Took Misty and C3 up to F70 (French Vally( for some breakfast in the Cessna 182. It also gave me a chance to try out my new GoPro mount. This flight and video come with a surprise ending. We are working on him diving out because right now he has figured out how to jump in and bounce off the bottom which is not a good habit.

Been to the tunnel 3 times and passed Level 1 on my third visit. Was able to fly around the tunnel on my own. Been getting asked a lot "so, when are you gonna jump from a perfectly good airplane?" So I've been thinking about pursuing my A-License this Summer. Started going to iFly with absolutely no interest in sky diving, but now I feel like I need to do this. Yes, the iFly staff are kind of eggin' me on too. I feel like I need to learn sky diving to help improve my tunnel flight and play in the tunnel to help improve sky diving. I kinda want to alternate doing either one. Maybe get some 10 minute block time the day before doing an AFF course. We shall see. Most people I've talked to have been very supportive. There is a select few, I mean VERY select few, who think this is a stupid idea. They just need to educate themselves and understand that this is much, MUCH safer than the drive to the drop-zone itself.
@@kcg795 good luck with your jumps and tunnel time. The naysayers are going to be there no matter what. Just be safe and enjoy your time either in the tunnel or in freefall.
I’m going for my first jump soon in 12 years & only done 2 other tandems but yeah all I’m doing is watching skydiving videos cause I want to get my license

How long did it take you to engage your legs more? I have comparatively very little tunnel time prior to AFF but every jump it seems like i get the "use more legs" sign. And the strict 90° elbows and shoulders flying the AFFI wants just doesn't seem as stable. I'm only at C2 at this point but I'd really like to get my license before the season here in SC is over.
@@cwsspot By the third jump, I was super aware of my legs. I struggled in the very beginning because instinctively, due to the increase speed of freefall. I had the muscle memory to get small when in reality I need to put more legs out there.
@carnellc I'll see if I can keep up. I'm going on jump 4 next. The third jump I was a bit more with it. Hopefully, there will be no sideways peace signs next jump.🫠 Would've happened today but the DZ is without power due to the hurricane. Thanks for the response, and good luck on your future endeavors.

Great video I really loved it especially because I am practically in the same position. I am an experienced tunnel flyer but have only ever done one tandem jump. I intend to pass my AFF soon. If you see this (I know the video is from 2 years ago) do you have any tips?
@@arthurliesedessaigne1334 My best advice is to make good connections with the DZ that you are going to do your AFF at. This helped me huge as most of the instructors were aware of my tunnel history so they knew how to best instruct me. That’s why I was able to combine several steps in one jump! Hope this helps and good luck with your AFF

Easier in a couple ways, my fear factor was a lot less knowing that I was already flying a stable body position in the tunnel and two it allowed me to fast track through a lot of the different stages because of my tunnel time

Quality jumps - other than your shirt coming out and blowing over your handles in FF I'd have been more than proud to do that well on my AFF jumps.

Amazing. How many hours of tunnel time do you think you had prior to entering AFF? How long did it take you to be decently proficient in the tunnel?
I had around 7 or so hours in the tunnel prior to AFF. I picked up belly flying quickly, back and sit fly took a while before I felt comfortable. Post AFF, I spent 5 hrs learning head down.

I spent 10 years Jumping and later became a scuba Instructor used to freak people out with my fast arched descents Jumpings a long way down scuba is a long way up.

Thanks, I was looking for this video! Question: Im going on a AFF+A-Licence 2 weeks holiday next summer. What amount of tunnel time gives me the most advantage for making the most progress out of the 2 weeks? It is including 25jumps but I can book extra jumps after that. I want to push it as far and save as possible :) Zero skydive experience but many hours paramotor and paragliding experience. I dont know if that's a benefit.
If you can book (and afford) 5 hrs, I think that would be huge for your learning. Keep in mind, my first time in the tunnel I only booked 20 minutes and by the end of that, I was hands off and somewhat stable (and most people are). So just getting a few hours before you start AFF would set you up real nice. Good luck friend and blue skies!!

Just remember to keep checking your altimeter and do your safety checks! But the most important thing is DONT FORGET TO PUT YOUR PARACHUTE ON before you jump! Important things for a tunnel rat! 😊 Nothing beats the view from 14k feet! AND you have just “a tad” more room to maneuver! 😊 And with that tunnel experience it will be a lot easier for you to control your body and speed! Enjoy the rush my friend!

Our DZ requires two tandem jumps prior to starting AFF. For me, they made an exception so I only had to do one tandem (after ground school) before I started AFF

I've seen tons of places in EU and other spots around the world that don't require Tandem and I'm wondering why it's so prevalent in the US. :/ Part of me wants to get my biz dialed (in tunnel) Take the ground school, and do my first jump with 2 instructors. I've watched enough AFF vids to know you never can tell who is going to nut up really. Anyhoo, thanks for the response!
I came up under static-line progression and surplus military rounds. You needed 35 jumps to fly a PC 😂 Lotsa stories, lotsa hard landings. I was probably the last guy in Cali to land a 26' LoPo reserve. First squares were line-reefed, no slider. One of the sky-gods was killed under one at our DZ. Don't have to tell anybody; wind-tunnels and AFF are waay better...

