Riding motorcycles - adventure, enduro and trials.
California BDR with the Ducati Desert X - Section 8
May 2023
Bishop to Benton (reversed), 36 miles
Section 8 is a short one. So short that we decided to take it in reverse on our way home day, coming back towards LA and San Diego. It's only 36 miles and it would be super fast, if not for an unexpected road closure due to the recent heavy rains. The Chidago Canyons were a pleasant and beautiful ride, and it was also nice to stop and check the ancient petroglyphs on the way to Bishop.
After section 8 was finished, therefore concluding our beautiful BDR trip, we stopped in Bishop for some BBQ and to finish the trip with the full spirit of adventure, we had our first and only flat tire from all sections.

The long ride

A fun day ride with two Ducati DesertX, a Triumph Tiger, a BMW GSA and a KTM 890R. We started with Otay Mountain Truck Trail, followed by the Border Run and finally we hit Superstition Mountain dunes on big bikes a few days after the big rains in San Diego. Translation: hero sand!

40 minutes pour accéder au filtre à air . Autant pour le remontage.ça explique en partie le coût des révisions. Ducati a pourtant bien du le constater lors de la conception de ce modèle....
i dont own this bike . I just wanted to watch for the pure absurdity of this air filter replacement. STUPID! Thanks for filming and posting.
Hi, do you still use it? Whats the long term review? You like it?
Can you make a tutorial on the hugerock x70?
It’s the deal breaker for me! Ducati, this realy shows your lack of understanding for the rides in this sector. We do oil, air an other bits our selves an don’t get u to do it in the middle of the desert an it doesn’t cost us a second mortgage. I’m goin for a T7w raid!
looks easy, do i need a strong arm and strength to control the bike
this is just stupid to have to remove this much stuff just for air filter .The dealer want almost $300 for a damn air filter change . Save yourself some money and buy the yamaha t7
Inferior engineering, no doubt. With that said, is there evidence of premature engine wear/failure as a result of dirty air filter? As everyone knows, there are other variables: how was the engine broken in, which engine oil (and associated additives) have been used, what is the frequency or engine oil change, have plugs been changed, have the valves been adjusted correctly and at specified intervals. Can this evidence be supported by oil analysis as opposed to anecdotal evidence?
What was the temp?
That is probably 1.5 hours at the shop to change the filter, and to forget to replace all the screws. I wear xl to xxl gloves. That Rally I’ve been mentioning to the Frau is going to have to wait.
How do you like the Hugerock?
Iv tooken myn offroad in gnarly places a few times now.. The biggest issue for me other the wheight 😅 is the steering stabilizer. It does poorly on rocks. I ordered a muller scotts dampner..just patiently waiting
I know im late to the party but did you end up doing section 2/3 twice to get back to 4? Im assuming after the 3rd video once y'all got to primm you headed home?
could you just tell me how you connected those 4 pins that are together with the power supply, and what are they for? I can't find anything online pls 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😰
To connect the power supply, only two thick wires are required: red for DC+ and black for DC−. The other four pins are designed to meet specific custom requirements of customers, facilitating connection for peripheral device expansion. These include gray for GND, yellow for VCC_5V, green for RS232_TX, and white for RS232_RX. If serial data transmission is not needed, it is recommended not to use these connections. We suggest insulating them with adhesive to prevent short circuits.
@@HugerockGlobalthx you
Hi did you had some problems connecting 12v cable charging? I ve mount xt70 on KTM 1290 and I must use a tension regulator to avoid switch off when I start the bike
Hello ,I would like to ride with you guys some time .My group doesn't like this area that much but i do . I have a 500 ktm dual sport and have been riding off and on for many years.
A company no one has heard of. A mere 30 day warranty. And a $500 price tag makes this a hard choice at this time. I DO want to believe but if a new company doesn't have enough confidence in their own product to offer a decent warranty it's hard to feel good about laying down the cash. Just because they can wire a circuit board doesn't mean it's going to keep up with android and google changes over time. These issues are not a given and there is no indication they will continue to update the firmware as the world changes. There are videos posted by drone pilots that are experiencing serious issues with this unit. My guess is that there is a reason why Pdu has not posted an update on this unit. I expect he has had serious issues.
Their website states a one-year warranty, with a 30-day return policy.
Africa twin is a nightmare changing the two air filters you have to remove crash bars aswell how many times really do you change your air filter per year once twice max
What app are you using?
Hi Padu, Hi Padu, I finally got my DX Rally. Super stoked so far just working on getting it all upfitted. If you wouldn't mind, which mount are you using to attatch your Garmin to the Ducati Utility Bar? I have seen the Rally Raid option but like how tidy the one you have looks. Thanks.
A more detailed visual description of the actual drilling holes/used spaces would have been nice. On the Mosko fitment page they talk about the necessity of 3 additional holes to be drilled per side. You mentioned only one extra hole necessary. Where exactly did you drill and how/where did you fit the other clamps? Thanks!
What about the timing belt for the other cylinder, does it also need cleaning?
Can the X70 make phone calls?
If you have a SIM card inserted, you can.
@@HugerockGlobal Thank you kindly sir.
Подивився. Передумав куплять. Дуже дякую.
Geez Padu! Pushing the limits.
It's more like the limits are pushing me!
Great video and very helpful as I am planning to ride that section soon. I have run dozens of searches the last few weeks for videos of Section 3 but thanks to the psychotic YT algorithm, this video didn't come up in any of them. Then yesterday it popped up in my feed. You sure crushed the sand on the big Ducati! How long did it take you to complete the section?
