Julius Wilhelm August Rietz (1812-1877) was a German composer, conductor, cellist and teacher. He composed his first symphony in 1843 while music director in Dusseldorf. The premiere took place in Leipzig, 1844, under the composer's baton. It was performed several times during the 19th century, but was then forgotten.
