The modern man tends to want to shy away from the idea of punishment. But we should not let our compassion blind us to the idea of justice. There are laws to protect society and its inhabitants. When one acts in defiance of the law he rightly deserves to have an appropriate degree of suffering revisited back to him. Just as a hard worker deserves and rightly should be rewarded by his superior, the law breaker rightly deserves to be punished for his actions. Rehabilitation and deterrence are just as important and play their roll, often this occurs without effort, naturally.
