    I honestly came here hoping to find a way to defend the buckthorn in my yard, as I like how it grows fast enough to harvest its branches for my own crafts. But hearing about that emodin, I think I finally understand why my large maple appears to have a part that's dying. Think I could just uproot all my buckthorn and grow it in my basement? Ahhh, why'd I have to get attached before learning it's invasive!

They are very painful 😖 My large trees maples, oaks, have not had a problem. I also have no rodent problems ! Im not convinced this buckthorn is as bad as this video claims. This so called evil plant keeps my property safe from trespassers and unwanted rodents 🐀 🐰 THANK YOU BUCKYHORN

    One tip more: cheap binoculars do not work!! Since childhood i thought that I was unable to use binoculars, was never been able to focus and see clearly with both eyes, yet a pair of new expensive 8x32 was a revelation, totally clear and wide field of beauty!! I was wrong all these years because old, cheap binoculars have small differences for right and left eye and only high-quality binoculars are aligned, giving that magic of blending in both eyes to the same image!! Luckily now it is possible to get good binoculars for less that $200 like svbony or vortex, for birding i found that the best are 8x32mm as 25mm are too dark, while 42mm are too heavy if you want to hold them steady for longer time, absolutely maximum weight is one pound and minimum 4mm opening Thank you for the lesson, especially the way to adjust the diopter and keeping the head and gaze still when lifting the binoculars, this i need to tell everyone i bird with :) A good 8x32 revealed more details on birds than any amount of zoom i tried on my old Nikon 8x-24x 25mm superzoom - i always thought the Nikons were good and my eyes build wrong, as i could only see clearly with one eye, and more than 10x gets shaky, which i now know is true for any pair of binoculars

    bs"d Thank you - what's great is you also mention a positive use for the brush that is cut away! Info from the free encyclopedia: Emodin is part of the anthraquinone familiy of chemicals (6-methyl-1,3,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone) and it can actually combat SARS-CoV2 & other coronaviruses. 'It has various actions including laxative, antibacterial, and antiinflammatory effects, and has also been identified as having potential antiviral activity against coronaviruses....being one of the major active components of the antviral TCM formulation Lianhua Qingwen...inhibition mechanism on the formation of the Spike-ACE2 protein complex... dose-dependent inhibition in the prevention of infection by the SARS-Cov-1 whose evidence has stimulated further investigations on SARS-Cov-2... shown to inhibit the ion channel of protein 3a which could play a crucial role in the virus from infected cells.' So, the chemical imitation of it has probably already been used to combat CV19. But for us gardeners, it can be problematic. If taking it out, especially if touching the juices in the cambium and xylem and phloem, one must wear gloves and/or wash hands Very Well before preparing any food. Not only can it cause severe diarrhea, it can cause vomiting for someone who has a sensitive system, and for someone who already has a sensitive bowel (like if they had a big inguinal hernia for 25 years & did not get it fixed, and the weight of that is already causing likelihood of perforated bowel) the vomiting can cause perforated bowel, which is deadly because it can cause fatal sepsis without medical intervention. What belongs in the bowels gets into the blood stream and then it's good bye and crying time, if medical help cannot be found. So, definitely one must understand that the wood itself is toxic. Whatever it is about the emodin that could be curative is poisonous when gotten in the wrong way! It used to be used for a laxative for children in the 1500's, but then was removed from the medical plant lists because it was too extreme. Also the berries have been known to cause paralysis if ingested by smaller humans. So, it's not just a matter of having a bad case of diarrhea and vomiting if someone ingests it. Ingesting berries has been seen to be fatal for small birds & small animals, so I'd hope no cute puppies or kittens would eat those berries, either. I personally see this as a national crisis, as 36 states of the Union have this plant. MN is having a terrible time getting rid of it, for many reasons. I live further west and a bit south from MN, and do a lot of walking in my home town, with about an 8-mile radius from home. There is no place I have walked where these bushes are not common. It seems the City even chooses to plant and groom them on parkways. I think it bodes ill for us, but am not sure to whom to talk, about it. So, with every other enemy we have, now, I think, there is another one. Buckthorn. If using it for carving, one must be aware that it can cause skin to become itchy. Definitely one would not use it for wooden bowls & plates! (Probably the microwave drying method is getting rid of that toxic juice but I would not want to take chances.) Yew is much worse. Regarding that, I read a story about someone who was served a meal in a yew bowl, and he did not live for many hours after that. So, this is toxic, but probably not as much as yew. So if eating from a wooden bowl, know of what wood it was made! And anyone who makes wooden bowls, please be nice about what you make them out of! And, there is a legend that the Crown of Thorns was made from Buckthorn. It makes sense, as this species inhabited both Europe and Northern Africa long ago, hence would have been in the Holy Land too. We don't need it in America! However, I have found it useful for walking sticks, and, if dried up long enough, it is not causing skin to itch when used that way. Thanks for a friendly and comprehensive discussion of this invader. Bring on the goats!

