Suzuki DRZ400 - Skid Plate Upgrade
In this video I install a upgraded skid plate to the Suzuki DRZ400 that I purchased from T-Rex Racing. This skid plate is a major improvement over the factory skid plate. It's a very easy install that only requires removing and installing just a few bolts. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to install. Hope you enjoy.

Skid plate is a must if you’re going to do a lot of offroad riding. 👍👍
@@northbysoutheast5439 yup and that is the plan!
Looks like a really nice piece. I was looking at different skid plates and crash protection. I'm going to add these to my wish list.
I think you'll like em. They also shipped out pretty quickly. The lower crash bar mounts through the skid plate you the frame bolt hole there on the side.
Great video as usual 👍. I’m digging that bash /skid plate. I’m interested in hearing more about that additional kick stand idea. That bike is coming together nicely.
@@TommyWasHere thank you Tommy. I can't wait to get everything I wanna do done but then again, I guess it's never done.
Well explained 👏
Thank you ma'am.
Good video Carson! Well done with the lighting!!
Thank you Patrick. Its one of the most aggravating things about doing mechanical work is trying to make sure the camera picks up enough light to see what I'm talking about... especially on the bottom of the bike
@ that’s why I made that comment, because I know it is!
1:44 that looks like a giant skid plate….
It is, might add a little bit of weight but the protection is well worth it
@ I know it will be! I hit my skid plate a ton on the SM1000
5 ft/lbs ain't much. Keep an eye on thos bolts. I lost 2 on my Honda. That looks like a big ol plate. I really like how much if the rear linkage it covers. Thah is a serious skid pad.
I agree with you. Probably why they recommend medium grade loctite. I will say after taking a peak at installing the crash bars, It's not going to be as easy as I was saying/thinking in the video to get the skid plate off. The lower Crash Bar mounts go through the skid plate to mount on the frame... OOPS. I might end up putting some loctite on there after all.
Yep, that sure does look like it's well made, a lot better than what was on there.
I agree with you. Totally worth the upgrade.
That skid plate will sure come in handy for log crossings on the trail. That long, slick bottom will slide right over a lot of stuff, with a little momentum. Who knows?? Maybe you can get a long running start and she'll skip across water like a flat rock! Be sure to video any water walking attempts :) :)
😂😂 The ole redneck... "hey, ya'll watch this" 😂😂
@@theadventurousrider Famous last words! :)
Serious skid plate for sure looks good 👍
I agree.. I really like how it looks. Going to be look even better i think after the crash bars are on there.
Those are nice bikes. But you’re right when you say the seats are hard and to skinny.
@@northbysoutheast5439 it seems to be a very popular consensus! Thanks for watching
The drz is a great dual purpose motorcycle. Of course , the road guys will say it sucks on the street and enduro guys will say it sucks off-road. But ,that is the nature of a dual purpose motorcycle , and the DRZ is very capable in both genres
@@mikeandrews1899 I agree. I was looking for something that will do interstate speeds(it will do it you just sacrifice MPG) but also able to do the small trails. So far really liking it
The DRz is a highly capable machine. I bought mine to try out light ADV riding. As it turns out here in the Northeast there seems to be a lot of distance to decent ADV riding areas and I didn't care for riding a small bike a lot of miles on the road. To be honest, once I got to dirt roads I found them kind of boring. So, I ended up converting my DRz for hard trail use and using it like an enduro... Outside of weight, the DRz blew mind, the bike can get it done off road and its hard to break. I'm back on a 2stroke enduro, because its the right bike for what and the way I ride, but the DRz did the job all summer, I have a set of black Rox Racing 7/8"-7/8" bar risers for the DRz as well as some other items for the bike. If you're interested get my # from Pat(Motoramblings) and I'll make you a deal 😉
I have the same probably here where i'm from in MS. I've gotta go 60 or so miles to get to any dirt trails as most of the roads they have paved here or they are blocked off due to hunting leases. I so wish you could have a 4-stroke sound like a 2-stroke. I just love those 2-stroke sounds. I definitely will get it from him here in the next few days.
@@theadventurousrider My DRz came with an MRD Z-Pro exhaust. Amazing sound, but it was crazy loud, I had to get the "quiet" baffle for it. If I ever get back into ADV riding it'll be on a bigger bike, for sure
@@painsrides I'm pretty sure I'm going to be going with the Yoshi one most people go with. With the bike being black, I'm going with their black carbon fiber one
@@theadventurousrider Open the airbox and get a re-jet kit once you have a new exhaust on(3x3 mod). There's untapped power, plus the engine will run better & safer not being choked up.
