    so what the difference when i use standar and slog ? if the output same rec 709

    • @raymond_phan
      @raymond_phan 2 месяца назад

      If you're talking about Standard vs S-Log picture profiles, S-Log generally flattens the image (pulls highlights down and shadows up) while Standard bakes in the highlights and shadows at a default contrast setting. Using S-Log2 with it's standard color mode, S-Gamut, on the A7iii (only has 8-bit color) means that the colors essentially get desaturated and have to be pulled back to Rec709 when it comes time to color correct. The 8-bit color doesn't record enough information so we end up with a lot of color noise and artifacts in the conversion from S-Gamut to Rec709. Here, we are changing the color mode that we're using with S-Log2. So, essentially with S-Log2 + ITU709 matrix we're getting Rec709 colors but with the highlights and shadows being pulled in so that they're not clipping out the gate. Then we just adjust highlights and shadows to our liking, and touch color less in color grading. This way we get less noise and color artifacts in our image. Maybe I'm not great at color grading but to my understanding, ANY 8-bit color footage breaks pretty easily if you're going for some crazy color shifts... so this method still can't really fix that issue unfortunately.

    How do you color the ITU709 Matrix? Can you add a rec709 lut?

    • @raymond_phan
      @raymond_phan 11 месяцев назад

      I don't personally use LUTs, but yes in theory, after correcting contrast/exposure, you should be able to add a rec709 LUT to the footage as long as the LUT isn't a conversion LUT

  • @MerveDemirci
    @MerveDemirci Год назад

    Hi urgent help please, today I watched your video and did the settings like you advices for SLOG3 + ITU709 MATRIX. Need LUT for ,t because it seems too saturated and weird when I try to add sony official luts.. :((((( And I just read people strongly say DO NOT USE anything except Cine Gamut :(((( Are you really sure about the ITU709 MATRIX ??? How can I balance it.. Please help..

    • @raymond_phan
      @raymond_phan Год назад

      Here I am using Slog2 not Slog3, and with this method of using ITU709 Matrix, you DO NOT use LUTs with it at all. In editing, you just adjust exposure to get the right contrast. The reason your image is too saturated is because ITU709 Matrix already has rec709 color baked into the footage, so applying an Slog LUT will just double on the color. So, IF you want to use the ITU709 matrix, you do NOT use any LUT. Hope that is clear :))

    can you share your conversation lut from slog 2 to rec 709?

    • @raymond_phan
      @raymond_phan Год назад

      if using s-gamut, the conversion lut I used for s-log2 was downloaded from the official Sony website (just google it) BUT if using the ITU709 Matrix method, like I decided to do, you don’t need a conversion lut, you just tweak your exposure and contrast since it is already in rec709 color

    Hi and thanks for this. I hadn't realised that you didn't need a correction LUT for this. My problem now is that my favourite Phantom LUTs expect an S-LOG2 + S-GAMUT input, because they add both a transform and style in the same LUT (I think).

      @@raymond_phan It's down to Caleb Pike (I did his training) and now your video above, which suggests that the Sony S-GAMUT for these cameras introduces colour shifts and artefacts.