@@BWS952 jump 100 was quite as I was jumping in FL at that time. My last jump was last year at 114. I hit low level wind-shear when landing and I shattered both ankles to include a ugly compound fracture. I’ve spent the last year learning to walk again and left me with a ton of new hardware.
@@carnellc man so sorry that happened. Was that just bad luck or were there other factors (you were swooping for example)?
@@BWS952 bad luck. I was the first one down on that load and the weather/winds changed. Everyone slid it in, I took the worst of it. I hit the wind shear at about 15 feet. Didn’t have time to react quick enough. I was the first of several big injuries that season due to the crazy winds.
This is a stunningly beautiful video story of your training in Utah --- music choices were top shelf; photography work was A-plus. The wind tunnel technology (e.g. iFLY) for "human bodyflight" might be the greatest advance for the sport of skydiving since the invention of the three-ring release and the advent of modern ram-air canopy designs. I totally agree that work in a tunnel with a good instructor (who is also an experienced skydiver) at the "front end" can (1) Build much confidence and (2) Improve student performances in the early AFF category steps when getting relaxed stability during freefall seems an insurmountable barrier to progress. My AFF "journey" was atypical: Long and with multiple gaps due to some health issues, two of which were life-threatening and required urgent surgery. When I did finally heal up and "come back" to get my A-license, I had accumulated about 25 hours in the tunnel, all with an amazing tunnel coach who is AFF-rated and without doubt an elite teacher in both the tunnel and in the sky. One fly in the ointment: Tunnel flying is so darned expensive that requiring a minimum amount of it as a prerequisite for entering AFF training will never become standard practice, although the cost of doing 15 minutes in the tunnel with a coach (in my city at least) is actually almost the same as the cost of repeating any AFF level that involves two instructors flying with the student. I think in retrospect that a smart strategy would be that every Newbie, with few exceptions, completes her/his First Jump, then does about 15 minutes in the tunnel before rejoining the AFF curriculum.

Awesome. I have a B license and 115 jumps, I think I haven't gotten the stability you have on your first jump.
Prior to that jump, I had about 5 to 6 hours in the tunnel already so for me, it was second nature to be that stable.
I am going to be doing ground school and hopefully get my A license next spring. Ive been tandem twice and fell in love. I am by iFly and will be going to the same DZ. Planning on doing some iFly during the winter, this video was awesome! Thanks for the inspiration.

@@bradenrypien882 That's like a million dollars. Whew. My wife and I did about 6 mins between both of us I think I did 4 she did 2... Loved it but holy shizzle it was expensiveizzle. :) We are about 1.5 hours away from the iFly as well so... yeah :/ Butw e're def going back. My plan was to try and get 30mins to an hour of time, learn all of the AFF moves if possible prior to doing AFF. Anyhoo. It was smooth watching dude basically nail everything. I've watched way too many AFF's lol
Enjoyed this video, I had around 7hrs in the tunnel prior to aff. My (tunnel)instructor was a skydiver. Did the course in 3 jumps. So I spend about 7k to save 900ish lol At jump 85 and fall in love with the sport more every time I go. Totally in love with the tunnel also tho🎉🎉 Rock on!

Idk where this was but it looks like a MUCH better experience than I had at skydive Spaceland Dallas. If you go there, avoid brian unless you want to be paralyzed by the end of it

I wish all my students were that easy. I won't let them wear a full face helmet starting out though. Can make it difficult to see your emergency handles.

Quick question, done a tandem skydive for the first time and absolutely loved it. I Was extremely calm in the situation due to no fear of heights and I was able to think very clearly. So I thought, why not do AFF? The only issue was, during my tandem, the arch positioning slipped out my mind at around 8,000ft. (I jumped from 15,000). Would you say tunnel time really helps you get used to the air and is worth investing in before aff? Thanks
Do the AFF course! Your coaches will teach you proper body positioning

Well done! You absolutely nailed it! I have cruised through AFF thanks to my hour and half before my first AFF jump. It is so so helpful, I continue to go once a month and i hope to be sit flying that quick myself!

What gets me is that the dz I'm at there are only very few instructors that are willing to to take time to even talk to you and if you don't say 1 word right before you start ep you are treated like crap. And that your never good enough.

@carnellc yeah but it's about 4 hours away instead of an hour.
@carnellc oh yeah and there are some there that are very good and informative but they either are really busy doing other things w tandems or learning to fly the planes. Since we only had at one pilot till now.

Great video. We just started our tunnel time and passed L1 in 2 sessions and are working up to back flying. Question for you is how long did AFF take and were all the jumps at the beginning of the vid the same day/sesh?
Stoked that you guys are getting tunnel time. As far as your question goes, I would plan at best, 3 jumps a day. You might be able to get more depending on how well you are doing and the availability of instructors/coaches. Also keep in mind that the first couple of jumps are mentally and physically tiring. For what the video is showing, all my jumps got done in 30 days. I could only jump on the weekends and we had several days of bad weather. I was also only trying to get 2 jumps a day in when I was at the DZ.

@@shoemakerleve9 sorry I’m just now seeing this. If you can get an hour (or more) you should be good. Just remember, the coaches at SDU are super good and unless you have that money to spend, you really don’t have to go to the tunnel but it always helps!