Crazy how much power it supposedly opens up when you do all 3 of them. But that's emissions for you.
Im thinking about a lighter bike than my 790 adventure for playing around on. Crf300l, klx 300 or new Drz with fuel injection. I looked at the dr650 but its almost 50lbs heavier than klx300.
@@jimh2061 I was looking at the same thing when I was looking for this bike, weight. I think the non rally crf300l is slightly lighter than the current drz. The fuel injected drz is rumored to be about 20lbs heavier than the current one but that's only like 350lbs.
Dude, you just nailed it! It's exactly what a Step-by-step video should it look like, graphic and clear, really outstanding, Kudos! BTW, congrats also for the bike.
Thank you . I try to do them as if i'm trying to learn how to do it myself from watching one of these.
Seat Concepts Comfort is my recommendation. The Comfort XL is too wide for me.
@@DualSportDoug everyone seems to point to the same seat. I'm going to have to compare the XL to the non and also to my current AT seat. I've put a many miles on the AT seat
DRZs are awesome. I have 18 years of experience with one. I've got almost 22k miles on mine..
@@DualSportDoug nice. I have heard that they are pretty reliable bikes if you keep up with the maintenance. So far I'm liking it
Cool, looks like you're getting pretty comfortable on it. New seat and some risers will probably make a good difference in comfort.
I am.. I already knew about the seat I just hadn't wanted to spend the money yet. Kind of hoping I could put up with it till I had some other mods done. Someone commented on here made a good bit of sense to get the seat before messing with the handlebars as the seat may change things
Let’s plan a ride soon!!
Yes we do! I'll get with you.
Good deal on finally getting everything sorted so that you can take her out and enjoy it. Do yourself a favor and get your seat sorted before you change bars, since you will probably sit in a different spot, both from a higher or lower seat, as well as sinking into a softer seat foam. The three points of contact between you and your scoot make a HUGE difference in how much you enjoy the ride. Wide, grabby pegs, a soft place to sit while on the road (maybe a seat pad for gettin' there and the stock seat or something with a similar profile for off road, and FAT grips to kill arm pump. Honda bend bars are my favorite offroad. If you don't like the height of the Africa Twin bars, but they put your hands in a good place, you can try varying thickness spacers under the risers until you see how tall seems best, then you will know the bend bar that fits you and find one with the added height that you need. I would have matching bar bends between the two bikes to feel more at home no matter which one you're riding. As far as turning around in a tight spot, it looks like you already have a good start. Just give her the power and feather the clutch, and don't be shy with it. Harder surfaces with loose tops are easiest, but deep sand cushions any mistakes. Just be aggressive with it, and look where you wanna end up and not down at the front wheel and you'll be slidin' sideways to a stop with your feet on the pegs, throwin' that inside leg out, and turning around in one lane's width of the trail before you know it!
Getting the seat before the handlebar is something I hadn't about till you mentioned that. Thank you for help me determine the order of buying that as that makes perfect sense. Funny thing is of course when i turned the camera on I couldn't get it to spin around quite as easy as I was when I was just getting the camera. Oh well need to keep working on it.
@@theadventurousrider Spinning around like that is just about the coolest thing ever, and it never grows old! :)
I don't think it will either.
Keep on Keeping on
Thank you Ms. Nancy. Hope all is well and everyone is down there for Thanksgiving!
Glad you finally got things sorted so you can ride. Now we want ALLLLLLLL the content!

Great Video. You always do such a great job. That bike looks brand new Man thanks so very much for the shout out to my channel. I’m looking forward to riding that bike after you change the seat 😆. Be Particular, Tommy Slick Adventures
Hahaha.. yea I have one I'm looking at just not wanting to spend the money yet!
You're gonna love the Zed! One of the first mods I did was seat. It came in handy on my 1k moto-camping loop.
Seems to be a common theme as a first mod..lol.. nice curious to see how it does when I get to do some of those
Ya. Those seats are terrible. Lots of handlebar options to upgrade to and if you add heated grips, they are usually a little bigger as well. Good to see you put on the DRZ! Nice easy day, but look forward to seeing more.
I haven't looked at the heated grips yet so thanks for the information. I have looked at the actual handle bars and trying to decide if I want to one with the thin top bar or not. Kind of a in the way right now with the cramped space I have up there
@@theadventurousrider it's hard to say. The crossbar can be a nice place to mount some accessories.
@@DeweyRides agreed
Ride the sportster.