    Thank you for such a comprehensive video addressing buckthorn eradication. We are about three years in our house on a rural 1 acre lot that slopes down to a watershed creek behind our property. It was Nov/Dec when we offered and the seller mentioned that there was *some* buckthorn out back...🙄😬. I am big on research so learned pretty quickly to not go chopping it down all willy-nilly unless I wanted removing buckthorn to be my new hobby. Once our first spring/summer/fall was behind us, it is clear that invasive are the rule rather than the exception and we have vast amounts of canary reed grass (some wet prairie area), honeysuckle, Virginia creeper, poison oak, and poison ivy in addition to the buckthorn. Add in the standing-dead (ash, mostly) and it's hard to not get discouraged but I AM going to defeat them and reclaim our patch of paradise. I, too, am aiming to establish an understory that blends edible permaculture with ferns, etc. and wondering how to plan and execute. Do you have a video that addresses how best to tackle "what's next" after the riff-raff is gone? I am currently waiting for delivery of my newest toy...a Pullerbear christened "Kathy's Buckthorn Buster" and plan to spend the summer before I coast into my 69th b-day slaying the buckthorn beasts. I.Can't.Wait. 😁

I have paid money to buy buckthorn berries for it's medicinal purposes. They are so hard to find. Thank you for your video though. Other uses are : Taken hot, it induces perspiration and lowers fever. Small doses are mild laxative, helps eliminate toxins, treat gallstones, lead poisoning, gout, rheumatism, dropsy, ointment relieves itching, reduces fever if given hot, expels parasites and worms, skin diseases. The ointment is effective for treating warts.

    Palmitoleic acid, along with other fatty acids, can help to lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and improve overall cardiac function. Support Cancer Therapy Clinical studies have shown some support for using sea buckthorn oils and juices in cancer therapy. Several flavonoids in sea buckthorn, especially quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin, create cytotoxic responses with cancer cells and help to stop them from multiplying. Improve Skin Health Sea buckthorn is widely used in skin and hair products due to the rich array of vitamins and fatty acids it contains. Apart from vitamins C, A, and E, the oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that helps blood circulation and reduces signs of aging. Sea buckthorn oil also contains plant sterols like beta-sitosterol and campesterol that add hydration, smooth skin texture, and boost skin elasticity. Disease Prevention Sea buckthorn contains antioxidants which help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. This damage can lead to serious diseases such as cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. Eating antioxidants can help reduce your risk of potentially life threatening diseases.❤

    Well, are you sure berries can't be eaten? Maybe, just maybe these are the healthiest berries on the planet. Maybe, it needs to be figured out, if cooking them would get rid of laxative effect. Maybe, they are just like elderberries. Maybe they are cancer fighting berries. Maybe some people in Himalayas live on average 20-30 years longer then rest of the world because they eat them on daily basis. Maybe, just maybe.

    This may not be your thing, but... Buckthorn makes a superior grade of charcoal for use in gunpowder and pyrotechnics. Finding someone to remove the larger sections cut down in your cleanups might be easier if you know this, because it can point you in the right direction of who might be interested in helping you. Try contacting a longrifle shooting club or mountain man reenactors group in your area to see if any of their members would be interested. There are likely several people in any given are who manufacture their own powder.

They do not want to spend the money to hire someone to pull the shrubs. Herbicide isn't an option because they are within 10 feet of a pond. I feel so alone in this battle. Ug.

    • @EcoElsa
      @EcoElsa 2 года назад

      It is common to have push back on removing plants that make great privacy screens and that people mistake as being beneficial because they grow so thick. In addition to killing plants around it by putting emodin into the soil Buckthorn has also been linked in studies to attracting other things like aphids and crown root fungus that can cause damage to other plants in the area. As well as negatively impacting reproduction in amphibians and native insects with the emodin it releases. This all can add up to other more costly problems over time like losing trees, plants, and having an increase in pest species likes mosquitoes and other pest insects. I would attempt to start there and follow with it is cheaper to remove it now than later when it spreads further and will cost even more or the trees are all so mature you would have to do stump removal too to keep it nice to HOA standards. Good luck!
