So, I decided to go ahead and check this out because this was recommended to me last night and I thought it would be interesting watching this firsthand to develop my thoughts as I speak. I’m completely neutral to you overall, and I believe you have both your good and bad moments, but at the same time, I genuinely think that anyone interested in becoming and FRB creator can become a good one and benefit from some constructive criticism. So, here I am to share you my review on this battle. This matchup has potential to become extraordinary; let’s see if it excels in its execution. Sayori begins by correcting the announcer with the pronunciation of her name, which is reminiscent of the opening couplet of Doc Brown vs. Doctor Who by ERB. While a proper diss to/acknowledgement of Kaede would be better, it’s not the end of the world and a diss may seem a bit out-of-character for her early on (though Sayori vs. Sayaka Miki by SIR Rap Battles does have Sayori diss her opponent as early as the second line, so technically it’s feasible, so long as the diss is worded the right way). Afterwards, we get a few lines that aren’t noteworthy (although someone should’ve told the writers that “confess” and “with” don’t rhyme) until our first Don DeMarco comes in the fourth couplet. Sayori gets a point by the halfway point of her first verse. After that, she brings up how unlike Kaede, she doesn’t kill others and believes that it’s straight-up unjust. While roughly on the same point as the previous diss, it’s different enough for me to consider it a separate Don DeMarco. Afterwards comes a diss that touches on something a bit different: Kaede being potentially found out about killing another student should that happen, meaning her life is at stake as a result. The Among Us reference felt forced, but the eleventh line alone is yet another Donnie. I don’t fully get the next diss, but I’m gonna go ahead and also give a point to Sayori given how someone in the comments reacted to it. The final couplet is also something I don’t fully get, and I may give Sayori another point for it, assuming a later line connects with it. In the end, this verse might’ve been better-written with less filler, but it could be a lot worse, as we’ll see in the next verse. Kaede begins with a line that isn’t bad in itself, but does make question two things: Why does she still have offbeat performances at points and why is there no piano? If she brings up her title and we later see a VR chat scene of her playing said instrument, shouldn’t it be logical to incorporate a piano in the instrumental. The most likely answer is that the making of this battle wasn’t fully thought out, but I honestly think that the battle would be better without these cons. And then…we get an unnecessary acknowledgment of Sayori’s parents that does nothing and Kaede rudely telling Sayori to cope with her depression. By this point, we’re getting to why this verse sucks. I’m very sure the writers didn’t consider if most of the lines here could realistically come from Kaede, and this already shows the out-of-character moments for her in this battle. Our first true Donnie comes next, though the “so boring” part of said line could be replaced. The next line, once again, could be worded better, but still hits somewhat. Then we get what sounds like an offbeat performance before we get to a line that kind of disappoints me despite what the second half was referencing. It does however seem to connect to Sayori’s last line of round one, though. Moving on, we get a Freshy Kanal reference that appears shoehorned and as a result is filler. I want to remind you to have more effective communication and realize parts in the writing that can be improved sooner, as I’m sure if you had both, then not only would the writing be better, but because a risk comes if you get other people to write for battles. These other writers could be amateurs and not realize their mistakes without input from others on what could be bettered. Also, this is yet another moment where Kaede is out-of-character. The twelfth line attempts to fix things up, and I suppose it does, but the negatives outweigh the positives. Then we get rushed enunciation and Kaede yet again making fun of Sayori’s depression (the writers should’ve looked at what the aforementioned Sayori vs. Sayaka Miki did in regards to disses to Sayori), before ending it with a couplet at least better than most of the others in this verse. In the end, this verse could’ve been much better-written and the pros outweigh the cons. Sayori’s second verse is easily the best, and begins with hit after hit. I can already tell that the writing stepped up by a lot and we get five Don DeMarco’s in a row (even if the final two are a bit flawed, though their points still get across). The closer was also powerful, and a great way to close the best verse in this battle. Kaede’s final verse has her questioning what’s going on in front of her, and this is already a good start that hopefully leads to a better verse. Then Kaede’s execution is shown on-screen as she bring up another Don DoMarco in the fifth and sixth lines, and it’s a good juxtaposition that redeems her performance a bit. This final couplet consists of two good disses that help elevate the battle and make this verse miles better than Kaede’s first. Overall scoreboard: Sayori: 11 Don DeMarco’s Kaede Akamatsu: 7 Don DeMarco’s In the end, I have mixed opinions on this battle and think it could’ve been much better, but the second verses for each were both good. This is a win for Sayori in the end, both because she had a less-flawed performance but also because of her killer second verse. In the end, I hope you appreciate my review and the constructive criticism I put in it if you want to become a better rap battle creator.