We did both sections 2 and 3 on the same day. I believe we left the "Oasis" around 3pm and finished the dirt roads just when darkness falls - about 4 hours in total. We arrived in Primm at night.
Haaaaaaa. Been there. Get up on that tank in a slow turn.
Yep, slowly learning that
I’m in Australia and just installed the rack today. Same issue with the bar across the number plate. Did you end up getting a resolution?
Breaking bad
Padu!!! Nice job, rail through that stuff buddy!!!!👍
Hello, are you not using the huge rock?
I didn't have it at that time. I was still using the Garmin Zumo XT. At some point during the trip, the wiring got severed from the vibration and I couldn't use any GPS anymore. My buddy was in charge of navigation though.
What tires did you use?
For this trip I was using the MotoZ RallZ
How is your New Navigation package working out for you, now that you have had a chance to use it. I trying to decide what package I will install on my DX
For local rides, perfect! Tomorrow I'll start a 5 day navigation rally and we will see how it will hold up
Look forward to your thoughts, thank you
Hi Paul How did the X70 perform over the 5 day trip?
@@RallyMotoADV beautifully. The Ducati gps bar not so much. The internal metal bracket failed. I was still able to finish the event, but it vibrated a lot. I bought heavier duty accessory bracket from nomad adv but haven’t installed yet
I cant wait to do this to mine as well. >AU$5k is the only obstacle for me :(
It is steep, but for me, the motivation was that my local suspension guy was quoting me about the same price just for a suspension rebuild on top of the OEM!
*promosm* 💦
I rode Oriflamme this past weekend on my Tenere 700. It was my first time ever off road, and boy what an experience that was lol! I did the route starting in Banner so coming down that last section, tired, was scary!
That is awesome! Oriflamme is no joke! Look for me on SD Adventure Riders. Maybe we can put a ride together.
Awesome video ! I May have ridden with you guys this past weekend ? I was on a Yamaha, my buddy on a husky. Met Massimo and a few others. Great riding
Yeah, that's our crew! We are usually every saturday morning there!
@@merloti that’s awesome. Hope to run into you guys soon - you guys have a solid crew
Hi, thanks to sharing this video. Would be possible to share with me the service manual, which is on you screen in video please? Thanks a lot, Lukas
What's your email?
Hi! How was the jump? Did the DDX bottom out?
Yes, with my weight (185lbs no gear) it's easy to bottom out. At the very least I needed new springs. I'm finishing installing the TracTive within the next few days. I'll report on how different it is.
Please let me know how the TracTive works out. I’m on the fence about whether to go with TracTive or Ohlins. The dealer is pushing towards Ohlins and Andreani cartridges. Hope you are feeling better!
How did you like the class? I’m taking the enduro class next month on my 500 and maybe the adventure class once my DDX Rally is delivered.
I really like it. It gave me a lot of tools that quickly went into practice when I'm riding.
Good initiative Padu but you took 4 times more than standard procedure THAT TAKES LESS THAN 20 MIN. YOU ARE REMOVING A LOT O PARTS THAT ARE NOT NECESSARY.
Yes, I'm aware. That was the first time I did it.
Hey Padu, what were the bolts which you used for attaching the mosko panel to sw motech rack?
Not very nice. I just ran to Home Depot and bought a bunch of options, then tried whatever worked. I'm not so proud of them because they stick out on inside, but since it doesn't interfere with anything and it's not very visible, I was ok with it.
Hope your pal heals quickly.
Thank you!
All the different brands of bikes, I love it
We truly live in a privileged time. There is a bike for whatever taste and need.
Bellissimo video!! saluti dall'italia
Ciao Adriano! Grazie mille! Auguri!
Enjoy your videos. How do you like your Shift Tech Exhaust? Sounds good but do you find the sound level acceptable? Have you run with/without the DB Killer? It is tough to find information on this brand. Thanks
I really like the Shift Tech, but I've had to replace it and I'm on HPCorse now. Yes, I've run all of them without DBKiller and I've remapped with the help of Shift Tech. The sound level is loud, but not obnoxious. I've asked many of my riding friends that same question and they all loved the sound of Shift Tech without dbkiller, and they don't think it's too much. HPCorse sounds very similar, but nobody heard it yet, so it's just my opinion so far.
@@merloti Thanks Padu. Is there a sparticular reason you had to change it and decided on HP Corse?
@@craigjohnson9631 yeah, I was using a more circular profile version of the Shift Tech. One of the internal rivets was rubbing on the swing arm when jumping (and bottoming the suspension). The logo sticker was also yellowing from temperature, so I decided to try something new. The HPCorse is more slim (taller but narrower).
@@merloti Thanks for the info Padu. Are you still using the OEM crash bars and if so are you satisfied with their performance?
@@craigjohnson9631 I am now. When I bought the bike in 22 it took forever to arrive, then I bought some Heeds temporarily. Both do the job, but I like the OEM quality and finish better.
What exhaust are you running? I couldn't catch the brand of your new seat. Looks good, you'll have to keep it clean.
It's the HPCorse. I like the narrow profile - when I jump (and bottom the suspension), it doesn't crash into the swing arm. The seat is Thrill Seekers. They have a really cool online tool for customizing the colors. I've installed myself. Bought a $30 pneumatic staple gun from Amazon and followed their video. I think a professional would do a better job, but I'm happy with the results. The good news is that I can adjust as the time goes by. I know, it's white. I have another dirt bike that is also white. It gets dirty, but it only adds charm and character to the bike (or at least is what the lazy me wants to believe) :)
Love the color choices for the new seat cover!
Thanks! It looks good when the mosko reckless is in place
sweet!
Thanks!
Southern California BDR is garbage. Too much desert riding. No shades not even fun. Northern California is way better. All day long all you do is ride over sand.
Humnnn, have you done the SoCal BDR before?
