities, and the informative nature (e.g., maps, graphics, comment bubbles, etc). I'm a man, but it's great to see women do so much. In fact, I'm sharing them with my daughters to get them inspired.
So how was it? How long did it take you and how did you do with the water?
Watch our two part video on the ride and answer all the questions you might have on a WRIAD
@@BABsOutside oh awesome thanks! Just arrived to this one but didn’t look around for it
The best way I’ve done it that gave me the fastest time was to start just north of the park entrance on the green River side and ride clockwise. I stashed my Camelback and extra water at the top of the Schaeffer Trail switchbacks so that I wouldn’t have to carry it up from mineral bottom. Just a thought!
Hey thanks for posting! We are doing this trip in October! Looks so fun!
🤘🏻 🌟 🤘
Some scraggly rooock’cs ehh ? adventures are so fun and you clearly know how to adventure alright
One is true a person can not ever have enough bikes to drive and ride…..You literally passed the vehicle I was in at the beginning of the video right off of 24…… then rolling shanannaghans on Ol gold camp and thru the through the sister tunnels. Never seen that last trail until you met back up to the trail that goes down to the parking lot and you can smell sweat sweat BBQ
Can you do this on a gravel bike? I have both and I am moving to Pueblo at the end of the month. So I am really looking forward to the biking in a new location. Plus riding more in the winter months.
You can do the outside trails with a gravel bike but not the reservoir trails. Keep in mind the shale could slash your tires.
Nice video. Thanks for keeping the ambient audio so we can hear the trail noise.
And all the grunts ha
Did you guys let your garmin/wahoos run the whole time? Or did you record each lap as it own activity?
Some of us saved per lap as its own activity and turned off. Others kept it running and just turned it off between laps and turned on/resumed for the next laps. My personal preference is to save per lap as its own activity to more easily compare my lap times on strava. But if you want one giant ride in a 24 hour period for the record, then just save the laps and hit resume!
@@CyclingScoots awesome. Thanks. I’m riding the 12 hour as a duo next month.
@@stevec505 best of luck to you! It’s a fun race and great crew!
What kind of Bike Computer did you use to count your mileage?
Garmin and Wahoo!
Cool video! this was a stroll down memory lane for me. The first year that they were planning on doing the Rampart Ranger bike race I signed up but unfortunately I got canceled. I did ride this course a few times on my old surly cross check and it was a beating! I definitely wish I had a mountain bike for all that washboard.
Thanks! And yes a full suspension is nice on those washboards! Rode that ride a couple weeks ago on a gravel bike and washboards were a bit better than the later season when this video was shot.
Got my permit for tomorrow!
It’s beautiful up there! Be prepared for ALL THE MARMOTS. Snag red mountain too to get a high 100!
Great video ladies and nice job out there! See you at the 24 Hours of Old Pueblo 2024!
We love that race!
Is there any camping nearby?
Yep! At the Crags, Barr Camp (have to hike into that), or a few RV parks around the base. There’s also America’s highest KOA on the north side of the peak close to Deckers.
Thanks so much for doing a nice film about us. Your friends at Mount Massive Ski and Snowshoe Trails!
Can’t wait to go back!
Enjoy riding along on your adventures. Nice job on your content.
Appreciate that!
Love the 'realism' of this video!!! Have done it three times with vehicles/motorcycle....hope to do it on a bicycle in the next couple years. There is no place like Moab!!!!
Haha! We didn’t spare the parts where we suffered! Glad you enjoyed and have fun on the bike for round 3!
Excellent information!
Nice video but this music sounds like some drunk chick vomiting used condoms and tampons out of her mouth into an outhouse at a Burning Man or Electric Daisy festival...
Thanks for keeping the music to a minimum. I really like hearing you guys and the ambient sounds.
Great feedback - thanks!
Just did this over the weekend and the washboards beat me up! I was on a hardtail with suspension while my friend was on a gravel bike, felt bad for him. You mentioned that Spring might be a good time to avoid the washboards, do they usually maintain the road in Spring?
They usually grade it and moisture over the winter does the road some good. That one section of wash boards is pretty bad year-round when you’re in the open field.
@@BABsOutside Alright, thanks! Yea, the whole section between Rampart Reservoir and Mt. Herman Rd is rough right now. Maybe I'll give it another go in the Spring!
hahahha "child" 😂 I'm the child, thanks for the shoutout

I wonder what's up with that!? We appreciate you coming back but those dang notifications subs should work! We need more camping in our life!
Very helpful video, I soooo hope to climb these 14ers someday!
Glad you enjoyed it and hope you do too!
Here I was thinking Lead King Basin might be a good alternative to the long approach on the standard route. Not so sure after watching that. Looks loose and exposed.
If you have a car to get through Lead King that was the worst part. It is most definitely loose so you have to be careful but you can climb some of the ridge. We did that half way up and all the way down to avoid that scree. There was one move that I would say was closer to Class 4 that was pretty exposed, but otherwise, it felt safer than the loose dirt.
You mentioned a lot of issues with using your Go Pro, take a look at the Insta 360 One X2. This is what I will be using as it has voice commands for filming as well as 360 views, it's like having 10 cameras with you as you can choose in the easy editing software what angle to look at. Happy Trails!
Good to know and thanks for the rec!
G'day from Australia, thanks for the video, I'll be there this year in 2022 and attempting WRT in one day on October the 5th and am a below-knee amputee. Good to see what I am in for and the tips with water and food, still not sure which way round yet. How's the weather at the start of October? Also, how was your bike comfort on the bike seat, did you wear a bib and brace with chamois and use any particular chafing creams? Thanks again for making this video.
October is likely pleasant but the water will be low for sure if you do decide to filter. Everything hurt but we all wore chamois. None of used any cream but probably should have! Thanks for watching and glad it helped!
Finally a great video on the parts that matter. Been on Challenger last two years but had no Go Pro. Didn't camp at Willow but, as you know, that Alpine lake was amazing and was a much needed resting area after the hike to get there. Thank you for this Video. Much appreciated!
Hah yep! It’s easy for the lake to be the center of attention! Hope you sneak over to KC if you haven’t had a chance to do that yet.
